NANA PLAZA UPDATE MARCH 2010

Bangkok’s adult entertainment areas continue to do business as usual during these times of political uncertainty. Currently, Thailand’s political arena remains unpredictable. Thailand’s capital is a huge, sprawling metropolis and therefore, life goes on as normal for the vast majority. These are the facts from inside the arena.

ALL QUIET ON THE EASTERN FRONT  (MARCH 2010)

Generally, hotels and nightlife areas in Bangkok are considerably quieter, due to both internal and external problems. But of course, Thailand is by no means alone, as the world economy falls into a dark, deep abyss. In fact, some friends have made spontaneous decisions to visit Thailand, in order to avoid the rat race back in Farangland. Overall, bar trade and tourism has fallen sharply. Only the most popular bars and entertainment venues are doing a brisk trade. These are the facts of the matter.

NANA PLAZA HAS A FEW MORE YEARS (MARCH 2010)

Despite some negative rumours flying around about Nana Entertainment Plaza, some bars continue to do business as normal… Well, that is as normal as the neon jungle can be! Admittedly, the go-go bars are not as wild as they used to be. Sadly, the ‘Skytrain shuffle’ has become the norm in too many go-go bars. Blatant ’showing’ or nudity was outlawed several years ago, but it has returned to certain go-go bars. Therefore, it is fair to say that Nana Plaza had previously lost the advantage of ’showing’ to Soi Cowboy. (Never underestimate what a tremendous advantage this gives a particular district). These police politics may be confusing to some people, but remember that Soi Cowboy is under a completely different jurisdiction to Nana Plaza. Nana Plaza is located in the Lumpini Police District and Soi Cowboy is located in the Tonglor Police District. Incidentally, Patpong falls under the jurisdiction of the Bangrak Police District. Therefore, Nana Plaza is located in a high profile area. For example, The Landmark Hotel and the JW Marriott Hotel are just around the corner from Soi Nana. Despite what the killjoys say, Nana Plaza is very resilient and still thrives in high season, when the tourists arrive. In some ways Nana Plaza has become the new Patpong. There are now just under 3 years left before the end of the 30-year Master Lease. I spoke to Khun Rakesh of Nana Castle Company Limited. Khun Rakesh said that there were no plans to change anything at this time. Furthermore, even after the 30-year lease has expired, no final decision has been made. As most experienced people know, a lot can happen in 3 years in Thailand. In the meantime, party on people!

NANA PLAZA UPDATE MARCH 2010

In several go-go bars in Nana Plaza, a certain amount of ’showing’ has returned. If you who are interesed in seeing more, you should visit Angelwitch, Erotica, Hollywood Carousel, Mandarin, Mercury, Rainbow 1, 2, 3 & 4, and Spankys.  The format in most bars is mono bikinis.  Hollwood Carousel has adopted the format of birthday suits.

NANA PLAZA GOES UP TO ANOTHER LEVEL (JANUARY 2010)

The OTIS escalator on the right-hand side as you enter Nana Plaza, is still working just fine. Also, the entrance to Nana Plaza remains clear of all motorbikes. In addition, their is a lift on either side. Following the tragic Santika Club fire in Bangkok, people are more fire safety conscious and rightly so. The Santika inferno killed 67 people.

BUTT OUT!  The majority of the go-go bars in Nana Plaza are strictly “NO SMOKING” which includes the four Rainbow Go-Go Bars. The nights of constantly smoke-filled bars appear to be banished forever. However, there are still some go-go bars that allow smoking. Ask around and you will soon find out.

CALLING ALL SMOKERS (MARCH 2010)

Note that you can smoke in Lucky Lukes Bar and in a few of the go-go bars in Nana Plaza. However, you are usually asked to go outside. I think this helps chain-smokers cut down on the amount of cigarettes, and it doen’t upset the non-smokers.

NANA ENTERTAINMENT PLAZA  OVERVIEW

Nana Entertainment Plaza is known as “NEP” for short, or as some trendy guys say, “Nana.” It is not easy to envisage that Nana Plaza was once a quiet, little shopping mall. Today Nana Entertainment Plaza is a three-storey atrium with a difference. The difference is that booze and babes are on offer. Nana Plaza comprises of a cluster of go-go bars and beer bars. NEP offers a rather different form of “entertainment” so think carefully before you invite your mother! Joking apart, Nana Plaza has shaken off its former filthy image due to much stricter control by the Thai authorities. Most people are pleased that the disgusting and degrading Patpong style “magic pussy shows” are history. However, nowadays it is still quite tame compared to previous years. But, considering the restrictions that have been placed upon Nana Plaza, it has remained extremely resilient. When you think that NEP is a red-light district, it offers something of a “carnal carnival” atmosphere. This is reflected in the fact that Nana Plaza has become something of a tourist attraction over the past few years. In fact, some people have labelled Nana Plaza as the new Patpong. Nowadays, tourists and other infrequent visitors make up the largest percentage of the clientele.

