LOY KRATHONG – FLOAT YOUR BOAT
Any visitor to Thailand will soon realise how beautiful many Thai women are. But, they are even more beautiful on November 12th. Today is Loy Krathong, known in English as the “festival of lights.” This traditional Thai festival celebrates the end of the monsoon season. Loy Krathong is celebrated annually to honour the “water spirits” and therefore, to show appreciation to Mae Khong Kha, the “Goddess Of Water.” In order to demonstrate proper respect, one should dress to impress for the occasion. Thai women wear decorative silk dresses and many style their hair beautifully with orchids. It is one of Thailand’s most beautiful and romantic celebrations. The romantic part is when lovers accompany each other in order to float their boat. During a brief prayer the Thai women will say, “Kor Kamar Mae Khong Kha.” This is to honour the Goddess Of Water, and to ask forgiveness for any wrongdoing to the water spirits. I find it fascinating, when we delve into the traditions behind these Thai festivals. (more…)

SAWATDEE KRUNGTHEP – HELLO BANGKOK
The bald eagle has landed! Dave The Rave has returned from his reality check to Farangland. So, how was the trip? Did I land in London with a resounding bump? The answer is a definite YES! I dislike the whole chaos of mega busy airports like Heathrow. Although it was my annual family visit, I am pleased to be back in Bangkok. As my luck would have it, this summer was the worst on record. (As most of you know, Britain ranks highly, as having the most miserable weather in the whole of the western world). In reality, the winters are getting longer and the summers are shorter. I have to admit that the catastrophic climate is a depressing characteristic of my motherland. The icy winds and driving rain does nothing to inspire the people. During the holiday, some days the weather was quite reasonable in the daytime, but cold, wet and windy from early evening onwards. We are talking about August here, so I dread to think what the winter months will be like in England. Fortunately, I don’t have to suffer the harsh winter in Farangland. This is one of the best things about living in Thailand. We enjoy a 12-month long summer, which is briefly interrupted by the rainy season. Even the so-called Thai winter (akaat yen), is similar to a fine summer in Farangland. Originating from Antarctic conditions, I always appreciate Thailand’s wonderful weather. (more…)

NIGHTSEEING IN NANA
Recently I have visited Finnegan’s Irish Pub down in Soi Nana. This past week Finnegan’s has done a brisk trade, while other pubs in the vicinity remain quiet. Admittedly, it is a small pub, but they have built up a good crowd of regulars. Although Finnegan’s attracts a healthy following, I think it is underrated in some ways. The excellent food alone should be a BIG draw. Check out the excellent menu, I think you will be impressed. Please say hello to Gerry, the friendly Irish owner. Cheers! (more…)

AFTER DARK ASIA – VOLUME 7
The next edition of the go-go girly magazine After Dark Asia will be on sale soon. The initial launch date was set for August 8th. However, the publisher’s estimation was a little premature. Thailand’s top glossy girly magazine will be on the shelves around the middle of this month. One of the partners is an image artist and the other is more of a piss artist! (I just couldn’t resist having a joke about good ole Bob). The photographer formerly worked for Penthouse Magazine, which explains the superb quality of the photos. This cover shot is one of the best I’ve seen. It is an excellent photo and the dolly birds are sensationally sensual. Copies are available from newsstands in Bangkok, but After Dark Asia is much more widely available across Pattaya. Check it out! (more…)

