Daves Raves - Buddha Day Update

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

*BUDDHA DAY UPDATE - FRIDAY, JULY 18th*

PATTAYA - The bars in Pattaya will be closed on Thursday, July 17th. However, the good news is that the Pattaya bars will be open on Friday, July 18th. This year everybody I speak to is in a state of confusion. It’s Friday night in and so far few go-go bars are likely to open. Last night some locally connected go-go bars in Soi Diamond were open. We presume those same go-go bars will be open again tonight. Head down to Super Girls, Super Baby and possibly Diamond Go-Go Bar in Soi Diamond. No doubt a few beer bars will be discretely serving alcohol, but most go-go bars are likely to be closed tonight.

BANGKOK - Most of the bars in the Sukhumvit area of Bangkok will be closed on July 17th and July 18th. Nana Plaza and bars around that area are definitely closed both Thursday and Friday. However, from the information I have received Patpong should be open this Friday night. Talk about an open and shut case!

FRIDAY NIGHT - A few pubs in Bangkok and Pattaya are open tonight. I know for a fact that Bully’s Pub are serving right now as normal. Cheers!

Daves Raves - Thai Cultural Festival

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Recently a Thai Cultural Festival was held in London. It proved to be very popular, because of the popularity of Thai food in Britain.  It comes as no surprise that there are around 1,700 Thai restaurants in Great Britain.  The festival featured a vast array of Thai culture and food.  The festival was so well received that Trafalgar Square was transformed into “Thaifalgar Square.”  The full story is covered by Thailand’s independent newspaper THE NATION

Daves Raves - Spain Win Euro 2008

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Spain have defeated Germany 1-0 in the Euro 2008 Cup Final.  Liverpool’s superstar striker Fernando Torres, scored the goal that yet again breaks the hearts of the Germans.  The vast majority feel that Spain are deserved winners.  Actually, I predicted Spain to do very well at the beginning of the tournament, and they did.  There has been some excellent attacking football throughout the Euro 2008 Tournament.  Furthermore, it has been an unpredictable and exciting football tournament.  Congratulations to Spain.

BANGKOK - BREAKING NEWS

In a shocking series of events, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s lawyers are sent to prison for six months.  An attempted bribe of 2,000,000 Baht, which was sent as a “gift” to the Supreme Court backfired on them.

This will probably damage Thaksin’s image even further…

Thailand In Turmoil

PROTESTERS MARCH ON GOVERNMENT HOUSE IN BANGKOK

Here we go again!  Thai protesters this afternoon have made a determined effort to march to Government House in Bangkok.  Although the Metropolitan Riot Police had (supposedly) set up a blockade, protesters easily outwitted the Thai authorities.

Meanwhile, the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) continues to fall amid fears of violence and speculation about another military coup.  Even though various Thai authorities state that there will not be another military coup, the political arena remains tense.  The crowds of protesters are mostly middle-class Bangkok residents, who are lead by the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD).

Due to the continuation of the anti-government protests and rumours of another military coup, the Thai stock market has fallen.  For the fifth consecutive trading day, Thai stocks have continued to fall.  Combined with food shortage fears and the rising costs of gas, the Thai people are becoming unsettled.  Clearly, there is unrest among certain anti-government factions in Bangkok.  Protesters remain defiant to demand that the Thai Prime Minister resigns.  The full story has been covered today by BBC NEWS

BIG MANGO BAR SOFT OPENING PARTY

BIG MANGO BAR - SOI NANA - BANGKOK

The Big Mango Bar have just announced that there will be a Soft Opening Party this Tuesday, June 3rd.  The reopening of the Big Mango was scheduled for Sunday, June 1st, but not surprisingly the Thai builders overran the proposed date.  The new Big Mango is located in the tiny alleyway between Jools Bar and The Tavern on Soi Nana.  Jools Bar is opposite the 7 ELEVEN near the Rajah Hotel car park.

NEW START FOR TRICKY RICKY AT BABY DOLLS

EVE - X ZONE GO-GO BAR - PATTAYAPattaya can be an unpredictable place at the best of times, but the hiring and firing of bar managers can happen at a whim.  Some Pattaya guys refer to one particular bar boss as Rambling Ricky!  Shortly after the partners of Sisterz Go-Go Bar decided to release Rambling Ricky, he was on the move again to secure another go-go bar.  Following a period of negotiations, he has now become the manager of Baby Dolls Go-Go Bar.  For those who are unsure, Baby Dolls is located in the increasingly popular Soi 15.  Ricky commented that although Baby Dolls has now changed ownership, it will continue to operate with the current format.  Rambling Ricky’s following now know where they can find him.  I know one thing for sure Tricky Ricky’s show concepts are hot stuff.  I hope Ricky settles in at Baby Dolls, and that things work out well for him.  Let’s face it, we are all getting dizzy trying to follow Rambling Roaming Ricky!  If you are in the neighbourhood, please visit Baby Dolls and pass on my regards to Ricky.  Cheers!