NANA PLAZA ENTRANCE REMAINS CLEAR - (JANUARY 2010)

Hooray! The Nana Plaza management finally cleared the entrance of all motorbikes. Motorbikes have now been banned from blocking the entrance. Now it is much more convenient to enter and exit Nana Plaza. More importantly, the only available emergency exit remains clear on a nightly basis. This must be a record for Nana!

NANA PLAZA LADY BOYS (JANUARY 2010)

Nana Plaza comprises of beer bars and go-go bars, but some of the go-go bars are full of katoeys, which is the Thai word for lady boys. You need to be aware that Nana Plaza now has FIVE lady boy go-go bars. The lady boy go-go bars are - Obsession (ground level), Temptations (middle level), Casanova (middle level), Cascade (top level), and Carnival (top level). Some Thai lady boys are like fashion models. They are glamourous and can be very deceptive. Make no doubts about it, they are transsexuals. For some visitors to Nana Plaza, this is where the curiosity factor kicks in. In an eccentric way, the katoeys in Nana Plaza have become a tourist attraction. So many times I hear farangs say, “Just taking the Nana Newbies to a katoey bar.” Currently in Soi Cowboy there are no katoey bars, so this makes Nana Plaza different in that respect. You should be aware that most Thais are not homophobic and therefore, lady boys are accepted in Thai society. Whether you love or loathe Thailand’s unofficial third gender, katoeys are part of Thailand’s nightlife scene.

LADY BOY ALERT (MARCH 2010) - Be aware that ‘katoey’ or lady boy pickpockets hang around lower Sukhumvit late at night. They often work in groups, so be streetwise. Do not be aggressive towards them (conflict avoidance), but never let a lady boy get too close to you. These katoeys are deviously good at distracting you, while they steal your cash and valuables. Also, be aware that katoeys do try to drug unsuspecting farangs. Don’t say that I didn’t warn you!

EXPLORING THE ORIGINS OF NANA PLAZA

The first bars in Nana Plaza emerged in 1982 and at that time, there was less than a handful. Lucky Luke’s Bar with its famous wagon wheels was the first to open. Lucky Luke’s made history by becoming the oldest bar in Nana Plaza. Remarkably, it is still open today, all these years later. In 1984 a farang haven appeared. Peter opened Woodstock Bar & Grill, which for many years was thought as the best music bar in Thailand. Woodstock Bar & Grill also won the prestigious award of “Best Burger In Bangkok.” Just before Woodstock relocated to Tonglor, I attended Woodstock’s 20th Anniversary Party. Incidentally, the 20th Anniversary Party was also Woodstock’s Farewell Party. As we were leaving Nana Plaza, an emotional Peter thanked me for being one of his most loyal customers. Woodstock Bar moved and took some of Nana Plaza’s nostalgia along with its departure. Those of us that were here during the golden years in Nana Plaza are fortunate enough to have experienced it. Whatever happens to Nana Plaza in the future, I know that fond memories will remain with me forever.

HOW DO I GET TO NANA PLAZA?

Nana Entertainment Plaza is located on Sukhumvit Road inside Soi 4. Nana Plaza is conveniently situated directly opposite Nana Hotel. You can easily get to Nana Plaza via several modes of transportation. You can take the Skytrain to the BTS Nana station. From the BTS Nana it is a short walk past the Landmark Hotel into Soi Nana Every taxi driver, tuk-tuk driver and motorbike taxi boy knows the location. Just say, “Soi Nana” and away you go. With tuk-tuk drivers and motorcycle taxi boys make sure that you negotiate the price in advance. When you get into a metered taxi, it is advisable to sit behind the taxi driver, especially if you are female. Before the driver sets off for Soi Nana, check that he has turned the meter on. Whatever happens try to keep cool and maintain your composure. It is most important to avoid confrontation with the Thai people. You might think you are arguing with one Thai man, but a gang of Thai men will appear from nowhere in seconds. Remember guys, we are on their turf. Always carry plenty of small change. Some taxi drivers are notorious for stating that they have no change. What is supposed to be a 35 Baht journey could cost you 100 Baht if you don’t have the exact amount. A supply of 20 Baht notes comes in very handy for travelling around Bangkok.

