Stickman Bids Us Farewell

Sunday, August 20th, 2017

The big Bangkok nightlife news of the week is that Stickman has decided to bow out from penning his weekly column. Thailand’s most famous nightlife columnist has decided to start a new chapter in his life. The news has come as a shock to many people, but while close friends are obviously saddened by the news, they are not really surprised. It’s sad to see my old mate and supporter, Stickman, hang up his journalistic boots. We have been good friends for many years.

The Stickman Weekly column rose in popularity very quickly and became an institution for a multitude of followers across the globe. This most popular online column of its genre started back in April 2001. Coincidentally, we both moved to live in Bangkok that same year, which was almost 20 years ago. Ironically, we both met at Hollywood Carousel Bar on the top floor of Nana Plaza, when I was the manager.

While it is true that some people did not like the way he reported certain aspects of the goings-on in Bangkok, they kept on reading Stickman Weekly. I would say to them, ‘If you dislike Stickman so much, why do you read his column?’ I think I made a fair point, don’t you?

I know some bar and nightclub owners had issues with what he wrote from time to time. But, let’s be honest, so many of us religiously read his weekly column for years and years. Even the Stickman detractors wouldn’t miss it, and that’s because he writes very well and often came up with great articles.

It struck some guys that Stick appeared to be like a fish out of water amid the naughty nightlife scene. I can tell you, Stick is a very health-conscious guy, who never smoked, never took drugs, rarely stayed out late, and rarely ever got drunk. In terms of being a good boy, he is a model farang, if there ever was one. But, Stick is such a talented, articulate writer, and has such a smooth flow of words that he captivates his audience. As Toby said, ‘Many are called to such a path, but few are chosen.’ Just like an addiction, Stick’s cult followers kept coming back for more.

Stick was a professional schoolteacher and as the saying goes, ‘They teach because they cannot do.’ However, in this case, Stick did do it very well. Perhaps like me, you would like to read his story. Hey Stick, when are you going to write your book?!

Despite his online fame, he has always been polite and showed patience with people. This is particularly true when an extremely excited Dave the Rave would almost talk him to sleep. It was like trying to go the wrong way up a busy one-way street! Joking aside, Stickman always supported and encouraged me throughout my Bangkok nightlife career and also in my efforts to become a photographer and blogger.

Not only could Stickman Bangkok engage his readers, grabbing us with a firm hand, but Sticks always gave the right advice and guidance for anybody visiting Thailand. I remember guys telling me they used his website as a guide book and threw their copies of Lonely Planet into the rubbish bin.

MONSOON SEASON THAILAND 2017

Stick is also a very accomplished photographer. His photographs are exceptional, especially Stick’s special skill at capturing street scenes. I told Stick that his photos are so good he must include them in Stickman Weekly. I felt his photography was underused and underrated, even by Stick himself. This is how all the photos started to appear in his weekly column. I felt the photographs gave it a more interesting magazine look and, of course, we all love some eye candy.

For me, the Thailand online scene will be less interesting without Stickman. In my book, he bows out a legend. I wish you all the very best Stick!

Cover Your What?

Saturday, May 13th, 2017

Well it’s been one hell of a week!  Which culminated with my entire website going on the Fritz on Friday night. Some frantic calls to the hosting provider and a few other people, and we managed to get the old girl back up again.

In this day an age, websites need updating technically, as well as regular content being posted. I am not a technical guy I just know the basics. But, me and the old girl have been through so much together since 2006 and I would be mortified if anything happened to my ole bird! 🙂

THE ALL NEW HILLARY 1 BAR (RAJAH COMPLEX SOI NANA)

Anyway, I remember years ago in England, when I was a nightclub doorman, this massive Bentley rolled up one day. My mate nudged me and said, ‘Here that’s Sheikh Yamani,’  and I replied a bit too loud, ‘Shake your what?’

Well it happened it again the other day when Joe was telling me about the new event he has planned for the end of May at the Black Pagoda, which is called ‘Cover Your Stones’  and I blurted out, ‘Cover your what?’