Daves Raves - My First Thailand Trip

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

BUDDHIST TEMPLES - BANGKOK - THAILANDPREFACE - This month marks the anniversary of my very first trip to Thailand.  Because I flew to Bangkok exactly 20 years ago, I thought it would be a good opportunity to include this article about my initial thoughts and observations.  Shortly after my virgin voyage to the Land Of Smiles, I wrote a piece about that extraordinary experience.  The scene is set, as we travel back in time to a scorching hot season two decades ago…

BANGKOK - ONE CITY, ONE MILLION CONFUSIONS

My first impression of Bangkok was one of absolute bewilderment.  Taking in this city of contrasts was proving to be very challenging.  My initial reaction was to feel numbed from head to foot from culture shock.  Bangkok – one city, one million confusions.  My senses were paralyzed from the very first moment I met Bangkok face to face; the tremendous noise, dreadful air pollution, appalling traffic, horrendous heat and total chaos.  Bangkok was certainly living up to its reputation of having the world’s worst traffic congestion and lowest oxygen count.  If Bangkok was anything to go by, Thailand and I had certainly not fallen in love at first sight.

BANGKOK - THAILANDI began to wonder which one of Bangkok’s lethal attributes would kill me first – the deadly drivers, the kamikaze motorcyclists, the polluted air, the lack of oxygen… or would I just simply perish from the unrelenting heat?  The Thais call their capital Krungthep, which means “City Of Angels.”  I can assure you, I could not find anything remotely angelic about this catastrophic city on my first introduction.

WHAT ON EARTH HAVE I DONE?

I was full of great expectations moments earlier on theTUK-TUK TAXI - BANGKOK - THAILAND plane, anticipating the pleasures of being seduced by Siam, but I landed with a resounding bump, and was only bemused by Bangkok.  I stepped out of the luxurious air-conditioned Don Muang airport, and was tenaciously greeted by the savage furnace-like heat of Bangkok.  I gasped for air as the stifling atmosphere pinned itself to the back of my throat.  My initial thoughts turned to those of shock and I thought, am I totally insane for coming here?  Yes, I reflected.  What on earth have I done?  Never before had I suffered the full affects of culture shock, but Bangkok was initiating me to it with the subtlety of a heavy whack on the head.

IT AIN’T HALF HOT MUM!

My friend, who came to meet me at Don Muang International Airport, read the expression on my face and uttered in a quiet voice, “It’s a really scorching hot season, even the Thais are complaining about the heat this year.”  In a state of confusion I thought, how could anybody stand this heat?

MBK SHOPPING CENTRE - BANGKOK - THAILANDWe loaded my luggage in the boot and got into my friend’s car.  I sighed with relief, while I had shelter away from the searing heat.  I was still numb as we began to crawl along the roads, clawing for every few inches we could seize.  It seemed to me that whilst on Bangkok roads, you are either riding on the wings of death or trapped like insects in a jam jar – there is no happy medium.  Waves of cool air soothed my weary body; I momentarily closed my eyes as the air-conditioner hummed its tune.

ROAD TO HELL

It is estimated that anywhere from 6-8 million people reside in Bangkok alone, and several million vehicles cram the main roads into gridlock.  I was pondering the fact that it is not surprising Bangkok’s roads have such a notorious reputation.  Whilst I continued to struggle to come to terms with Bangkok’s roads, an entire family of four passed by us.  They were all crammed onto one tiny motorbike.  Was I delirious?

BARBECUE SEAFOOD - SOI NANA - BANGKOK - THAILANDThis massive, sprawling metropolis was not my idea of a tropical paradise.  At best, it was Central London at the worst peak of rush hour multiplied several fold.  Even more disturbing – what about the road users?  My Lord!  I was looking on in horror as vehicles of all kinds played dodge ‘ems with each other.  Streams of traffic were travelling at high speed bumper-to-bumper, criss-crossing in and out of any lane they cared to choose.  Just then, a motorcyclist passed in front of the rows of traffic diagonally.  Unbelievably, some of the traffic was quite evidently not even going in the same direction.  Not only that, but the locals appeared so totally blasé about it all.