GO-GO GURU GUIDE TO NANA PLAZA

Below are descriptions and locations of the bars in Nana Plaza. They are listed in alphabetical order. We start on the GROUND LEVEL, move up to the MIDDLE LEVEL and go up to the TOP LEVEL. Updates will appear, so make sure you check the dates on each listing. Let me take you for a nightseeing tour of Nana Plaza. Welcome to the neon jungle!

NANA PLAZA GO-GO BARS (GROUND LEVEL)

BIG DOG’S BAR (UPDATE MARCH 2010)

The “Big Dog” of Soi Nana sits right on the left-hand corner at the entrance to Nana Plaza. It has the best location for observing the comings and goings in both Nana Plaza and along Soi Nana. It comes as little surprise that Big Dog’s Bar draws a busy crowd from early evening until closing time. Big Dogs Bar operates with two shifts of bar girls. Still remains the most popular beer bar in Nana Plaza. The friendly Canadian Walter is doing a good job of running Big Dog’s Bar with his Thai team. (Update - June 2009) - Big Dogs Bar has two plasma TV screens, which show major sports events. They stock a good range of bottled beers and spirits. Friendly bargirls are an added bonus, although Big Dog’s has less attractive bar girls than previously. However, Big Dog’s still draws the crowds from afternoon until closing time.

(UPDATE MARCH 2010) - Not a lot of change in terms of popularity. But, fewer bar girls and definitely a drop in lookers. A sign of the times. Pleased to report that Walter is still running Big Dogs Bar and he insists on cheaper drink prices. Cheers!

HOLLYWOOD ROCK GO-GO BAR

Hollywood Rock is located on the right-hand side as you enter Nana Plaza. This medium sized go-go bar is situated next to Rainbow 2 Go-Go Bar and Play Skool Go-Go Bar. At one time during the 1990’s, the originally named Hollywood Royale was voted the “Best Go-Go Bar In Bangkok.” In the beginning it was known for its raunchy and risqué sex shows. Then, under new ownership the name was changed to Hollywood Rock. This particular go-go bar developed a good reputation for having some very sexy go-go dancers. Following that the Crown Group took it over and remodelled it. Nowadays, farang veterans can barely recognise the new Hollywood Rock. When co-owners Kevin and Anton left Hollywood Rock, it was the end of an era. Today Hollywood Rock looks like a boxing stadium, because a square stage in the middle is surrounded by tiered seating.

(UPDATE MARCH 2010) - The go-go dancers wear full bikinis and currently there are no shows. Usually quiet and unassuming, but sometimes there are a few gems to be discovered here. Not much change, but a few of the service girls are attractive. This is another go-go bar owned the Crown Group.

LOLLIPOP GO-GO BAR

Lollipop is the first go-go bar on the left-hand side as you enter Nana Plaza. Walk past Big Dog’s Bar and you will see Lollipop Go-Go Bar sitting right next to the concrete staircase. The Crown Group also owns Lollipop. The outside bar area is usually more popular than the go-go bar inside. Unfortunately, an outrageous katoey (lady-boy) barks out across the room on the microphone. (Update - January 2010) - Currently, Lollipop has a replenished line-up of cute go-go girls. Some of the dolly birds are farang friendly. This place can get quite lively and the outside bar is another good people watching spot. Occasionally worth a visit. Unfortunately, the katoey management insist on a policy of harassing customers for drinks. You need to be aware of that. Lollipop is yet another go-go bar owned by the Crown Group.

LADY BOY ALERT (JANUARY 2010) - Outrageous ‘katoey’ or lady boy mamasans run this go-go bar. Katoeys in general are notorious for their aggressive attitudes. I thought I had better warn you straight guys!

LUCKY LUKE’S BAR

Historically the oldest beer bar in Nana Plaza, and old Lucky Luke’s is still going strong. It does not usually draw that much of a crowd, but it does have a slow but steady flow of customers. Lucky Luke’s Bar is another good spot to watch the comings and goings inside Nana Plaza. Not surprisingly, Lucky Lukes can draw a good crowd on occasions.

(UPDATE MARCH 2010) - Still continues to draw a decent crowd and it is a great viewpoint for the comings and goings in Nana Plaza. The Thai girls here are farang friendly.

ATTENTION SMOKERS (UPDATE JANUARY 2010)

Because it is not an enclosed bar, smoking is still permitted.

OBSESSION GO-GO BAR

When the Crown Group took over Obsession Go-Go Bar it was turned into a katoey (lady-boy) go-go bar. Obsession is next to Rainbow 2 Go-Go Bar in the far right corner on the ground level. Said to have some attractive katoeys, but I can assure you that I’m no ’sexpert’ in this area!