A GO-GO BAR FOR ALL SEASONS
Opening a successful go-go bar is a lot harder than it looks. Prior to establishing a successful go-go bar, there are inevitably some important factors to consider. Today, we will look at two of the most important aspects. Firstly, acquiring the right location is the first priority. The three L’s of marketing are; location, location, location. As long as you are in the heart of the action, people can find easily you. I always sigh with disappointment, when a go-go bar name card has a detailed map on the back. We don’t want to waste time doing a map orientation exercise! After establishing a prime location, probably the next consideration is the size and design. You might be surprised how many people overlook these things. I dare say some naïve newcomers think that they just have to open the doors and the customers will arrive in droves. It is not that simple, as any go-go bar boss will tell you. Great care and consideration should be taken in deciding on the size of the go-go bar. If it is too tiny, you will never be driving around in a brand new Mercedes Benz in this lifetime! You just cannot generate enough profit to lead that kind of lifestyle. Besides that who enjoys being boxed in? Those poky places are only fun for those who like the hands-on approach. (Call me old fashioned, but I thought hanky-panky was for the privacy of the hotel room). I find that most Westerners like to have their own personal space. Lord forbid if anyone invades that personal space. Small bars usually make small profits. (more…)

LOW SEASON HIGH TREASON
The frugal folks among us sometimes misinterpret the low season with regards to Thailand’s nightlife scene. They automatically think that the low season is time to come out of social hibernation. With a sigh of relief they will say, “At long last the tourist season is over.” Meanwhile, us party animals enjoy Thailand’s vast nightlife scene all year round. We are so pleased to merrily party 12 months of the year. But alas, the frustratingly frugal folk think that low season becomes their territory. This can and often does backfire on them. Are you sitting comfortably? Then let’s begin… (more…)

HOW LOW CAN IT GO!
Many a bar boss in Thailand is singing the low season blues this June. Similar to a scary rollercoaster ride, bar trade suddenly took a steep drop. There are several factors contributing to this quiet period. In fact, some people are labelling it, “The lowest of low seasons.” Firstly, many people outside of the bar business in Thailand, are unaware that June ranks as one the worst months of the whole year. As per usual, the low season arrives promptly every year. It’s not called “low season” for nothing folks! Secondly, we have had some very heavy rain. In Bangkok on Monday and Tuesday, the rain came hammering down for several hours. It’s a fact that some bargirls are not easy to motivate at the best of times. Give them an excuse like heavy rain, and they won’t bother to leave their apartments. However, this time around it was a valid excuse, because the rain was so heavy. The sky wept intensely and those residing in remote areas were literally left stranded. The timing of the rain was not at all favourable. Well blow me! Just as I’m writing this, silvery bullets hammer onto the ground. Bangkok suffers torrential rainfall for a second consecutive day. A loud clap of thunder from an angry sky makes my dog jump. Parts of Bangkok are now flooded by several inches… (more…)

GETTING MARRIED TO A THAI
There are some decisions in life that require serious consideration. One such decision is whether to get married. If we make the wrong decision, it can cause us extreme emotional and financial suffering. This suffering might last for many years to come. By taking a closer look at this subject, we can all remind ourselves how important the commitment of marriage really is. It would be very foolish not to take marriage seriously. Despite the fact that it has almost become a trend to get divorced, marriage is about entering a partnership with the person you love and care for. The vows that one recites, emphasise a special commitment to a loved one, who is to become (theoretically speaking) our life partner. It is a sad fact that in Farangland most marriages fail. This is so often such a worrying problem, because children are caught up in the crossfire. In some extreme cases, the children are used as ammunition to win divorce cases. This is nothing short of sick, but in this era of dog-eat-dog, it is often a matter of “win at all costs.” These are the facts of the matter, which is a sad reflection of today’s society. (more…)

THAILAND’S CLIMATIC CHANGE AND ITS EFFECTS
Regarding the weather, there appears to be some serious climatic changes going on around the world. Initially, I used to class the three traditional Thai seasons alongside the tourist seasons. The ideal time to visit Thailand remains the cool season (akaat yen), which usually starts in November and goes through to the end of February. The vast majority of foreign visitors flood Thailand during this period. But, shortly after the flood of visitors, the drought begins. In March, the hot season (akaat rorn) commences and can last into June. Then there is an inconsistent period, where the seasons transcend from hot and dry to wet and humid. The rainy season (akaat fun) normally starts some time in June or July and lasts until the end of October. The transition from the hot season to the rainy season can cause quite a few locals to fall ill. Also, the temperature change from the rainy season into the cool season sees many natives nursing coughs, colds and fevers. After all these years living in Thailand, I now suffer the climate change almost as much as the Thai people do. (more…)

