Thailand’s Mourning Period Ends

Sunday, October 29th, 2017

Bangkok Nightlife Resumes

the big mango 1 - Thailand's Mourning Period Ends

The official mourning period for His Majesty King Bhumibol Aduljadej ends tonight. In what has been a tremendously emotional ceremony, the scale of the Royal Funeral showed just how much the late King Rama 9 was loved.

The spectacular funeral procession and sheer volume of people attending was nothing short of phenomenal. Worldly foreign travelers were reported as saying, they have never seen anything like it in their lives. One long-term expat said, “There was an ocean of Thai people, as far as your eyes could see.”

It is hoped that November will see the start of the tourist season, with cool, dry weather and a steady spike in tourists arrivals. Following a very tough year for the entertainment industry, it is very much anticipated.

Bangkok Royal Funeral Reminder

Monday, October 23rd, 2017
Grand Palace Bangkok - Bangkok Royal Funeral Reminder

ROYAL GRAND PALACE BANGKOK THAILAND

THAILAND –  The Thai people have heavy hearts, as they prepare to say goodbye to their beloved King Rama 9. His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej is deemed by many people, as the King of all Kings.

It is with great sadness that we announce the Royal Funeral dates. Please note, the official days are as follows; October 25th, October 26th and October 27th, with October 26th being the day of the Royal Cremation.

His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej is regarded by many, as one of the world’s greatest ever King’s in history. His Majesty King Bhumibol had a good working relationship with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. It was reported that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth flew to Bangkok and personally signed the book of condolences.

Thailand and Britain still maintain a fairly close relationship, as they have for centuries. As historians will know, the Siamese Royal Princes were sent to study at England’s finest universities. How many countries have had that prestigious honour?

His Majesty King Bhumibil Adulyadej 1 - Bangkok Royal Funeral Reminder

Paying Respects! His Majesty King Bhumibol will be remembered for his tremendous kindness to the Thai people. May His Majesty Rest In Peace.

Daves Raves! Many bars will be CLOSED on October 25th to 27th.

Top Tip! It’s respectful to wear black and/or white clothing, from October 25th to October 27th. Of course, it’s not compulsory for foreigners, but it shows you’re respectful and it will be appreciated by the Thai people.

Heads Up! The “Old City” in Bangkok will be packed full of mourners. It’s estimated that at least 250,000 Thais will be attending the Royal Funeral.

RESPECTFULLY THERE WILL BE NO UPDATES OCTOBER 25-27

Bangkok Bar Closures Update

Friday, October 13th, 2017

soi nana bangkok 5 - Bangkok Bar Closures Update

NANA PLAZA, SOI COWBOY & PATPONG CLOSED OCTOBER 25-27

UPDATE – A number of Bangkok bars and clubs will CLOSE tonight to respect the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol on October 13th, 2016.

The beer bars, go-go bars, pubs and clubs, are all OPEN on Saturday, October 14th and on Sunday 15th. They are also OPEN next weekend (October 20-22). With so many public holidays in Thailand, I know it can be hard to keep track of them all.

The Royal Funeral of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej will officially take place on Thursday, October 26th. Everybody is advised to wear black clothing, as this will be an extremely sad time for Thailand.

This means that all entertainment venues will (most likely) be CLOSED on October 25th, 26th and 27th. It may well be a good time to take a break from Bangkok.

Dave’s Raves – It’s not demanded that foreigners wear black clothing (October 25-27), but it will be respected by the Thai people.

Dollhouse Pattaya Opens VIP Lounge

Wednesday, September 20th, 2017

The Dollhouse Go-Go Bar down in Sin City, otherwise known as Pattaya are opening a XXX Vip Lounge. The concept is based upon agogo meets gentlemen’s club, all rolled into one. Knowing these guys there will be a few surprises too.

This Friday, September 22nd is the Soft Opening of the XXX VIP Lounge, which promises to provide plenty of pampering and pleasure! This is a format the Thailand’s nightlife scene should have adopted many years ago.

Dollhouse Pattaya - Dollhouse Pattaya Opens VIP Lounge

The concept is to combine the best of East and West, with the raunchy bump ‘n’ grind of Thai gogo dancers and the Western strip club format. The modern day gentlemen’s clubs partly do this, but certainly not entirely.

