Never Hurry A Curry!

Kiwi Pub Curry & Pint Night

When I lived in England, I have had my fair share of curry nights I call tell you. In fact, Indian Curry is now Britain’s most popular food. It beats Fish & Chips, Roast Dinners and Chinese Takeaway hands down.

I remember an Indian chef explaining to me the art of making a great curry. He said with a wry smile, “Never hurry a curry!” Well that just cracked me up!

The Kiwi Sports Bar & Grill hosts “Monday Curry Night” with a choice of Chicken, or Beef Jalfrezi, Rogan Josh, or Tikka Masala. It comes with Steamed Rice, Garlic Pita Bread, and a choice of a Heineken Pint, or a Tiger Pint. You get all that for just 279฿

Stickmania (April 13th 2007)

Monday, September 4th, 2017

Written By Dave The Rave

Throughout the infinite realms of time and cyberspace there lurks an extremely powerful amorphous creature that is an almighty force to be reckoned with. This infinite amorphous creature that engulfs many of our lives is the limitless universe of the internet. Although no one person actually owns the internet, Bill Gates has given it a damned good try – bless him! Without any doubt whatsoever the internet has transformed and revolutionized how freely and effectively information is communicated today. Like a giant pouncing tiger the web world leapt into the millennium and multitudes of websites have emerged as a result. Therefore, this transformation has provided us with enormous information resources and that means massive amounts of information about Thailand. In the 1980’s when I first visited Thailand, there was no such online information because of course it did not exist. We simply followed the recommendations of a friend and perhaps read the odd travel guide. How things change hey? Nowadays every budding blogger has jumped on the bandwagon – whether we really want to know about Bill’s fanatical train-spotting, or Mary’s bone-crushing rock cakes! Totally captivating weblogs, or not as the case may be, it is all out there on the internet.

Whether you love or loathe webmaster columnists, there is one Thailand website that stands out predominantly. Crystal clearly Stickman’s website is the most popular of its genre. For many Thailand readers it is an essential information and news source that has its own dedicated cult following. Ever since I first encountered “Stickman’s Guide to Bangkok” I admit that I was hooked. I think that what makes this contagious creature tick is to do with the fact that the enigmatic Stickman is extremely engaging. Some guys have planned their entire Thailand trips and in some cases planned the BIG move from Farangland to Thailand, entirely from Stickman’s website. Without noticing it at first, slowly but surely Stickman draws you into his realm. “Welcome to my lair”, said the spider to the fly. It’s a scary thought isn’t it?

Personally, I for one remain both very pleased and so relieved to see the return of the main sections of Stickman’s website. What I do know is that I speak with great confidence, when I state that I am most certainly not the only person who shares these sentiments. The mighty army of Stickman fans (and a few foes too) were on the edge of their computer seats for four long months, as they were forced to await the outcome of let us say Stickman’s sojourn away from the cyber scene. Did Stickman’s cyberspacecraft come crashing down? No, it did not but the disruption caused by a certain “Stickman Stalker” just goes to prove what a powerful tool or weapon the internet really can be. Time is a great healer though and here we all are again. Although not quite back where we started, nonetheless we continue on our exciting journey through various time zones, and through the infinite realms of cyberspace. We have lift off… “Warp Factor II Captain Stickman!”

If we take a trip back in time a lot of readers would tune in to read Nite Owl, which used to be the ramblings of Bernard Trink. The old Nite Owl penned his weekly column for decades until he was finally axed by the powers that be at the Bangkok Post. Nite Owl had some fans but most people read Trink’s weekly solely in order to seek Thailand nightlife news. As a result of Nite Owl getting the chop there was a dark, void abyss, but then following that exit came the entrance of the modern day Thailand columnist – none other than Stickman. Incidentally, approaching six years ago saw the introduction of the enormously popular “Stickman Weekly” and this new weekly column took off like a cyberspace rocket.

OK, now fast forward to April 2007 and the “cyberspace chameleon” returns, but under another guise – Stick Mark II. Who is this mysterious Stick Mark II? Much speculation surrounds the identity of Stick Mark II, but you can be assured that Stickman will be watching like a hawk. Whether Stickman is editing it, writing it, or not writing it, he has returned and to me that is the main thing.

I will let you into a little secret that I persuaded Stickman that the Photo Gallery should be updated. The eagle-eyed among you Stickman fans will notice that a NEW Photo Gallery called “Thailand Characters Photo Gallery 2” has been added. In addition to this latest gallery full of terrific images, the entire Stickman Weekly archived columns for 2006 have returned. This means that avid readers can take a trip back in time to Stickmanland. It would appear that in observing my counterpart, I notice that Stick Mark II (whoever he/she is) has integrated images in with the text in his new weekly column. Stick Mark II’s very first column contained a lovely little travelogue about a sojourn to Isaan, that was complimented by some truly picturesque images. This gives a visual impression of an online magazine – may I say very well done!

