British Pound Bounces Back

Tuesday, September 19th, 2017

It’s been a good week for the British pound, as it surged against both the American dollar and the Euro.

In what can only be described as a sudden turnaround, the pound has made a surprise comeback. Last week the sterling rose to a one-year high of $1.327 against the American dollar.

Similar to a scene from a Rocky movie, the British sterling was “pounded” against the ropes, but has come out on top. The previous fear of Brexit sent the pound into a spiraling descent, with the Euro continuing to gain in strength for some time now.

The spike in the pound is largely due to the threat of the British Government being forced to raise interest rates. The reason is linked to a rise of inflation, as the decision looms in the British financial atmosphere.

Regarding a very strong Thai baht, there has been some national criticism of the Thai government. Some locals are saying it’s affecting the export market and also that Thailand is becoming a more expensive option.

However, there is more good news for Brits, as the pound has also risen against the Thai baht. A number of disgruntled Brits will say, “About bloody time” and they will no doubt expect more. But, the poor performance of the pound has really affected Brits abroad. Also, the staggering strength of the baht has dented the fixed income of expats, especially British pensioners living in Thailand.

Dare we say the pound is starting to look bullish?! Let’s hope the pound continues to rise to around 50 baht, where it will really start to gain attention.

Doing The Street Eat Beat!

Friday, September 8th, 2017

Do I have a food fetish? I am in a bit of a funny mood today. Is there something kind of kinky about street food in Thailand?

Now I know that is a strange question, but let me explain. A few moons ago, down on Sukhumvit Road, there is a gorgeous girl who makes delicious Fried Pork. But, sadly some guy has porked the pork girl and that’s the end of that fantasy!

The street food scene in Thailand is certainly something you would not see in the Western world. Back in Farangland, “Greasy Joe’s Fat Burger” is not what I call street food at all.

I love the simplicity of Thai street food; it’s quick, cheap and tasty. We must remember that grilling meat is so much healthier than deep frying it to death!

Whenever you have the munchies, you can grab a few of those Barbecue Chicken Sticks at the silly cost of 10 baht each. Just wait a few minutes and you are good to go with your healthy fast food. It’s ideal when you are on the move. You can eat them right there on the street, while you travel, or save them to eat in your room. The Thais do it all the time. You know, when in Rome and all that jazz!

As for the operators themselves, Thai street stalls are practical, cost-effective and in some cases, it’s a very profitable little business. Once they acquire a street space, for relatively little cost “Bee’s Barbecue” can be up and running in no time.

I admire how innovative the Thais can be. An old oil barrel is sliced in half and made into a barbecue stand. Have you seen those big clay pots? They are filled with charcoal and a steel grill is placed over the top. It’s a simple idea and yet so practical. The street food carts bearing anything from Som Tam (Spicy Papaya Salad) to fresh fruit bring a new meaning to “meals-on-wheels.”

Your grub is cooked in no time and it’s very delicious. So many Thais prefer street food to fancy restaurants. They tell me it just does not taste the same.

Daves Raves – At times I think the Western world could learn a lot from practical, cost-effective concepts we see in Thailand. Sometimes less is more and simplicity is the key to success and satisfaction.

Khaosan Road Clear The Sidewalks

Tuesday, September 5th, 2017

TRENDY TOURIST AREA KHAOSAN ROAD BANGKOK

Street vendors operating in Khao San Road have been instructed to clear the sidewalks down this popular and trendy tourist area.

This is following a recent meeting with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA). The street vendors were told to move their stalls from the sidewalk onto the road for a period of one week. The trial commences on September 12th.

The concept is proposed to satisfy everybody and BMA District Chef Wutichai Bunyasit said, “We want to return all footpaths to the people.”

Daves Raves – I think this is a sensible solution, so let’s hope it happens.

Never Hurry A Curry!

Monday, September 4th, 2017

Kiwi Pub Curry & Pint Night

When I lived in England, I have had my fair share of curry nights I call tell you. In fact, Indian Curry is now Britain’s most popular food. It beats Fish & Chips, Roast Dinners and Chinese Takeaway hands down.