There is exciting news for sports fans, because Stephen Hendry will be in Thailand from Monday, May 19th until Friday, May 23rd. The record-breaking, seven-time World Snooker Champion will arrive as a guest of John Smith’s Bitter and Strongbow Cider. The “Flying Scotsman” will make a series of one-hour appearances, in what will be a whistle-stop tour of selected venues in Bangkok, Koh Samui and Pattaya. The Stephen Hendry Roadshow is sponsored by Scottish & Newcastle Brewery and is hosted in association with
Fluid Asia Pacific. Stephen will be making himself available for a questions and answers session at each pub. Stephen will also play some exhibition frames, so this could be your chance to play against a living legend. During the time available at each pub, he will try to meet everyone and have a chat. Welcome To Thailander Webzine!
Who is a Thailander? A Thailander is very simply any person who likes Thailand. I coined the expression in order that we can feel we are all part of a very special group of people. And, we are special people! Don’t worry, because if you like Thailand you are automatically a Thailander. This newly launched “Thailander Webzine” will be posted in addition to my Wednesday weekly editions of Thailand Night Fever.
(The photo of Wat Arun was taken by Annie).
Welcome fellow Thailander!

How Big Is Thailand?
Thailand has a land area of 513,115 square kilometres. Thailand is approximately the same size as France, but it’s a lot more fun!

Mexican Fiesta At Sunrise Tacos
Cinco De Mayo, or the Fifth Of May, is a day that is celebrated all over the world. In Mexico, or wherever the culture of Mexico is celebrated, families, friends and neighbours gather to have a fiesta in honour of the event. This festival observes the 1862 victory of 4,000 ill-equipped Mexicans over 8,000 well-equipped French invaders! The battle known as the battle of Puebla took place on (you guessed it) May 5th. Today, all is forgiven, with fiestas planned in Mexico and in many communities around the world. Gringos who have little idea why they are coming to a Cinco De Mayo celebration are happy to celebrate the day and join in the fun and parties on May 5th.
Cinco De Mayo is this Monday and Sunrise Tacos is ready to give their guests a fiesta of their own! Festivities will include a giant frozen margarita with flavours of Lime, Mango and Fresh Strawberry. You also will get to keep the giant souvenir glass! This Margarita by-the-yard (800 ml or 27 ounce) glass comes with three shots of tequila and one shot of triple sec, along with the freshly squeezed juice for only 199 Baht + Vat. (50% off the price at Sukhumvit Soi 12). This offer is valid on Monday, May 5th at the Sukhumvit Soi 12 and Siam Paragon branches. Cheers!
To celebrate this fun holiday and all the tasty meals that go with it, for every 500 Baht your party spends on food at Sunrise Tacos that day, you will get one FREE “I Love Tacos” or “I Love Burritos” shirt (valued at 250 Baht). This offer is valid for the Emporium, Siam Paragon and Sukhumvit Soi 12 locations, and is valid on Monday when you call for delivery at 02-229-4851 or order online at - http://www.chefsxp.com/home.php?manufacturers_id=98.
You will be pleased to know that the restaurant, delivery service and takeaway service is 24 hours a day.
Mexican food is a huge part of celebrating Cinco De Mayo, so be sure to celebrate it at Sunrise Tacos, for one of the biggest fiestas of the year.