On a personal note, as an ambitious newcomer to the web world I want everybody to know that Stickman has been very helpful, offering sound advice. My own website DaveTheRaveBangkok.com was launched in November 2006 and Stickman has been completely unselfish in offering me invaluable advice. Us online columnists/webmasters slave away to update our websites and I can tell you that it takes a HUGE amount of time and effort. As friends of mine have pointed out, we just hope that the masses appreciate this free information service. Take what free information, knowledge, and/or entertainment you can and if you are not satisfied then simply change channel. At times there can be some extremely offensive things written about webmasters, but mostly these “keyboard warriors” are invisible. Who are these people? Of course we like to receive constructive criticism, but “babble from the padded cell” is never useful to anybody whatsoever. It is so easy to “talk the talk” but few dare to “walk the walk” and show us how they think it is supposed to be done. Sometimes there is so much pent up venom in the emails that we cannot possibly comprehend what they are trying to say at all. That is clearly their problem. By all means readers should write constructive criticism to webmasters, but please be clear and specific in the message you are trying to convey.

Running a website about Thailand can often be a mixture of pleasure and pain. However, for the most part we enjoy what we do, because we know that the majority appreciate and welcome our online service. I firmly believe that for all the websites out there, you will not find many very good Thailand websites. In terms of accurate, up-to-date and informative Thailand websites, they remain very few and far between. We should therefore appreciate the likes of Stickman who has diligently churned out a weekly column year after year. Believe somebody in the know, when I say that it is no easy task. This is why I have the utmost respect for Stickman’s dedication and hard work over all these years. Stickman can at times be a controversial columnist, but speaking from experience, as a person Stickman is a real gentleman. As for Stickman’s success, the growth of his readership can only be termed as remarkable. Long live Stickmania!

Stickman’s Thoughts:

Gosh Dave, you have me positively blushing.

But you’re right, maintaining a website is a lot of effort, to say nothing of all of the other parts of our sites. You meet some great people along the journey, and a few ratbags as well. But that is all part of the ride!

The Euro Hits Record High

euro rises to record high - The Euro Hits Record High

The euro has hit $1.20 for the first time since January 2015 as the prospect of a US interest rate rise recedes.

The economic damage caused by “Hurricane Harvey” has led financial analysts to believe the US central bank will not want to risk curbing economic growth.

American experts say, a rise in interest rates tends to draw investors to a currency, taking advantage of the higher returns.

Meanwhile, the euro has itself been gaining against a range of currencies, as the economy improves in the eurozone.

Against the dollar, the euro has risen by almost 15% so far this year. In addition, the euro continues to strengthen against the UK pound and the Thai baht.

I am no expert, but it might be time to buy some euros.

Spending Money For Pattaya

How Much Is Enough?

Here’s the scenario… You are planning a trip to Pattaya City, but you don’t know how much spending money you will need.

Help is at hand, as the guys at Pattaya One News came up with the answer.

Some guys tell us that Pattaya is getting expensive, while others say it remains great bang-for-baht (pun intended). What is the truth?

Is It Time To Visit Pattaya?

Monday, August 28th, 2017

I have been visiting Pattaya since the 1980’s and I used to live there annually for a few months. The consensus of Bangkok expats states, while it is great to get out of The Big Mango sometimes, they can only stand a few days in Pattaya.

I still think Pattaya is a great place to have fun and blow off some steam, or get something else blown off! 🙂

EVEN MODERN PATTAYA IS TRANQUIL AT THE RIGHT TIME OF DAY

My nickname for Pattaya is Pleasure Playground, with more to see and do than just go on a ‘booze cruise’ all over the city. If you don’t like big crowds of rowdy boozers, head for Jomtien Beach, which is home to quieter bars and restaurants.

Pattaya Bangkok - Is It Time To Visit Pattaya?

HARD TO BELIEVE PATTAYA WAS ONCE JUST A TRANQUIL FISHING VILLAGE

Some guys complain about how Walking Street has become so brash and bawdy, but nobody is forced to visit. There are tons of bars and restaurants all over the city, so many that we are spoiled for choice. Research the Internet, see which venues get good reviews and search for places that suit your needs.

No matter how much the powers that be try to suppress the wild reputation, Pattaya is a notorious nightlife capital. It won’t change too much, or they will have to close all of the bars. Pattaya is not a destination for some guys, it’s an addiction!

