Best Bang-For-Baht Breakfast

Foodland Supermarket

Foodland is a superb value for money supermarket chain. There are branches in both Bangkok and Pattaya that are open 24 hours. They stock a wide range of products at reasonable prices, and they even have a pharmacy section.

Inside each Foodland Supermarket there is a Took Lae Dee Restaurant. The literal translation of Took Lae Dee is “cheap and good” which is a very accurate description. You know the food is both cheap and good, when you see so many locals eating at these Thai style diners.

I still can’t believe that Bangkok is such a huge city and yet, there is a definite lack of 24 hour restaurants. Thankfully, we’ve got Took Lae Dee!

The American Breakfast must be the best bang-for-baht you can possibly get anywhere in Thailand. It costs just 79 baht for 2 Eggs, Ham or Sausage, Toast, Butter, Preserves, Orange or Pineapple Juice, plus Tea or Coffee. If you hit it at Happy Hour (05:30-09:00) the American Breakfast is only 62 baht.

In Bangkok, I prefer the Took Lae Dee branches on Sukhumvit Soi 16 and in Patpong Soi 2, because both restaurants have tables to sit comfortably. However, the Took Lae Dee Restaurant on Sukhumvit soi 5 gets very crowded and there are no tables. Also, service can be very slow compared to the other branches, so patience is definitely needed sometimes.

As an added bonus, drinking water is free with refills as well. This will be like paradise to the Cheap Charlie Clan!

The menu has a selection of Thai, Asian and Western dishes, including the tasty Chinese Roast Pork. The Chicken Fried Rice is delicious and as cheap as chips. Took Lae Dee really takes some beating and being open 24 hours, this gives Foodland a great advantage over competitors.

Daves Raves – If you don’t like waiting, walk inside the supermarket and do your shopping. By the time you get back your food will be ready. You can eat in, or take it home along with your shopping. Hey, that’s two jobs done in one!

Doing The Street Eat Beat!

Friday, September 8th, 2017

Do I have a food fetish? I am in a bit of a funny mood today. Is there something kind of kinky about street food in Thailand?

Now I know that is a strange question, but let me explain. A few moons ago, down on Sukhumvit Road, there is a gorgeous girl who makes delicious Fried Pork. But, sadly some guy has porked the pork girl and that’s the end of that fantasy!

The street food scene in Thailand is certainly something you would not see in the Western world. Back in Farangland, “Greasy Joe’s Fat Burger” is not what I call street food at all.

I love the simplicity of Thai street food; it’s quick, cheap and tasty. We must remember that grilling meat is so much healthier than deep frying it to death!

Whenever you have the munchies, you can grab a few of those Barbecue Chicken Sticks at the silly cost of 10 baht each. Just wait a few minutes and you are good to go with your healthy fast food. It’s ideal when you are on the move. You can eat them right there on the street, while you travel, or save them to eat in your room. The Thais do it all the time. You know, when in Rome and all that jazz!

As for the operators themselves, Thai street stalls are practical, cost-effective and in some cases, it’s a very profitable little business. Once they acquire a street space, for relatively little cost “Bee’s Barbecue” can be up and running in no time.

I admire how innovative the Thais can be. An old oil barrel is sliced in half and made into a barbecue stand. Have you seen those big clay pots? They are filled with charcoal and a steel grill is placed over the top. It’s a simple idea and yet so practical. The street food carts bearing anything from Som Tam (Spicy Papaya Salad) to fresh fruit bring a new meaning to “meals-on-wheels.”

Your grub is cooked in no time and it’s very delicious. So many Thais prefer street food to fancy restaurants. They tell me it just does not taste the same.

Daves Raves – At times I think the Western world could learn a lot from practical, cost-effective concepts we see in Thailand. Sometimes less is more and simplicity is the key to success and satisfaction.

Khaosan Road Clear The Sidewalks

Tuesday, September 5th, 2017

TRENDY TOURIST AREA KHAOSAN ROAD BANGKOK

Street vendors operating in Khao San Road have been instructed to clear the sidewalks down this popular and trendy tourist area.