BOYS WILL BE BOYS - Some guys might be convinced that they are women. However, be careful, because they all still have the full landing gear!

PHARAOH’S BAR

Pharaoh’s Bar stares you in the face as you enter Nana Plaza. It is the beer bar directly facing the entrance to Nana Plaza. Owned by the Crown Group this is quite popular with those who want to relax and people watch. A good observation post for watching the bargirl parade, as the multitudes of dolly birds enters and exits like a busy train station.

PLAY SKOOL GO-GO BAR

Situated on the right-hand side as you enter Nana Plaza, Play Skool Go-Go Bar sits in-between Hollywood Rock Go-Go Bar and Rainbow 1 Go-Go Bar. For many years Play Skool has always been something of an institution in Nana Plaza. Renowned for playing classic rock music, it is one of the few go-go bars, where you can enjoy good ole rock ‘n’ roll.

(UPDATE MARCH 2010) - Currently still operating to a format of full bikinis and no shows. Unfortunately, the owners of Play Skool have other priorities (several bars in Soi Cowboy) and therefore, it is often left unattended. The go-go dancers are friendly enough, but it has to be said that Play Skool has a very average line-up. Nowadays, Play Skool is merely a shadow of its former self, but used to be one of the most popular go-go bars in Nana Plaza. Sad but true.

PRETTY LADY GO-GO BAR

Located on the left-hand side as you enter Nana Plaza, Pretty Lady Go-Go Bar is the next go-go bar down from Lollipop. Back in the 1990’s Pretty Lady was classed by many people as one of the very best go-go bars in Bangkok. For many years, Pretty Lady had a loyal following and her reputation alone continues to this day to attract customers. Currently Pretty Lady run a Happy Hour up until 9:00pm. Standard drinks are 80 Baht, which also includes San Mig Light. With the added value of a Happy Hour, Pretty Lady is a good place to start your rounds in Nana Plaza. Furthermore, standard drinks are only 120 Baht, which makes Pretty Lady one of the cheaper go-go bars in Nana Plaza. Currently, Pretty Lady has quite a good line-up of go-go dancers, who will interact with you. Well worth a visit. The Happy Hour is still going and the go-go dancers are still flashing their wares under their skirts. Pretty Lady took on a new mamasan. The new mamasan is a pleasant woman, who has been going up to customers and politely introducing herself. As most of you know, a good mamasan can in some cases make or break a go-go bar.

(UPDATE MARCH 2010) - Pretty Lady has recently taken on a bunch of go-go dancers from one or two other go-go bars in Nana Plaza. Although a bit hit or miss, generally speaking the line-up has improved, so it’s worth checking out.

RAINBOW 1 GO-GO BAR

Rainbow 1 Go-Go Bar is the first go-go bar on the right-hand side on the ground level, as you enter Nana Plaza. Rainbow 1 is nestled between Play Skool Go-Go Bar (left) and Spirit House Bar (right). With the advantage of prime location, Rainbow 1 Go-Go Bar draws the masses on a nightly basis. A few years ago, Rainbow 1 was fully refurbished, which was a welcomed improvement. The current format is continuous go-go dancing in black bikinis. There are no shows in Rainbow 1 Go-Go Bar. However, quite a few people would dispute the fact that having so many HOT go-go dancers, is a great show itself. Rainbow 1 is quite a small go-go bar when you compare it to some bars like Rainbow 4. However, the Dave The Rave Q Factor, or “a quantity of quality” is very high. Local beers and spirits were raised this high season to 135 Baht, but the barfine remains the standard 600 baht.

WHAT’S HOT - There are so many attractive go-go dancers in Rainbow 1 that it puts most rival go-go bars to shame. It is worth visiting just for the awesome eye candy! Interestingly, Rainbow 1 only charges 110 baht for lady drinks.

WHAT’S NOT - It does get very crowded and with it partly being a ‘Jap Trap’ there is the over-generous Japanese clientele to contend with. Some of the go-go dancers prefer to entertain Japanese customers and their prices reflect that. Remember Dave The Rave’s “Famous Fours Factor” - Four inch dick, Four minutes sex, Four thousand baht!

BUTT OUT BUDDY! Rainbow 1 have introduced a strict “NO SMOKING” policy, which will make a HUGE difference to everybodies health. It is much more comfortable now that the Japs are not blowing up a storm. Well done Rainbow!

(UPDATE JANUARY 2010) - Still going strong and continuing to draw the crowds in January 2009. Standard beers and spirits now cost 135 baht. Although somewhat labelled as a “Jap Trap” Rainbow 1 is well worth a visit. Rainbow 1 took on a bunch of go-go dancers from Hollywood Carousel. Currently, there are not too many Japanese customers around.