I remember an Indian chef explaining to me the art of making a great curry. He said with a wry smile, “Never hurry a curry!” Well that just cracked me up!

The Kiwi Sports Bar & Grill hosts “Monday Curry Night” with a choice of Chicken, or Beef Jalfrezi, Rogan Josh, or Tikka Masala. It comes with Steamed Rice, Garlic Pita Bread, and a choice of a Heineken Pint, or a Tiger Pint. You get all that for just 279฿

Stickmania (April 13th 2007)

Monday, September 4th, 2017

Written By Dave The Rave

Throughout the infinite realms of time and cyberspace there lurks an extremely powerful amorphous creature that is an almighty force to be reckoned with. This infinite amorphous creature that engulfs many of our lives is the limitless universe of the internet. Although no one person actually owns the internet, Bill Gates has given it a damned good try – bless him! Without any doubt whatsoever the internet has transformed and revolutionized how freely and effectively information is communicated today. Like a giant pouncing tiger the web world leapt into the millennium and multitudes of websites have emerged as a result. Therefore, this transformation has provided us with enormous information resources and that means massive amounts of information about Thailand. In the 1980’s when I first visited Thailand, there was no such online information because of course it did not exist. We simply followed the recommendations of a friend and perhaps read the odd travel guide. How things change hey? Nowadays every budding blogger has jumped on the bandwagon – whether we really want to know about Bill’s fanatical train-spotting, or Mary’s bone-crushing rock cakes! Totally captivating weblogs, or not as the case may be, it is all out there on the internet.

Whether you love or loathe webmaster columnists, there is one Thailand website that stands out predominantly. Crystal clearly Stickman’s website is the most popular of its genre. For many Thailand readers it is an essential information and news source that has its own dedicated cult following. Ever since I first encountered “Stickman’s Guide to Bangkok” I admit that I was hooked. I think that what makes this contagious creature tick is to do with the fact that the enigmatic Stickman is extremely engaging. Some guys have planned their entire Thailand trips and in some cases planned the BIG move from Farangland to Thailand, entirely from Stickman’s website. Without noticing it at first, slowly but surely Stickman draws you into his realm. “Welcome to my lair”, said the spider to the fly. It’s a scary thought isn’t it?

Personally, I for one remain both very pleased and so relieved to see the return of the main sections of Stickman’s website. What I do know is that I speak with great confidence, when I state that I am most certainly not the only person who shares these sentiments. The mighty army of Stickman fans (and a few foes too) were on the edge of their computer seats for four long months, as they were forced to await the outcome of let us say Stickman’s sojourn away from the cyber scene. Did Stickman’s cyberspacecraft come crashing down? No, it did not but the disruption caused by a certain “Stickman Stalker” just goes to prove what a powerful tool or weapon the internet really can be. Time is a great healer though and here we all are again. Although not quite back where we started, nonetheless we continue on our exciting journey through various time zones, and through the infinite realms of cyberspace. We have lift off… “Warp Factor II Captain Stickman!”

THE STRIP GOGO BAR PATPONG SOI 2

If we take a trip back in time a lot of readers would tune in to read Nite Owl, which used to be the ramblings of Bernard Trink. The old Nite Owl penned his weekly column for decades until he was finally axed by the powers that be at the Bangkok Post. Nite Owl had some fans but most people read Trink’s weekly solely in order to seek Thailand nightlife news. As a result of Nite Owl getting the chop there was a dark, void abyss, but then following that exit came the entrance of the modern day Thailand columnist – none other than Stickman. Incidentally, approaching six years ago saw the introduction of the enormously popular “Stickman Weekly” and this new weekly column took off like a cyberspace rocket.

OK, now fast forward to April 2007 and the “cyberspace chameleon” returns, but under another guise – Stick Mark II. Who is this mysterious Stick Mark II? Much speculation surrounds the identity of Stick Mark II, but you can be assured that Stickman will be watching like a hawk. Whether Stickman is editing it, writing it, or not writing it, he has returned and to me that is the main thing.