This is following a recent meeting with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA). The street vendors were told to move their stalls from the sidewalk onto the road for a period of one week. The trial commences on September 12th.

The concept is proposed to satisfy everybody and BMA District Chef Wutichai Bunyasit said, “We want to return all footpaths to the people.”

Daves Raves – I think this is a sensible solution, so let’s hope it happens.

Kiwi Pub Curry & Pint Night

When I lived in England, I have had my fair share of curry nights I call tell you. In fact, Indian Curry is now Britain’s most popular food. It beats Fish & Chips, Roast Dinners and Chinese Takeaway hands down.

I remember an Indian chef explaining to me the art of making a great curry. He said with a wry smile, “Never hurry a curry!” Well that just cracked me up!

The Kiwi Sports Bar & Grill hosts “Monday Curry Night” with a choice of Chicken, or Beef Jalfrezi, Rogan Josh, or Tikka Masala. It comes with Steamed Rice, Garlic Pita Bread, and a choice of a Heineken Pint, or a Tiger Pint. You get all that for just 279฿

Mayweather VS McGregor (WBC Title)

Friday, August 25th, 2017

The burning question this weekend is who will win the WBC Super Welterweight Title Fight? Will it be Super Slick Floyd Mayweather, or Mad Irishman Conor McGregor?

Dubbed ‘The Money Fight’ these two fighters are set for an enormous pay day on Sunday, August 27th. In fact, it’s such HUGE money that it’s extremely obscene!

For the multitudes of fight fans around the world, we want to see an action-packed World Title Fight, this is what matters to us.

CHEQUERS PUB SPECIAL BOXING BREAKFAST

So, where do you watch Mayweather vs McGregor in Bangkok? Well, I suggest Stumble Inn Bar (Sukhumvit Soi 4), Chequers Pub (Sukhumvit Soi 4), The Kiwi Pub (Sukhumvit Soi 8), The Australian (Sukhumvit Soi 11), or last but by no means least The Game (Sukhumvit Soi 9). There’s five good choices, so pick what you prefer. All of these Bangkok bars, are great theme pubs in their own right.

STUMBLE INN BAR – DOORS OPEN 09:00 FOR HAPPY HOUR & FOOD IS AVAILABLE

They state when their pub doors open, but the Mayweather vs McGregor fight will not start before 10:00 AM. It’s expected to start between 10:00-11:00 AM. Don’t get up at the crack of dawn, unless you are determined to get the best ringside seat!

I am looking forward to the Big Fight and I think this will be an exciting encounter of two great fighters. Will Mayweather box too clever, or will McGregor knock him out?

Amazing Thailand Street Food Vendors

Thursday, August 24th, 2017

Street Eat Beat!

It is important what you believe these days, especially with the increasing amount of inaccurate reports and fake news in the various forms of media. It is so often the biggest media companies who are  the worst offenders.

Fairly recently it was reported that all Bangkok street food vendors were to be removed, but this did not happen. Sukhumvit Road street vendors remain out in force and I was out taking some photos this week to show you.

The string of street food vendor photos below are from Soi Nana…

Baht Buster British Breakfast

Thursday, August 24th, 2017

Brief History Of Thailand’s Farang Food

When I first came to Thailand way back in the 1980’s (yes I feel old!), the farang food menu in Pattaya bars, comprised of very little. Some bars served no more than a Ham And Cheese Toastie, which ideally is only a snack. After eating too much native food, my poor stomach got all Thai-ed up. Well, at least the Toasted Sandwich Maker was invented to satisfy some of our needs.

Okay, you could get an American Breakfast in some places, but it was not a real cooked breakfast, especially like us Brits are so accustomed to eating. It was a jazzed up Continental Breakfast at best.

These were served with cheap cooked ham, rubbery hot dogs, sweet scrambled eggs (due too much cream), jam with barely toasted bread and tea that was like nats piss! Some Thai chefs thought it cool to add some Thai food. This sort of made it a Thainglish Breakfast. A few of these added ingredients would be sacrilege to a proper chef. The Michelin Star Award-Winning Master Chef Gordon Ramsey, would blow his top if he saw what they served in those days.