Daves Raves – I wish The Dollhouse all the best for endeavouring to introduce something fresh to the gogo bar scene in Pattaya.

The Dollhouse is located down Soi 15 Walking Street.

British Pound Bounces Back

Tuesday, September 19th, 2017

british pounds sterling - British Pound Bounces Back

It’s been a good week for the British pound, as it surged against both the American dollar and the Euro.

In what can only be described as a sudden turnaround, the pound has made a surprise comeback. Last week the sterling rose to a one-year high of $1.327 against the American dollar.

Similar to a scene from a Rocky movie, the British sterling was “pounded” against the ropes, but has come out on top. The previous fear of Brexit sent the pound into a spiraling descent, with the Euro continuing to gain in strength for some time now.

The spike in the pound is largely due to the threat of the British Government being forced to raise interest rates. The reason is linked to a rise of inflation, as the decision looms in the British financial atmosphere.

thai baht notes - British Pound Bounces Back

Regarding a very strong Thai baht, there has been some national criticism of the Thai government. Some locals are saying it’s affecting the export market and also that Thailand is becoming a more expensive option.

However, there is more good news for Brits, as the pound has also risen against the Thai baht. A number of disgruntled Brits will say, “About bloody time” and they will no doubt expect more. But, the poor performance of the pound has really affected Brits abroad. Also, the staggering strength of the baht has dented the fixed income of expats, especially British pensioners living in Thailand.

Dare we say the pound is starting to look bullish?! Let’s hope the pound continues to rise to around 50 baht, where it will really start to gain attention.

Best Bang-For-Baht Breakfast

Monday, September 11th, 2017

Bangkok & Pattaya Took Lae Dee

Foodland is a superb value for money supermarket chain. There are branches in both Bangkok and Pattaya that are open 24 hours. They stock a wide range of products at reasonable prices, and they even have a pharmacy section.

Inside each Foodland Supermarket there is a Took Lae Dee Restaurant. The literal translation of Took Lae Dee is “cheap and good” which is a very accurate description. You know the food is both cheap and good, when you see so many locals eating at these Thai style diners.

I still can’t believe that Bangkok is such a huge city and yet, there is a definite lack of 24 hour restaurants. Thankfully, we’ve got Took Lae Dee!

chicken fried rice bangkok - Best Bang-For-Baht Breakfast

The American Breakfast must be the best bang-for-baht you can possibly get anywhere in Thailand. It costs just 79 baht for 2 Eggs, Ham or Sausage, Toast, Butter, Preserves, Orange or Pineapple Juice, plus Tea or Coffee. If you hit it at Happy Hour (05:30-09:00) the American Breakfast is only 62 baht.

In Bangkok, I prefer the Took Lae Dee branches on Sukhumvit Soi 16 and in Patpong Soi 2, because both restaurants have tables to sit comfortably. However, the Took Lae Dee Restaurant on Sukhumvit soi 5 gets very crowded and there are no tables. Also, service can be very slow compared to the other branches, so patience is definitely needed sometimes.

As an added bonus, drinking water is free with refills as well. This will be like paradise to the Cheap Charlie Clan!

Took Lae Dee Thailand - Best Bang-For-Baht Breakfast

The menu has a selection of Thai, Asian and Western dishes, including the tasty Chinese Roast Pork. The Chicken Fried Rice is delicious and as cheap as chips. Took Lae Dee really takes some beating and being open 24 hours, this gives Foodland a great advantage over competitors.

Daves Raves – If you don’t like waiting, walk inside the supermarket and do your shopping. By the time you get back your food will be ready. You can eat in, or take it home along with your shopping. Hey, that’s two jobs done in one!

Bangkok Bank Exchange Rates

Bangkok Bank Exchange Rates - Bangkok Bank Exchange Rates

Today I decided to check Thailand’s Foreign Exchange Rates at Bangkok Bank. Well, it certainly does not look pretty for some nations!

While the American dollar has remained consistent for years, it is not by any means holding a strong stance against the baht. It just sits there, as it has done for ages.

The British pound has fallen the most out of the world’s main currencies, whereas it was previously strong. In general, the piss poor pound has caused a lot of anguish for Brits travelling abroad to many countries.