Pattaya Bars Are Closed Tomorrow
Sorry to have to tell you this news, but the bars in Pattaya are CLOSED tomorrow. Unfortunately, Saturday, May 3rd coincides with the local elections in Pattaya. I want you guys to be aware of this, so that you can plan accordingly. Also, you need to know that this only affects the Pattaya nightspots. The rest of Thailand’s nightspots remain unaffected on May 3rd.
The decision to close the bars in Thailand, because of the local elections is a strange one to say the very least. However, fighting it is futile and furthermore, trying to understand it is impossible! We can’t do anything about it, so we might as well learn to live with it.
Late Closing Hours Reinstated In Pattaya
The good news for Pattaya is that the authorities have reinstated the late closing hours. Once again, the Pattaya go-go bars can stay open until at least 3:00am and some of the discos and clubs are open until cockcrow.
The situation in Bangkok is also changing. A nightclub owner told me that his club can now stay open until 2:00am. They were being closed at midnight. I dare say that nightclubs across Thailand have lost a lot of money.
HOORAY! Bangkok nightspots including Nana Plaza can now stay open until at least 2:00am. About time too!

Dave The Rave’s Birthday Bash
I have to say that my birthday bash on Wednesday, April 30th was very enjoyable this year. I was given a lovely birthday cake from Angelwitch Go-Go Bar (coffee flavour), plus a bottle of JW Black Label, a bottle of tequila, plus a special present from Matt and Pim, the co-owners of Angelwitch. My friends surprised me with presents, which included a super Manchester United T-shirt from Leigh. I was also given a special bottle of Crown Royal whisky from Mr Ed my webmaster. There were lots of drinks and not forgetting plenty of hugs and kisses from the girls in Angelwitch. Considering it is low season, I was very grateful that so many guys made a special visit to Angelwitch for my birthday. In addition, my phone was full of SMS messages and I have a backlog of emails to work through. I was touched by your kindness. This was one of the best birthdays I have ever had. I wish to thank you all for making my 45th birthday so special. Cheers!

Welcome to the Thai New Year 2551 and let’s all hope it is a good year for Thailand. Another Songkran has come and gone for most of us, but don’t forget that Pattaya will continue the water warfare until this weekend. I have to say that I thought the Songkran Festival was a bit quiet overall this year. If you question what I mean by that, then just ask a bar owner. The go-go bars in Bangkok had fewer go-go dancers, due to many bar girls deciding to go home this Songkran. Some go-go bars cut their girls as much as 2,000 Baht per day. This is a very severe cut for not working during Songkran. However, this can be counterproductive to the bar, because some bar girls will stop work for the rest of April. If a bargirl is cut 6,000 Baht that is over 50% of a go-go dancers salary. Of course, many Thais are on much lower salaries than go-go dancers are. Most service girls don’t earn 6,000 Baht. Therefore, a bargirl might well think; why should I work for nothing? I would hazard a guess that in most go-go bars in Bangkok, the takings were down on last year. Also, I couldn’t help but notice that fewer bargirls got into the spirit of things. (more…)

Sawatdee Pee Mai Kap! Or in English, Happy Thai New Year! For those of you who are in Thailand, I sincerely hope that you are having a happy and a safe Songkran. I say “safe” because every year hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries are reported. WATER WARFARE WARNING – Ensure that you are extra careful on the roads during the Songkran water festival. Most of Thailand celebrate Songkran from April 13th – 15th, but in Pattaya it started yesterday and it will continue until next weekend. I thought that I had better post this as a reminder. So guys, be aware that the Pattaya “water war” will last until April 20th. This year a lot of bargirls have gone home, leaving most go-go bars with fewer go-go dancers. Even though it is Thai New Year, the closing times in Bangkok remain between 1:00am and 2:00am. Down in Pattaya most of the go-go bars, pubs and clubs are closing late again. Good news for the Pattaya party animals. Party on! The Thai authorities announced that LARGE water cannons would be outlawed. However, although the supermarkets listened, there are plenty of big water guns for sale on the street. You can put that down to the idiosyncrasy of “Amazing Thailand” I guess. I dared to venture out onto the streets of Bangkok this afternoon. And, as per usual, it’s wild ‘n’ crazy out there folks! When that ice water hits you and you get cologne powder in your eyes; now that’s a killer!