THE GAME SPORTS BAR (SUKHUMVIT SOI 9 BANGKOK) ENGLISH BREAKFAST

These so called ‘brekkies’ can only be explained as a Thai version of a ‘cooked’ breakfast. It was cheap and cheerful. You ate it, because there were very few choices of Western food in those days. Incidentally, there were suspicious cans of Guinness available that were brewed in Thailand. Naive Americans were the only guys drinking it. Meanwhile, us Brits were giggling, as it tasted like drain cleaner.

Oh boy, how all of this has changed nowadays. With the emergence of theme pubs and a lot of them being British pubs, comes a quantity of quality. Both Bangkok and Pattaya boast some excellent establishments. So much so, you are almost spoiled for choice down Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok.

Due to rising competition over the years, the good pubs try hard to provide the best meals. The food is cooked by qualified chefs who use quality, authentic ingredients. The tide has turned and it’s very much for the better.

This leads me to mention the Baht Buster British Breakfast served daily (09:00-01:00) at Stumble In Bar located on Soi Nana. It’s great bang-for-baht at just 199฿ net and it is made with quality ingredients.

Don’t Worry We’ve Got You Covered

Nana Plaza Beer Garden

As fate has it, just as you approach the neon jungle it hammers down with rain. Well, you don’t have to worry, because the Nana Beer Garden has a large retractable roof. Never fear Nana Beer Garden is here!

Talking of large roofs, you will be completely protected from the rain at the newly opened Rajah Complex. Located further down Soi Nana, the Rajah Complex has a HUGE rooftop. It’s similar to those enormous Petrol Station roofs. While you sit at Hillary 1 Bar getting wet on the inside, you will be dry on the outside.

NANA BEER GARDEN (NANA PLAZA BANGKOK 2017)

Another One Bites The Dust

I was not at all surprised to see that Night Witch Bangkok Bar has been completely dismantled inside. Let’s face it there was more atmosphere on the moon. It never took off and I heard from Stickboy that Khun Meow has taken it over. It is thought to become a pool bar. Good news for Soi Nana fans, because Hillary Group are good operators. I wish them good luck.

Still at Rajah Complex (for want of a better name), the Hillary Group recently launched Angels 4 Bar. It is located at the entrance, directly opposite the old Jools Bar. It’s a cosy bar with angels sitting pretty with their halos.

Cover Your What?

Saturday, May 13th, 2017

Well it’s been one hell of a week!  Which culminated with my entire website going on the Fritz on Friday night. Some frantic calls to the hosting provider and a few other people, and we managed to get the old girl back up again.

In this day an age, websites need updating technically, as well as regular content being posted. I am not a technical guy I just know the basics. But, me and the old girl have been through so much together since 2006 and I would be mortified if anything happened to my ole bird! 🙂

THE ALL NEW HILLARY 1 BAR (RAJAH COMPLEX SOI NANA)

Anyway, I remember years ago in England, when I was a nightclub doorman, this massive Bentley rolled up one day. My mate nudged me and said, ‘Here that’s Sheikh Yamani,’  and I replied a bit too loud, ‘Shake your what?’

Well it happened it again the other day when Joe was telling me about the new event he has planned for the end of May at the Black Pagoda, which is called ‘Cover Your Stones’  and I blurted out, ‘Cover your what?’

The event Joe was telling me about should be good  because it’s two of Bangkok’s most famous cover bands;  the Bangkok Beatles and Sticky Fingers, going head-to-head at the Black Pagoda.

I am looking forward to this, as I have seen the Sticky Fingers at Clubhouse Sports Bar and I have to say they are very good. I love The Rolling Stones songs and this promises to be a great night.  The video of the last live music event they did at the Black Pagoda looks like it went very well.