Floods Start To Hit Thailand

Sunday, August 27th, 2017

It seems my previous blog post Singing The Bangkok Blues aka Thailand Weather Warning, was very accurate. I certainly did not do a rain dance, as I do not like the rainy season. A bit of rain is okay, but I do mean just a bit.

This photo was taken on Saturday night by my friend Erik, who was down at Sukhumvit Soi 22 in Bangkok. We should learn to expect the unexpected.

Amazing Thailand Street Food Vendors

Street Eat Beat!

It is important what you believe these days, especially with the increasing amount of inaccurate reports and fake news in the various forms of media. It is so often the biggest media companies who are  the worst offenders.

Fairly recently it was reported that all Bangkok street food vendors were to be removed, but this did not happen. Sukhumvit Road street vendors remain out in force and I was out taking some photos this week to show you.

Don’t Worry We’ve Got You Covered

Nana Plaza Beer Garden

As fate has it, just as you approach the neon jungle it hammers down with rain. Well, you don’t have to worry, because the Nana Beer Garden has a large retractable roof. Never fear Nana Beer Garden is here!

Talking of large roofs, you will be completely protected from the rain at the newly opened Rajah Complex. Located further down Soi Nana, the Rajah Complex has a HUGE rooftop. It’s similar to those enormous Petrol Station roofs. While you sit at Hillary 1 Bar getting wet on the inside, you will be dry on the outside.

Another One Bites The Dust

I was not at all surprised to see that Night Witch Bangkok Bar has been completely dismantled inside. Let’s face it there was more atmosphere on the moon. It never took off and I heard from Stickboy that Khun Meow has taken it over. It is thought to become a pool bar. Good news for Soi Nana fans, because Hillary Group are good operators. I wish them good luck.

Still at Rajah Complex (for want of a better name), the Hillary Group recently launched Angels 4 Bar. It is located at the entrance, directly opposite the old Jools Bar. It’s a cosy bar with angels sitting pretty with their halos.

Thailand Weather Warning

Being English, I guess I have that stereotypical obsession for the weather. It’s that time of year again, when the heavens open up and down comes the rain. The Thai authorities are telling us not to ignore flood warnings, especially in certain provinces, where flash floods can and do occur.

MONSOON SEASON IN THAILAND 2017

The rain in Thailand comes down suddenly and within minutes the roads can start to flood. If you ever get caught unprepared in a heavy downpour, you can buy an umbrella and/or a raincoat from the numerous 7 Eleven shops. Also, make sure during the rainy season you have suitable footwear.

Just be prepared, because the worst of the torrential rain is yet to come. The photo below depicts how Thai street vendors protect themselves and their goods against the elements. Rain does not stop play!

A Tale Of Two Citys

Sunday, June 25th, 2017

Although I don’t like sounding negative, it has been yet another quiet month for many bar bosses around Bangkok and from what I have seen myself and heard from my “ravers” things haven’t been much better in Pattaya either. To add fuel to the fire, there is more heat on the gogo bars from the MIB (Men In Brown), this is especially the case down in Sin City.

Where did all the big spenders go? This seems to be a question many bar owners are asking themselves. Do we sing Simply Red’s “Money’s Too Tight To Mention” as an appropriate phrase?! The clot plot thickens, as a number of folks find themselves with less and less disposable income.

When I ran Angelwitch GoGo Bar several years ago, we regularly had customers running up chunky bills, without even batting a eyelid. These days it seems people are much more careful about spending their money and are also looking for better bang-for-baht. Which begs the question; are gogo bars still offering good value for money? The dreaded coyote curse (agency dancers) has upset many a sexpat, with a number of bars and especially, bar girls pricing themselves out of the market. In fact, as an example of this, the Stumble Inn Group have already steered themselves in the direction of the more profitable beer bars.

However, as a former bar manager, I have witnessed a considerable drop in the “spender gender” with the cash-constipated clan, trying to make you believe they are down to  their last dollar. I say this in defense of the bars. The times I have seen a major debate (as though it’s a life, or death decision), whether they should order a drink, or not. These frugal folks need to be reminded that these are bars and not museums. There are a number of time-wasters out there. Another point is you can’t blame the bars for everything, which includes certain piss poor foreign currencies that struggle against a strong Thai baht.

My mate Toby was at a Bangkok gogo bar the other night and it was very quiet. There was just a few girls doing the skytrain shuffle on stage, staring into oblivion. Toby had a couple of Johnnie Walker Black’s and bought one gogo girl a lady drink – the bill was already 1,000 baht. I would advise you to ask what the drink prices are before you get stung!

Besides Thailand, is this becoming a universal problem? Back in Britain, the pubs and clubs are closing at an alarming rate, because people just can’t afford to drink in pubs and clubs anymore. If they want to sink some amber nectar, they often buy cheap booze from Supermarkets and drink at home. All of the nightclubs in my home town are closed down and people are forced to travel miles to enjoy clubland.