(UPDATE MARCH 2010) - The Japanese have returned to Thailand over the last couple of months, but not as many as previously. Japan is also feeling the credit crunch! Rainbow 1 still has a strong line-up of attractive go-go dancers. Without a doubt one of the very best line-ups of attractive Thai girls in Nana Plaza, but like most go-go bars, Rainbow 1 is a bit quieter than before.

Rainbow 2 Go-Go Bar - (Updated - January 2010)

When entering Nana Plaza, you will find Rainbow 2 Go-Go Bar in the far right corner. Rainbow 2 sits in-between Obsession Go-Go Bar on the left and Hollywood Rock Go-Go Bar on the right. Rainbow 2 Go-Go Bar was the first offspring of the four Rainbow sisters. It is a medium sized go-go bar, which is mostly populated by a Japanese clientele. Westerners should be aware of this fact, because many Rainbow 2 go-go dancers prefer Japanese men.

BUTT OUT BUDDY! Rainbow 2 have introduced a strict “NO SMOKING” policy, which will make a HUGE difference to everybodies health. It is much more comfortable now that the Japs are not blowing up a storm. Well done Rainbow!

(UPDATE - JANUARY 2010) - A distinct lack of Japanese customers and fewer go-go dancers is very evident. Rainbow 1 and Rainbow 4 remain more popular, but Rainbow 2 still ticks over a fair trade.

Red Lips Bar - (Update - January 2010)

A small, unassuming bar on the left-hand side as you enter Nana Plaza. Red Lips Bar is situated in-between Lollipop Go-Go Bar and Pretty Lady Go-Go Bar. This bar is such a nonentity that many people do not know it exists. Red Lips operates as a go-go bar. It is not on my list of recommended go-go bars.

(UPDATE - JANUARY 2010) - Red Lips is undergoing renovations with Pretty Lady Go-Go Bar. It is a joint venture. An interesting feature inside Red Lips are windows, through which you can peer into Pretty Lady.

Road House Bar

Tucked directly behind Pharaohs Bar, you will spot a small beer bar called Road House. This is another one of Crown Groups bars.

Spirit House Bar

Spirit House Bar is located next to the escalator on the right-hand side as you enter Nana Plaza. Right next door to Spirit House is Rainbow 1 Go-Go Bar. Therefore, this tiny beer bar is quite invisible, because the majority of customers walk straight passed and into Rainbow 1 Go-Go Bar.

Voodoo Go-Go Bar - (Update - January 2010)

Once upon a time Voodoo Go-Go Bar was a very popular place. Although Voodoo is a large go-go bar, it used to draw large crowds of revellers. In fact, Voodoo ranked alongside the very best go-go bars in Bangkok at one time. Alas, those good old days were years ago.

(UPDATE - JANUARY 2010) - Voodoo has undergone a serious renovation job. This large go-go bar now sports a pit filled with water and balloons. Apparently, the word on the go-go street is that foxy boxing and mud wrestling are to be introduced. Voodoo has made the effort to renovate and introduce some new concepts. I’m not sure how popular their latest concept will be, but you can’t knock them for trying.

(Update - January 2010) - I recently visited Voodoo and the place was empty. The pit is filled with water, which has a temperature control to keep it warm. Balloons fill the surface and a large padded beam runs across the top. From 10:00pm bouts of bargirl boxing used to be the main event. Currently Voodoo has a very average line-up of go-go dancers. Standard drinks are 135 baht. Although previously promoted by the owners of Voodoo, there is NO mud wrestling.

NANA PLAZA GO-GO BARS (MIDDLE LEVEL)

ANGELWITCH GO-GO BAR

The co-owners of Angelwitch are the pioneers of the most professionally choreographed stage shows in Thailand. Internet columnist ‘Baron Bonk’ rates Angelwitches shows equally as good as Crazy Horse in Paris. As proof of the popularity Angelwitch Go-Go Bar was voted ‘Best Go-Go Bar In Bangkok’ for 3 consecutive years. In addition, Angelwitch attracts a good crowd at Showtime and has done for over 6 years. This is one go-go bar that remains consistently busy all year round. It is quite simply a go-go bar for all seasons. During the last couple of months Angelwitch has taken on some new go-go dancers.  Also, there are some new faces among the Showgirls, which will help to embellish the stage shows. Currenly Showtime starts at 10:15pm and runs for at least 3 hours nightly.