ANGELWITCH ROCK DANCERS NANA PLAZA

I will let you into a little secret that I persuaded Stickman that the Photo Gallery should be updated. The eagle-eyed among you Stickman fans will notice that a NEW Photo Gallery called “Thailand Characters Photo Gallery 2” has been added. In addition to this latest gallery full of terrific images, the entire Stickman Weekly archived columns for 2006 have returned. This means that avid readers can take a trip back in time to Stickmanland. It would appear that in observing my counterpart, I notice that Stick Mark II (whoever he/she is) has integrated images in with the text in his new weekly column. Stick Mark II’s very first column contained a lovely little travelogue about a sojourn to Isaan, that was complimented by some truly picturesque images. This gives a visual impression of an online magazine – may I say very well done!

On a personal note, as an ambitious newcomer to the web world I want everybody to know that Stickman has been very helpful, offering sound advice. My own website DaveTheRaveBangkok.com was launched in November 2006 and Stickman has been completely unselfish in offering me invaluable advice. Us online columnists/webmasters slave away to update our websites and I can tell you that it takes a HUGE amount of time and effort. As friends of mine have pointed out, we just hope that the masses appreciate this free information service. Take what free information, knowledge, and/or entertainment you can and if you are not satisfied then simply change channel. At times there can be some extremely offensive things written about webmasters, but mostly these “keyboard warriors” are invisible. Who are these people? Of course we like to receive constructive criticism, but “babble from the padded cell” is never useful to anybody whatsoever. It is so easy to “talk the talk” but few dare to “walk the walk” and show us how they think it is supposed to be done. Sometimes there is so much pent up venom in the emails that we cannot possibly comprehend what they are trying to say at all. That is clearly their problem. By all means readers should write constructive criticism to webmasters, but please be clear and specific in the message you are trying to convey.

THE STRIP GOGO BAR PATPONG SOI 2

Running a website about Thailand can often be a mixture of pleasure and pain. However, for the most part we enjoy what we do, because we know that the majority appreciate and welcome our online service. I firmly believe that for all the websites out there, you will not find many very good Thailand websites. In terms of accurate, up-to-date and informative Thailand websites, they remain very few and far between. We should therefore appreciate the likes of Stickman who has diligently churned out a weekly column year after year. Believe somebody in the know, when I say that it is no easy task. This is why I have the utmost respect for Stickman’s dedication and hard work over all these years. Stickman can at times be a controversial columnist, but speaking from experience, as a person Stickman is a real gentleman. As for Stickman’s success, the growth of his readership can only be termed as remarkable. Long live Stickmania!

Stickman’s Thoughts:

Gosh Dave, you have me positively blushing.

But you’re right, maintaining a website is a lot of effort, to say nothing of all of the other parts of our sites. You meet some great people along the journey, and a few ratbags as well. But that is all part of the ride!

Mayweather VS McGregor (WBC Title)

Friday, August 25th, 2017

The burning question this weekend is who will win the WBC Super Welterweight Title Fight? Will it be Super Slick Floyd Mayweather, or Mad Irishman Conor McGregor?

Dubbed ‘The Money Fight’ these two fighters are set for an enormous pay day on Sunday, August 27th. In fact, it’s such HUGE money that it’s extremely obscene!

For the multitudes of fight fans around the world, we want to see an action-packed World Title Fight, this is what matters to us.

CHEQUERS PUB SPECIAL BOXING BREAKFAST

So, where do you watch Mayweather vs McGregor in Bangkok? Well, I suggest Stumble Inn Bar (Sukhumvit Soi 4), Chequers Pub (Sukhumvit Soi 4), The Kiwi Pub (Sukhumvit Soi 8), The Australian (Sukhumvit Soi 11), or last but by no means least The Game (Sukhumvit Soi 9). There’s five good choices, so pick what you prefer. All of these Bangkok bars, are great theme pubs in their own right.