Meanwhile, back in Bangkok! There’s another part of this vast, sprawling metropolis that is booming. Welcome to clubland! I mention this, because this week the mega popular Insanity Nightclub is moving to Sukhumvit, Soi 11, which has become clubbers central. This “Insanity Gravity” will only strengthen Soi 11 as the main club hub in this inimitable city.

I have not seen the inside of Insanity Nightclub yet (located next to the former Q Bar), but I do know a ton of money has been spent on making it state of the art. Before I forget, the Opening Night this Thursday, June 29th.

It seems money is definitely rolling into the clubs and this seems to be a BIG shift from many moons ago, when clubs were very limited in Bangkok. I remember Thailand in the 1980’s with two of the most famous being Marine Disco in Pattaya and Angels Disco (Nana Hotel), which is now EQ Late Night Club. Things have really come a long way and this is indeed a very positive aspect of Bangkok’s nightlife.

The Castle Fetish Club in Pattaya opens a men only fetish club on July 1st. It is located next door and it is called Sodom.   When you go there just make sure you go through the right door, or you might be in for a bit of surprise. Sounds like a good prank for a stag night to me  🙂

Mercury GoGo Bar (Middle Floor Nana Plaza) is undergoing renovations. It turns a shade of pink on July 1st, as it reopens as Mercury Ladyboy Bar.

Not Real Chinese Food It’s Better!

Sunday, April 23rd, 2017

Growing up in the 1970’s, I have very happy memories of nipping down the local Chinese Restaurant and ordering a C3 or an M4 off  the set menu.  Sweet & Sour Pork, Chicken Chow Mein, and Egg Fried Rice. The price was an exorbitant one pound and that included  prawn crackers and a coke!

Since then I have always loved Western Style Chinese Food.  That includes things like Crispy Duck, Pancakes & Hoi Sin Sauce, plus Beef & Black Bean Sauce. The sort of food you would never find in all of China.

Apparently, Chinatown here in Bangkok is one of the largest and oldest in the world, but can you get a decent Egg Fried Rice, or Chicken Chow Mein?  Not a chance. Pig’s Innards no problem, Bird’s Nest Soup, or Lizard’s Entrails, but  a nice plate of Crispy Duck and Pancakes… Gotta be dreaming! 🙁

That is why I got quite excited when I ran into Joe (now managing the Dragon’s Head) down at The Pickled Liver Pub the other night and he told me all about the Golden Bowl, (which I have heard of but never tried). But, they are now serving out of the Dragon’s Head on Patpong 2 and I thought, I better get down there sharpish and give it a try.

wombat at dragons head patpong

The Regulators Live @ Dragon’s Head Patpong 2 (next to Foodland)

Well, I got there on Friday night, with my mate Toby and we ordered the Beef with Chilli in Black Bean Sauce, Chicken Chow Mein and the Crispy Duck, Pancakes and Hoi Sin Sauce. I know you might be thinking… Dave The Rave Chicken Chow Mein really?!  But, I always say, “Don’t be shy give it a try!”

hot thai girls at dragon's head patpong

Dragon’s Head was busy on Friday with a few good sorts about 🙂

The food was excellent and  the atmosphere at the Dragon’s Head was great with live music from The Regulators. This tiny bar now seems to be making waves, as a real live music venue and is busy most nights. It certainly was on Friday.

After polishing off the delicious Chinese, I did pop into the recently opened Glamour Bar, right opposite Foodland. I have to say I was impressed.  They had over 30 girls in total and they all looked good.  The air conditioning was good, the drinks were nice, the service was polite and I liked the comfy sofas. Could I have just caught it on a good night?  Well maybe,  but the experience did leave me thinking I wouldn’t mind going back for another look and at the end of the day if you’re running a bar, that’s the result you want.

Glamour bar patpong 2

Girls look nice in white stockings and tight white shorts

The Strip was a bit quiet as was the Black Pagoda, but these venues have been going so long now you have to ask yourself the question, does it matter. It’s a bit like going to a well know pub in your home town. It’s a place people know and will always go to because it’s familiar. If you go there and it’s a bit quiet one night, it won’t stop you going there again. You’ll be back  when you’re next in that part of town because, as I’ve always said,  people do like to go places that they know and where people know them.

This Friday there is a big underground live music event Joe was telling me on Patpong called Gong of the Pong, which will have several live bands playing at the Black Pagoda and at the Dragon’s Head. This event is expected to pull a couple of hundred people, or more, so I shall probably pop down again with my camera and yeah, I might well have another Chow Mein while I’m down there 🙂