(UPDATE MARCH 2010) - Despite a poor high season in Thailand, Angelwitch Go-Go Bar remains popular at Showtime (10:15pm until late). Angelwitch has taken on a considerable amount of “farm fresh” go-go dancers. The dance format is mono bikinis. Nowadays, there is certainly more to see in Angelwitch. Some more new shows have appeared amid the “Bangkok Broadway” repertoire.

(UPDATE MARCH 2010) - Several new faces have refreshed the line-up of the Angelwitch Showgirls. A number of resident Showgirls are present every week. May has stopped working, but several new faces are refreshing replacements. After Dark Asia 2010 Calendar model Vun is now part of the Angelwitch Show Team.

Big Mango Bar - (Update - January 2010)

Closed in October 2007 due to extortionately high rent demands by the lease landlord. However, the Big Mango Bar has since relocated further down Soi Nana. The new Big Mango Bar reopened on June 1st, 2008.

NEW LOCATION - Go down Soi Nana until you reach the 7 ELEVEN next to the Rajah Hotel car park. Cross the road and walk down the alleyway between Jools Bar and The Tavern. A few yards down on the left-hand side you will see the Big Mango Bar’s neon sign.

(UPDATE - JUNE 2009) - The old Big Mango site has been developed into Hollywood Inn Hotel. This is a very ambitious project, which comprises of a bar, reception area, plus very plush short rooms on several levels.

(UPDATE JUNE 2009) - Hollywood Inn is indeed now open.  Rooms are very stylishly furbished with flat TV screens and en suite bathrooms in each unit.  The cost for short stay is 400 baht.  All night stay is reasonable at around 1,000 baht.

Casanova Go-Go Bar - (Updated January 2010)

This is a classic “Dude looks like a lady” go-go bar. There are some of the tallest katoeys in Bangkok in this small go-go bar. Be aware that whatever your mates tell you, they are ALL lady-boys, and bloody big buggers they are too!

LADY-BOY ALERT (JANUARY 2010)

The katoeys in Casanova can be very aggressive. Be warned!

Cathouse Bar - (Update - January 2010)

Cathouse is a small bar that is located next to Rainbow 3 Go-Go Bar. Cathouse Bar is the first bar on the left-hand side on the concrete stairway. Currently co-owned by Willem and his Thai wife Tawan. It is known for its inexpensive drink prices.

HAPPY HOUR - Draught Singha Beer and Chang Beer is available all day. Buy one and get one free for 99 Baht. Cathouse serve a decent half pint chilled glass. Enjoy!

(Update - January 2010) - Heineken Draught Beer is now available. Buy one Heineken Draught for 99 baht and get one FREE. To my knowledge this is the best drinks deal for draught beer in the whole area. Cheers for the beers!

(UPDATE JANUARY 2010) - All bottled beers are now 69 baht.

DC-10 Go-Go Bar

This is a tiny Thai owned go-go bar that sits in-between Sexy Night Go-Go Bar and Casanova Go-Go Bar. DC-10 Go-Go Bar is not known for attractive go-go dancers, but the DC-10 DJ plays some classic Western music. Now under new ownership by the Erotica Group.

Erotica Pool House - (Update - January 2010)

Formerly Mercury Go-Go Bar, this quiet go-go bar was sold to the owners of Erotica Go-Go Bar. The new owners have renovated it and turned it into Erotica Pool House. Hooray! Just what Bangkok needs, yet another pool bar!

(UPDATE - JANUARY 2010) - The relatively new Erotica Pool House never seems to attract many customers. I was disappointed to see Mercury Go-Go Bar go, because the open-plan design at eye level was appealing. Before it was sold, Mercury was worth visiting.

(UPDATE - JANUARY 2010) - Mercury Go-Go Bar has relocated to the other side of Nana Plaza. At the top of the escalator it is the first go-go bar on the right-hand side. The new Mercury is next to Mandarin Table Dance. Although tiny, this go-go bar has some lovely go-go girls. Note that Heineken, Singha, Chang and Thai whisky is just 90 baht all night long. Check it out!

Fantasia Go-Go Bar - (Update - January 2010)

Located next to Temptations Go-Go Bar on the right-hand side on the middle level. Again, yet another go-go bar ran by the Crown Group. Even though Samit (former Hollywood doorman) tries his best to intice guys into Fantasia, but most just walk straight past him. It’s amazing that old granite voice still keeps going after all these years!

G-SPOT GO-GO BAR

Situated next to Rainbow 4 Go-Go Bar in the right-hand corner is G-Spot Go-Go Bar. G-Spot has always been considered the flagship of the Crown Group. It is a large go-go bar that has had a loyal following for many years. At one time, it was said to have the best shower show in Thailand. Alas, there are no more shows in G-Spot. Operates to a standard go-go dance format. Sadly now a shadow of its former glory.