FLYING TO BANGKOK THAILANDSuddenly, we broke away from the traffic jam, because an open stretch of road appeared.  The speed of the other vehicles put my head into a permanent spin.  Young motorcyclists were weaving in and out of the paths of cars, buses and lorries, all with the daring of motorbike boy racers.  Furthermore, I was horrified to notice that nobody was wearing a crash helmet.  I was in a world of my own being entertained by this strange spectator sport.  I concluded that this was certainly not for the uninitiated.  I continued to be astonished by the way these daredevil motorbike riders negotiated intricate swerves and lane changes, all at death-defying high speeds.

THE GREAT ESCAPE

At long last we escaped the congested traffic and were on the way to Pattaya.  A new adventure was about to unfold…

SUMMARY - 20 YEARS LATER

Since my first encounter 20 years ago, the City Of Angels has certainly grown on me.  Finally, I decided to leave England 10 years ago and Bangkok has been my home ever since.

Bangkok was certainly different in 1988 compared to the modern city it is today. There was no BTS Skytrain, no MRT Subway, no modern traffic lights systems, and no crash helmets. Visually speaking it was a drab, grey, city. Today, even though this massive metropolis is even more heavily populated, I think it looks much better. The number of buildings and hotels that have been erected is simply staggering. Getting around the capital has become a lot easier.  This alone is a tremendous improvement.  If you are located close to a BTS Skytrain or MRT Subway station, you will reach your destination in no time.  Furthermore, these two modern modes of transportation are convenient, comfortable, inexpensive and safe.

Daves Raves - One Knight In Bangkok

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

STEPHEN HENDRY ROADSHOW THAILAND 2008Snooker legend Stephen Hendry has returned to Bangkok from two very busy, but enjoyable days in Koh Samui and Pattaya.  The pubs in Koh Samui and especially Pattaya, gave Stephen a deserved warm welcome.  In particular, the venues in Pattaya really made an effort to promote the Stephen Hendry Roadshow and it certainly paid off for them.  In the Queen Victoria Pub in Pattaya, two autographed polo shirts were auctioned off.  A total of  34,000 baht was raised for charity.  Ralf Winkler, the official photographer for the Stephen Hendry Roadshow commented, “Stephen has a lot of fans in Pattaya, he was very busy meeting them all.”  Roadshow organisers Rob Murray (Fluid Asia Pacific) and Bryan Sharp (Scottish and Newcastle Brewery) are very pleased how well the event has gone.  Rob said, “We have received very positive feedback about Stephen from all of the venues that he has attended.”

JOHN SMITH'S BITTER IN THAILANDAs the old saying goes, all good things must come to an end.  And so, we come to Stephen Hendry’s last evening in Thailand.  I don’t think I can emphasize this enough, but Stephen is one of the all-time greats, who ranks along side the world’s most accomplished sportsmen.  Stephen will make his final Roadshow appearance in Soi 8 Pub at 5:00pm and then in New Wave on Sukhumvit, Soi 7 at 6:30pm.  The Stephen Hendry Roadshow was proudly hosted by John Smith’s Bitter and Strongbow Draught Cider.

We hope that Stephen enjoyed his time in Thailand, as much as we have enjoyed meeting him.  Stephen is a true gentleman and I am sure that many people will eagerly await his return to Thailand.

As for Stephen’s female fans, they were pleased to see that there was at least “One Knight In Bangkok!”

Daves Raves - An Open And Shut Case

Monday, May 19th, 2008

sTRONGBOW CIDER IN THAILANDDue to today being a Buddhist Holiday some bars will be open and some will be closed.  It is something of an open and shut case!  Late last night I found out that most of the bars and nightspots in Bangkok and Pattaya will be closed tonight (Monday, May 19th).  Furthermore, as already predicted, the Thai authorities have ordered beer bars, go-go bars, discos and nightclubs to close out of “respect” for Visakha Bucha, which is one of the most revered Buddhist Holidays.

JOHN SMITH'S BITTER IN THAILANDHowever, there is some good news for those on a booze cruise.  For those of you in Bangkok who won’t be rushing off to a nearby temple, there are at least two pubs open in Bangkok tonight.  I am pleased to announce that the Stephen Hendry Roadshow will go ahead tonight as planned.  Former World Snooker Champion Stephen Hendry will make appearances in Robin Hood Pub (Sukhumvit, Soi 33/1) at 18:00 and then in Bully’s Pub (next to the JW Marriott Hotel) at 20:00.  I will be there to meet a living legend of the baize.  Tonight John Smith’s Bitter and Strongbow Draught Cider will be available at a special discount price in Robin Hood and Bully’s Pub.  Cheers!