Meanwhile, the Euro has continued to strengthen against the baht. It sits right up the backside of the British pound. Only a few baht separates the two rival currencies.

Here are today’s Buying Rates announced by Bangkok Bank…

USD = 32.74 (America $50-100)

EUR = 38.89 (Euro Zone)

GBP = 42.46 (United Kingdom)

AUD = 25.80 (Australia)

JPY = 29.86 (Japan)

Stickmania (April 13th 2007)

Monday, September 4th, 2017

Written By Dave The Rave

Throughout the infinite realms of time and cyberspace there lurks an extremely powerful amorphous creature that is an almighty force to be reckoned with. This infinite amorphous creature that engulfs many of our lives is the limitless universe of the internet. Although no one person actually owns the internet, Bill Gates has given it a damned good try – bless him! Without any doubt whatsoever the internet has transformed and revolutionized how freely and effectively information is communicated today. Like a giant pouncing tiger the web world leapt into the millennium and multitudes of websites have emerged as a result. Therefore, this transformation has provided us with enormous information resources and that means massive amounts of information about Thailand. In the 1980’s when I first visited Thailand, there was no such online information because of course it did not exist. We simply followed the recommendations of a friend and perhaps read the odd travel guide. How things change hey? Nowadays every budding blogger has jumped on the bandwagon – whether we really want to know about Bill’s fanatical train-spotting, or Mary’s bone-crushing rock cakes! Totally captivating weblogs, or not as the case may be, it is all out there on the internet.

soi cowboy may 2011 - Stickmania (April 13th 2007)

Whether you love or loathe webmaster columnists, there is one Thailand website that stands out predominantly. Crystal clearly Stickman’s website is the most popular of its genre. For many Thailand readers it is an essential information and news source that has its own dedicated cult following. Ever since I first encountered “Stickman’s Guide to Bangkok” I admit that I was hooked. I think that what makes this contagious creature tick is to do with the fact that the enigmatic Stickman is extremely engaging. Some guys have planned their entire Thailand trips and in some cases planned the BIG move from Farangland to Thailand, entirely from Stickman’s website. Without noticing it at first, slowly but surely Stickman draws you into his realm. “Welcome to my lair”, said the spider to the fly. It’s a scary thought isn’t it?

Personally, I for one remain both very pleased and so relieved to see the return of the main sections of Stickman’s website. What I do know is that I speak with great confidence, when I state that I am most certainly not the only person who shares these sentiments. The mighty army of Stickman fans (and a few foes too) were on the edge of their computer seats for four long months, as they were forced to await the outcome of let us say Stickman’s sojourn away from the cyber scene. Did Stickman’s cyberspacecraft come crashing down? No, it did not but the disruption caused by a certain “Stickman Stalker” just goes to prove what a powerful tool or weapon the internet really can be. Time is a great healer though and here we all are again. Although not quite back where we started, nonetheless we continue on our exciting journey through various time zones, and through the infinite realms of cyberspace. We have lift off… “Warp Factor II Captain Stickman!”

THE STRIP GOGO BAR PATPONG SOI 2

If we take a trip back in time a lot of readers would tune in to read Nite Owl, which used to be the ramblings of Bernard Trink. The old Nite Owl penned his weekly column for decades until he was finally axed by the powers that be at the Bangkok Post. Nite Owl had some fans but most people read Trink’s weekly solely in order to seek Thailand nightlife news. As a result of Nite Owl getting the chop there was a dark, void abyss, but then following that exit came the entrance of the modern day Thailand columnist – none other than Stickman. Incidentally, approaching six years ago saw the introduction of the enormously popular “Stickman Weekly” and this new weekly column took off like a cyberspace rocket.

OK, now fast forward to April 2007 and the “cyberspace chameleon” returns, but under another guise – Stick Mark II. Who is this mysterious Stick Mark II? Much speculation surrounds the identity of Stick Mark II, but you can be assured that Stickman will be watching like a hawk. Whether Stickman is editing it, writing it, or not writing it, he has returned and to me that is the main thing.