(UPDATE MARCH 2010) - Be aware that lady boys are mixed in among the go-go dancers. Be careful, because your go-go girl might not be a girl!

MANDARIN GO-GO BAR

Located directly ahead of you, as you step off the escalator. Mandarin Go-Go Bar has ownership connections with Mandarin Table Dance and Shark Go-Go Bar in Soi Cowboy. Although Mandarin is a small go-go bar, it is split into two levels. Mandarin stopped its popular Happy Hour, but it still has some lovely go-go dancers. The go-go girls in Mandarin tend to be more attractive and farang friendly than most of the go-go bars in Nana Plaza. Check it out!

(UPDATE MARCH 2010) - The top level of Mandarin is operational, when Mandarin has enough go-go girls. They do have a good line-up of enthusiastic young dolly birds. Well worth checking out, especially when the top level is open. Currently has a very good line-up of sexy hot babes. Well worth a visit!

MANDARIN TABLE DANCE GO-GO BAR

Mandarin Table Dance is under the same ownership as Mandarin Go-Go Bar and Shark Go-Go Bar in Soi Cowboy. With the table dance format this little go-go bar does make a bit of a change to the norm. On a good night Mandarin Table Dance can be a fun place with lively dolly birds doing the tabletop bop!

MERCURY GO-GO BAR

Until it was sold last year, Mercury used to be situated on the left-hand side of the middle level. This has since become Erotica Pool House. I liked the layout of the old Mercury and much prefered it to the tiny new go-go bar that it has become now. The owners of Mercury Go-Go Bar have relocated it next to Mandarin Table Dance. The new Mercury is a very small go-go bar with a tiny go-go stage in the middle. Not many go-go dancers but there are some cuties among them.

(UPDATE MARCH 2010) - There are a collection of very farang friendly young dolly birds to be found here.

RAINBOW 3 GO-GO BAR

Rainbow 3 Go-Go Bar is located next to Cathouse Bar on the left-hand side as you walk to the top of the concrete staircase. Rainbow 3 is the smallest of the four Rainbow Go-Go Bars.

(UPDATE - NOVEMBER 2009) - Rainbow 3 has recently acquired some lovely dolly birds. You will be pleased to know that some of the go-go dancers are farang friendly.

(UPDATE MARCH 2010) - Lost about 10 of the best go-go dancers to go-go bars in Soi Cowboy. Rainbow 3 needs a revival, as it is quiet on a nightly basis. But, in saying that there a few very attractive go-go dancers to be found here.

RAINBOW 4 GO-GO BAR

The mighty Rainbow 4 Go-Go Bar is located in the far right corner on the middle level in Nana Plaza. Rainbow 4 is situated in-between G Spot Go-Go Bar and Temptations Go-Go Bar. Following a buy out, Rainbow 4 took over the space occupied by Woodstock Bar & Restaurant, and Rosemarie Bar. Therefore, this is a BIG go-go bar. Inside there are two go-go stages, which house the largest number of go-go dancers inside four walls in the whole of Thailand. In terms of the Dave The Rave Q Factor (a quantity of quality), Rainbow 4 Go-Go Bar is a “must see” whenever you explore Bangkok’s naughty nightlife. It is the ultimate “analysis paralysis” go-go bar experience! Rainbow 4 Go-Go Bar is deemed by many, as the best go-go bar in Thailand. In terms of eye candy, Rainbow 4 is truly awesome!

WHAT’S HOT - What could not be HOT about two go-go stages packed with dancing dolls? At its peak, Rainbow 4 has to have no less than FOUR shifts of go-go girls. This is incredible in itself, when you consider that most go-go bars have only two shifts of go-go dancers. The sheer amount of eye candy on display makes it a most impressive pleasure palace. Many guys consider rainbow 4, as more “farang friendly” than the other three Rainbow Go-Go Bars. Many of the go-go dancers will go with Westerners and another positive is that they play rock music.

WHAT’S NOT - The design layout looks like a blind man created it. Unfortunately, there is nowhere to view both go-go stages fully. You can sit in the isle between the two go-go stages and turn your head from side to side as if you are at a tennis match. Or, you can pay your bar bill and move around the bar with drink in hand.

(UPDATE MARCH 2010) - Still going strong with a lot of go-go dancers on the books. Although there are less Japanese customers, Rainbow 4 is also  popular with Westerners. Some of the go-go girls wear full bikinis, others wear mono bikinis, and a few are in their birthday suits.