ANGELWITCH GO-GO BAR WILL BE CLOSED ON APRIL 15th
To show respect to the staff in Angelwitch Go-Go Bar, the management have decided to close Angelwitch on April 15th. It will just be for the one night to allow the Thai staff to enjoy Songkran. Please note that Angelwitch in Nana Plaza will be closed tomorrow, but Angelwitch in Pattaya will be open.
THAI SONGKRAN HISTORY AND TRADITION
The traditional Songkran water festival is a very elegant ceremony, which originated from ancient Siam. The official Thai New Year is celebrated from April 13th - 15th. Orchid flowers were placed into silver bowls containing special scented water. Younger members of Thai families would gently sprinkle the Songkran water over their elder relative’s hands. This special water was also gently poured onto the shoulder of an elder. Your own body had to be thoroughly cleaned, along with your house. You could call it “religious spring cleaning.” Songkran in Thailand is not just a tradition of external cleansing, but also personal cleansing of the mind and spirit. Buddha images are thoroughly washed and sprinkled with special scented water. Flower garlands are hung around the necks of the Buddha images. This is then followed by respectful prayers. Throughout Thailand’s multitude of “wats” (Thai temples), you can here the humming tones of Thai people reciting Pali. (Pali is the ancient scripture of Theravada Buddhism).
AFTER DARK ASIA MAGAZINE VOLUME 6
I have been informed that the newest edition of After Dark Asia magazine will be on sale just after Songkran. Look out for After Dark Asia volume 6 on the newsstands throughout Bangkok and Pattaya. After Dark Asia has established itself as Thailand’s top go-go girly magazine. The photography is excellent. A copy of After Dark Asia will set you back 150 Baht. Check out the HOT go-go girls!

DAVE’S NIGHTSEEING TOURS - SUNRISE TO SOI COWBOY

For some time now, my friend Nick has wanted to hit the town with me. Nick is currently based in Cambodia as a mine clearance specialist. Obviously, any day off from the minefields would be relaxing, but I wanted to introduce Nick to some places that he has not visited before. I took a night off from my duties in Angelwitch Go-Go Bar and I looked forward to the night ahead. I wasn’t feeling 100% but I was determined to meet Nick and spend some quality time with a good friend. Nick was about to experience one of my “nightseeing tours” and he seemed keen enough. We arranged to meet at Sunrise Tacos Mexican Grill, which is located in the Leader Price Complex. (For those not familiar with the Leader Price Complex, it is right next to Time Square Building between Sukhumvit, Soi 12 and Soi 14). Several months ago, the owners of Sunrise Tacos decided to take over a vacant space directly opposite their shop. At first, I was not sure what Greg Lange was intending to do with two Sunrise Tacos shops. Was Greg intending to open two branches of Sunrise Tacos in the same complex? This all became very clear when Greg explained the concept to me. The original Sunrise Tacos is a small place, and it now provides a 24 hour takeaway and delivery service. The new, larger premise has become a cosy restaurant that is stylishly designed and furbished. The credit for the interior design goes to Mrs Lange. Greg’s wife Nui has done a superb job! (more…)

SOI COWBOY – WALK ON THE WILD WEST SIDE (PART 2)
After a few minutes of deliberation, the first go-go bar that we visited was Shark Go-Go Bar. For such a good go-go bar, Shark was quiet, and this was a Friday night. One positive thing about Shark Bar is that the drink prices are very reasonable. Most of the regular house beers are 125 Baht, which is very good by today’s prices. Shark Bar never feature any shows, but some guys might argue that the dancing dolls on stage is a show in itself. I think that Shark has a high level of attractive go-go dancers, but this does come at some price. Most of the dolly birds know that they are HOT and they will play on this. The hot babes here will not always approach guys (especially strangers) and therefore, they can appear standoffish. Furthermore, effort on your part is necessary if you want to meet and get to know the go-go dancers. (more…)