The event Joe was telling me about should be good  because it’s two of Bangkok’s most famous cover bands;  the Bangkok Beatles and Sticky Fingers, going head-to-head at the Black Pagoda.

I am looking forward to this, as I have seen the Sticky Fingers at Clubhouse Sports Bar and I have to say they are very good. I love The Rolling Stones songs and this promises to be a great night.  The video of the last live music event they did at the Black Pagoda looks like it went very well.

For anyone interested in this event it’s on Saturday 27th March from 9:00 PM at the Black Pagoda, Patpong 2 – tickets can be purchased on the day, or in advance on Oneplace. You can also join the Facebook event

There were a couple of big events over the past week, one was the 4 Year Anniversary at Insanity Nightclub.  That was on Thursday and I had every intention of going, but I got totally waylaid at the other event, which was the opening of the new Hillary 1 at Rajah Complex on Soi Nana.

Although I was not there my good mate Toby was about and he said it was a great night at Insanity Nightclub. But, I doubt if he can remember all of it. Toby did  manage to capture this video footage, which looks like he had slightly more interesting evening than me at Hillary’s. However, I have to say I was very impressed with the new venue and the refurbishment job is superb. Mind you, I thoroughly enjoyed the eye candy of several red hot promo dolly birds. There were some interesting guests, including some of the bar owners from Nana Plaza.

More news and tittle tattle soon. Cheers!

Do You Need A Night Nurse?

Like many others, I have been a regular visitor to Spanky’s GoGo Bar for several years now. You may know that I ran Angelwitch Rock Dancers next door for 10 years. I watched Spanky’s develop into one of Thailand’s most popular gogo bars that is has become today. It is simply an iconic gogo bar.

In the early years the shows were very slapstick and corny, but nowadays there is more sophistication in the stage shows. However, the fun ‘n’ frolics still remains, as a major aspect of the appeal. It is an escape from the real world.

Spanky’s GoGo Bar is located on the Middle Level of Nana Plaza.

bangkok beat live music and hot girls

Bangkok Beat, long time favorite of many, as one of the top live music venues in Bangkok, seems to be making a comeback.

The bar (located on Sukhumvit soi 7/1 just off the BTS nana and a few yards past the subway sandwich shop), has two live Filipino bands on every night.  I do like a good live band as I have always said it adds atmosphere to a venue.  The current crew are tight and bash out all the classics. Bangkok Beat has always been popular with locals, tourists and long term visitors in the Sukhumvit area.

Of course the Bangkok Beat  has always been famous as a place to pick up freelance girls in Bangkok and I did notice the venue seemed to lose is popularity for a while but that now seems to have returned.  The other night I went and was surprised to see how busy it was.  There is a new Western manager and that always seems to help, but I  did also notice the pool table area was busy.

I have to admit after a few beers around midnight the place was rocking, with a good vibe.

The Bangkok Beat also seems to run some pretty good drink promotions with Jack Daniels on at just 99 baht all night every Thursday.  To get that kind of price and still enjoy  a good live band with some hot freelancers to boot, seems a good deal.

Some mates have mentioned to me that the door security were asking for ID on entry when they went. I believe this is because Bangkok Beat is classed as a nightclub and they are therefore required to check IDs .  I always tell everyone it’s  a good idea to carry a drivers licence, or a copy of your passport, when out and about at night, especially with ‘daft and barmy’ around.

You don’t want to get held up, as some people have done recently, at clubs if the boys in green suddenly show up. Better to be safe and carry some form of ID with you. It might just get you out of a tight spot.

Bangkok Beat is a good place to check out, try the Jack Daniels Thirsty Thursdays 🙂

The Rules About Taking Photos & Videos In Go-Go Bars

It is a firmly established rule that NO PHOTOS, or videos are permitted in the vast majority of go-go bars in Thailand.  This especially applies to the go-go girls upon the stage.  I never cease to be amazed that people don’t understand the strict NO PHOTO rule. (more…)