SEXY NIGHT GO-GO BAR

This very small, but lively go-go bar sits in-between Angelwitch Go-Go Bar (left) and DC-10 Go-Go Bar (right). The DJ plays some excellent music. A real treat if you like classic tracks from previous decades. Sexy Night tends to resemble a single mothers club, but the go-go dancers are very farang friendly. Ocassionally has a few very attractive go-go girls, but it is very hit or miss.

SPANKYS GO-GO BAR

Spankys Go-Go Bar is situated on the left-hand side next to Angelwitch Go-Go Bar. A go-go bar owner who has several go-go bars in Soi Cowboy, decided to remodel Spankys into a state-of-the-art medium sized go-go bar. It has to be said that Spankys is a beautiful go-go bar, but it rarely attracts many customers. Spankys Go-Go Bar shares ownership with Midnite, Our Place, Spice Girls, Black & White and Deja Vu in Soi Cowboy.

(UPDATE MARCH 2010) - An ambitious American has bought Spankys and he has turned it completely around. The format is fun and Spanky’s has shows from 10:00pm onwards. Refurbished with comfortable sofa seats and a purpose-built shower unit.

VILLA BAR (FORMERLY FARANG CONNECTION)

Formerly Farang Connection and Hungry Restaurant, the owners have remodelled it into a bar. Very cheap drink prices make Villa Bar worth visiting for those on a booze cruise. A couple of cute service girls are an added attraction. Check it out!

(UPDATE MARCH 2010) - All standard drinks here are still under 100 baht, but there are not many girls here.

NANA PLAZA GO-GO BARS (TOP LEVEL)

CARNIVAL GO-GO BAR

Carnival Go-Go Bar is located on the right-hand side next to Cascade Go-Go Bar. Carnival is a large go-go bar that features a double carousel go-go stage. One other special feature is a mechanical bull, which has proved to be popular with gangs of tourists.

(UPDATE MARCH 2010) - The Crown Group has changed Carnival into a lady boy bar. This is now the fifth lady boy bar in Nana Plaza. Is there such a demand for chicks with dicks?

CASCADE GO-GO BAR

Cascade is yep, you guessed it, yet another katoey or lady boy go-go bar. Cascade is located on the left-hand side of Carnival Go-Go Bar. Along with Carnival it is owned by the Crown Group.

EROTICA GO-GO BAR

Erotica Go-Go Bar is located on the left-hand side of the stairs that lead onto the top floor. Erotica Go-Go Bar has two levels and also “bonking booths,” or short time rooms as they are commonly called. Recently Erotica has taken on some very polite and efficient service girls from Mandarin Go-Go Bar. Other girls including some go-go dancers from Mandarin have also joined Erotica. Currently, Erotica has a replenished line-up and there are a few very attractive dolly birds to be found. Erotica still run a Happy Hour up until 9:00pm, where standard drinks are only 80 Baht. Erotica appear to be operating on one level, which does help to enhance the atmosphere. If a go-go bar is struggling to operate on two levels, because of a shortage of go-go dancers, it makes sense to combine the girls onto one stage.

(UPDATE MARCH 2010) - Beware of expensive lady drinks. A special lady drink will cost you 220 baht. This is the most expensive lady drink in any go-go bar in Bangkok.

HOLLYWOOD CAROUSEL GO-GO BAR

On the top level of Nana Plaza, Hollywood Carousel Go-Go Bar is the first go-go bar on the left-hand side. At one time, it was thought by many people to be the most popular go-go bar in Bangkok. Hollywood Carousel still has the two rotating go-go stages. Under new ownership it was partially renovated. An unusual design feature is a cage above the bar counter, which sometimes houses coyote style dancers. The management have stopped the Happy Hour. Raunchy shows still feature later in the evening.

(UPDATE JANUARY 2010) - Attracting a reasonable crowd on certain nights. The dress code is birthday suits for feature dancers. Still has some trademark sexy shows. Stays open after 2:00am on most nights.  Check it out!

(UPDATE MARCH 2010) - I visited recently and Hollywood Carousel is still ’showing.’ These days Hollywood Carousel is usually busy, especially at weekends. Showtime now starts at 9:00pm. Don’t be shy give it a try!

HOLLYWOOD STRIP GO-GO BAR

Hollywood Strip Go-Go Bar is the smaller of the two Hollywood Go-Go Bars that lives in the shadow of her big sister. Under new ownership Hollywood Strip was given a complete remodel. It is now completely white inside.

(UPDATE MARCH 2010) - Closed its doors over a year ago. However, the owner tells me that he has plans to reopen with a fresh format. The remodelled Hollywood Strip Go-Go Bar is due to open about May with a new name and a new theme.