For anyone interested in this event it’s on Saturday 27th March from 9:00 PM at the Black Pagoda, Patpong 2 – tickets can be purchased on the day, or in advance on Oneplace. You can also join the Facebook event

There were a couple of big events over the past week, one was the 4 Year Anniversary at Insanity Nightclub.  That was on Thursday and I had every intention of going, but I got totally waylaid at the other event, which was the opening of the new Hillary 1 at Rajah Complex on Soi Nana.

Although I was not there my good mate Toby was about and he said it was a great night at Insanity Nightclub. But, I doubt if he can remember all of it. Toby did  manage to capture this video footage, which looks like he had slightly more interesting evening than me at Hillary’s. However, I have to say I was very impressed with the new venue and the refurbishment job is superb. Mind you, I thoroughly enjoyed the eye candy of several red hot promo dolly birds. There were some interesting guests, including some of the bar owners from Nana Plaza.

More news and tittle tattle soon. Cheers!

Spanky’s GoGo Bar Party

Thursday, February 9th, 2017

The popular fun ‘n’ frolics gogo bar Spanky’s celebrates a remarkable 8 Year Anniversary, tomorrow night in the neon jungle of Nana Plaza. Believe me, this is a great achievement for any gogo bar in Thailand, especially nowadays.

On Friday, February 10th, there will be not one, but two BBQ Roasted Pigs and a ton of fun awaits you. Doors open at 18:00 and there is a possibility that Nana Plaza will have to close at midnight, due to the Buddhist Holiday on February 11th.

Spanky’s GoGo Bar is located on the Middle Floor next to Angelwitch GoGo Bar.

FULL MOON THIS WEEK

Thursday, August 18th, 2016

It’s a full moon  today, so it’s supposed to  be a good time to party, have sex, visit a psychiatric ward, or turn into a Werewolf depending on which urban legend you believe in.  Of course, there is no scientific evidence to show the full moon has any effect on our behaviour, but we know the moon does affect the tides and with our bodies being 75% water I suppose it’s possible?

That’s funny, because I can definitely feel gravity pulling me towards a pint tonight!

If you believe that your sex life is energised by a full moon you might want to take your chances at the full moon party at Bangkok Beat tonight (Thursday). The party includes a very tempting 99 baht Sang Som Whisky, (something for the ladies – thoughtful) and prizes for those who turn up in the best fancy dress. Somehow don’t think I’ll be winning that one!

I have always liked the live music at Bangkok Beat and it might worth checking out… cheaper than going to Koh Phangan 🙂

TEN REASONS TO PARTY IN PATPONG 2

Tuesday, June 30th, 2015

For many years Patpong has suffered from the bad reputation of the ripoff bars and to some degree the stigma still remains. However, Patpong nowadays offers so much more than gymnastic tricks performed with a bar girl’s private parts! To a large degree the ‘magic pussy shows’ have been outlawed.

Those in the know head to Patpong Soi 2, where you will find plenty of good places to visit. The list includes Pink Panther, Cosmos Bar, Black Pagoda, Club Electric Blue, The Strip, Bada Bing, BarBar Fetish ClubG’s German-Thai Restaurant and Embassy Of Beers, Le Bouchon French Restaurant, and an excellent 24 hour Foodland Supermarket and Restaurant.

Recently, Stickboy wrote a blog post about where to go and what to do in Patpong. Here is Stickboy’s informative article –  Ten Reasons To Party In Patpong Tonight

The Strip are gearing up for a Beer Bucket Parade on July 1st until July 4th.

PATPONG GOGO BARS OPEN ON JUNE 1

Sunday, May 31st, 2015

Tomorrow June 1st is Visakha Bucha Day, which is one of the most revered Buddhist holidays on the Thai calendar. Most of the beer bars and gogo bars will be closed.

It is most likely that all the bars in Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy will be closed on Monday. Pubs have been told they can open, but with a strict NO ALCOHOL policy.

If any pubs decide to serve alcohol, they do so at their own risk. Be aware that this will probably apply to gogo bars in Pattaya as well.

There is good news, as Patpong will be open and most likely serving alcohol from paper cups. But, I am reliably informed that booze ‘n’ babes will be on offer Monday night in Patpong for those who want to party.