I will let you into a little secret that I persuaded Stickman that the Photo Gallery should be updated. The eagle-eyed among you Stickman fans will notice that a NEW Photo Gallery called “Thailand Characters Photo Gallery 2” has been added. In addition to this latest gallery full of terrific images, the entire Stickman Weekly archived columns for 2006 have returned. This means that avid readers can take a trip back in time to Stickmanland. It would appear that in observing my counterpart, I notice that Stick Mark II (whoever he/she is) has integrated images in with the text in his new weekly column. Stick Mark II’s very first column contained a lovely little travelogue about a sojourn to Isaan, that was complimented by some truly picturesque images. This gives a visual impression of an online magazine – may I say very well done!

On a personal note, as an ambitious newcomer to the web world I want everybody to know that Stickman has been very helpful, offering sound advice. My own website DaveTheRaveBangkok.com was launched in November 2006 and Stickman has been completely unselfish in offering me invaluable advice. Us online columnists/webmasters slave away to update our websites and I can tell you that it takes a HUGE amount of time and effort. As friends of mine have pointed out, we just hope that the masses appreciate this free information service. Take what free information, knowledge, and/or entertainment you can and if you are not satisfied then simply change channel. At times there can be some extremely offensive things written about webmasters, but mostly these “keyboard warriors” are invisible. Who are these people? Of course we like to receive constructive criticism, but “babble from the padded cell” is never useful to anybody whatsoever. It is so easy to “talk the talk” but few dare to “walk the walk” and show us how they think it is supposed to be done. Sometimes there is so much pent up venom in the emails that we cannot possibly comprehend what they are trying to say at all. That is clearly their problem. By all means readers should write constructive criticism to webmasters, but please be clear and specific in the message you are trying to convey.

Running a website about Thailand can often be a mixture of pleasure and pain. However, for the most part we enjoy what we do, because we know that the majority appreciate and welcome our online service. I firmly believe that for all the websites out there, you will not find many very good Thailand websites. In terms of accurate, up-to-date and informative Thailand websites, they remain very few and far between. We should therefore appreciate the likes of Stickman who has diligently churned out a weekly column year after year. Believe somebody in the know, when I say that it is no easy task. This is why I have the utmost respect for Stickman’s dedication and hard work over all these years. Stickman can at times be a controversial columnist, but speaking from experience, as a person Stickman is a real gentleman. As for Stickman’s success, the growth of his readership can only be termed as remarkable. Long live Stickmania!

Stickman’s Thoughts:

Gosh Dave, you have me positively blushing.

But you’re right, maintaining a website is a lot of effort, to say nothing of all of the other parts of our sites. You meet some great people along the journey, and a few ratbags as well. But that is all part of the ride!

The Euro Hits Record High

Friday, September 1st, 2017

euro rises to record high - The Euro Hits Record High

The euro has hit $1.20 for the first time since January 2015 as the prospect of a US interest rate rise recedes.

The economic damage caused by “Hurricane Harvey” has led financial analysts to believe the US central bank will not want to risk curbing economic growth.

American experts say, a rise in interest rates tends to draw investors to a currency, taking advantage of the higher returns.

Meanwhile, the euro has itself been gaining against a range of currencies, as the economy improves in the eurozone.

Against the dollar, the euro has risen by almost 15% so far this year. In addition, the euro continues to strengthen against the UK pound and the Thai baht.

I am no expert, but it might be time to buy some euros.

Spending Money For Pattaya

How Much Is Enough?

Here’s the scenario… You are planning a trip to Pattaya City, but you don’t know how much spending money you will need.

Help is at hand, as the guys at Pattaya One News came up with the answer.

Some guys tell us that Pattaya is getting expensive, while others say it remains great bang-for-baht (pun intended). What is the truth?

Is It Time To Visit Pattaya?

Monday, August 28th, 2017

I have been visiting Pattaya since the 1980’s and I used to live there annually for a few months. The consensus of Bangkok expats states, while it is great to get out of The Big Mango sometimes, they can only stand a few days in Pattaya.

I still think Pattaya is a great place to have fun and blow off some steam, or get something else blown off! 🙂

EVEN MODERN PATTAYA IS TRANQUIL AT THE RIGHT TIME OF DAY

My nickname for Pattaya is Pleasure Playground, with more to see and do than just go on a ‘booze cruise’ all over the city. If you don’t like big crowds of rowdy boozers, head for Jomtien Beach, which is home to quieter bars and restaurants.

Pattaya Bangkok - Is It Time To Visit Pattaya?

HARD TO BELIEVE PATTAYA WAS ONCE JUST A TRANQUIL FISHING VILLAGE

Some guys complain about how Walking Street has become so brash and bawdy, but nobody is forced to visit. There are tons of bars and restaurants all over the city, so many that we are spoiled for choice. Research the Internet, see which venues get good reviews and search for places that suit your needs.

No matter how much the powers that be try to suppress the wild reputation, Pattaya is a notorious nightlife capital. It won’t change too much, or they will have to close all of the bars. Pattaya is not a destination for some guys, it’s an addiction!

Floods Start To Hit Thailand

Sunday, August 27th, 2017

It seems my previous blog post Singing The Bangkok Blues aka Thailand Weather Warning, was very accurate. I certainly did not do a rain dance, as I do not like the rainy season. A bit of rain is okay, but I do mean just a bit.

This photo was taken on Saturday night by my friend Erik, who was down at Sukhumvit Soi 22 in Bangkok. We should learn to expect the unexpected.

Stickman Bids Us Farewell

Sunday, August 20th, 2017

The big Bangkok nightlife news of the week is that Stickman has decided to bow out from penning his weekly column. Thailand’s most famous nightlife columnist has decided to start a new chapter in his life. The news has come as a shock to many people, but while close friends are obviously saddened by the news, they are not really surprised. It’s sad to see my old mate and supporter, Stickman, hang up his journalistic boots. We have been good friends for many years.

The Stickman Weekly column rose in popularity very quickly and became an institution for a multitude of followers across the globe. This most popular online column of its genre started back in April 2001. Coincidentally, we both moved to live in Bangkok that same year, which was almost 20 years ago. Ironically, we both met at Hollywood Carousel Bar on the top floor of Nana Plaza, when I was the manager.

While it is true that some people did not like the way he reported certain aspects of the goings-on in Bangkok, they kept on reading Stickman Weekly. I would say to them, ‘If you dislike Stickman so much, why do you read his column?’ I think I made a fair point, don’t you?

I know some bar and nightclub owners had issues with what he wrote from time to time. But, let’s be honest, so many of us religiously read his weekly column for years and years. Even the Stickman detractors wouldn’t miss it, and that’s because he writes very well and often came up with great articles.

Beach Road Pattaya - Stickman Bids Us Farewell

It struck some guys that Stick appeared to be like a fish out of water amid the naughty nightlife scene. I can tell you, Stick is a very health-conscious guy, who never smoked, never took drugs, rarely stayed out late, and rarely ever got drunk. In terms of being a good boy, he is a model farang, if there ever was one. But, Stick is such a talented, articulate writer, and has such a smooth flow of words that he captivates his audience. As Toby said, ‘Many are called to such a path, but few are chosen.’ Just like an addiction, Stick’s cult followers kept coming back for more.

SUKHUMVIT SOI 4 BANGKOK 2017

Stick was a professional schoolteacher and as the saying goes, ‘They teach because they cannot do.’ However, in this case, Stick did do it very well. Perhaps like me, you would like to read his story. Hey Stick, when are you going to write your book?!

Despite his online fame, he has always been polite and showed patience with people. This is particularly true when an extremely excited Dave the Rave would almost talk him to sleep. It was like trying to go the wrong way up a busy one-way street! Joking aside, Stickman always supported and encouraged me throughout my Bangkok nightlife career and also in my efforts to become a photographer and blogger.

Not only could Stickman Bangkok engage his readers, grabbing us with a firm hand, but Sticks always gave the right advice and guidance for anybody visiting Thailand. I remember guys telling me they used his website as a guide book and threw their copies of Lonely Planet into the rubbish bin.

MONSOON SEASON THAILAND 2017

Stick is also a very accomplished photographer. His photographs are exceptional, especially Stick’s special skill at capturing street scenes. I told Stick that his photos are so good he must include them in Stickman Weekly. I felt his photography was underused and underrated, even by Stick himself. This is how all the photos started to appear in his weekly column. I felt the photographs gave it a more interesting magazine look and, of course, we all love some eye candy.

For me, the Thailand online scene will be less interesting without Stickman. In my book, he bows out a legend. I wish you all the very best Stick!