STUMBLE INN BAR – DOORS OPEN 09:00 FOR HAPPY HOUR & FOOD IS AVAILABLE

They state when their pub doors open, but the Mayweather vs McGregor fight will not start before 10:00 AM. It’s expected to start between 10:00-11:00 AM. Don’t get up at the crack of dawn, unless you are determined to get the best ringside seat!

I am looking forward to the Big Fight and I think this will be an exciting encounter of two great fighters. Will Mayweather box too clever, or will McGregor knock him out?

Amazing Thailand Street Food Vendors

Street Eat Beat!

It is important what you believe these days, especially with the increasing amount of inaccurate reports and fake news in the various forms of media. It is so often the biggest media companies who are  the worst offenders.

Fairly recently it was reported that all Bangkok street food vendors were to be removed, but this did not happen. Sukhumvit Road street vendors remain out in force and I was out taking some photos this week to show you.

The string of street food vendor photos below are from Soi Nana…

Thailand Weather Warning

Being English, I guess I have that stereotypical obsession for the weather. It’s that time of year again, when the heavens open up and down comes the rain. The Thai authorities are telling us not to ignore flood warnings, especially in certain provinces, where flash floods can and do occur.

MONSOON SEASON IN THAILAND 2017

The rain in Thailand comes down suddenly and within minutes the roads can start to flood. If you ever get caught unprepared in a heavy downpour, you can buy an umbrella and/or a raincoat from the numerous 7 Eleven shops. Also, make sure during the rainy season you have suitable footwear.

Just be prepared, because the worst of the torrential rain is yet to come. The photo below depicts how Thai street vendors protect themselves and their goods against the elements. Rain does not stop play!

Big Night On Patpong This Friday

Wednesday, March 29th, 2017

This Friday, March 31st should be a good night to hit Patpong as there is the 10 Year Anniversary Party of The Strip Bar, the 11 Year Anniversary Party of BarBar Fetish Club and it is Dan’s Birthday Bash at Electric Blue.

I have also been hearing good things about the Dragon’s Head next to Foodland. The small venue, formally G’s German Restaurant, is now a live music venue hosting some really good bands.  They recently started doing Chinese Food from the Golden Bowl, which is well known and has all the classic Western Style Chinese dishes.   Craft cocktails and special imported beers are on offer, with Singha Draft Beer at just 69฿ before 9:00 PM.  This is a great place for guys who want to relax and not get hassled for lady drinks.

BarBar Fetish Club, next to The Strip, will be putting on some special shows and there will be a free glass of bubbly for patrons.  Bangkok legends like Dean Barrett will probably be around, as this club is well know among the old hands.

Apparently new carpet has been fitted and one, or two of the girls there at the moment are hotter than mustard. Check out Mai… What a cracker!!!

mai at barbar fetish club

The Strip of course will be pumping it for their 10 Year Anniversary and my old mate and former co-owner Toby will  also be around.  There is a glass of bubbly on offer there for well wishers and it will be a chance to catch up with some old faces and Patpong regulars.

the strip patpong

Dan’s Birthday Bash at Electric Blue has its own Facebook event so well wishers can check in and let them know you are coming. They are offering 10฿ Tequila Shots, which is a real bargain in this day and age, and  they will likely be pushing the boat out, so there should be a good lineup of talent at all the venues this Friday.

If you see a bald bloke with a camera  having a good time… It’s probably me 🙂

Big Dogs Bar Party

Tuesday, March 28th, 2017

It’s party time at Big Dogs Bar, located smack bang on the corner of the entrance to Nana Entertainment Plaza.

Free Food will be available, but more importantly it is Happy Hour Prices All Night Until Closing Time. Enjoy!

Do You Need A Night Nurse?

Tuesday, March 14th, 2017

Like many others, I have been a regular visitor to Spanky’s GoGo Bar for several years now. You may know that I ran Angelwitch Rock Dancers next door for 10 years. I watched Spanky’s develop into one of Thailand’s most popular gogo bars that is has become today. It is simply an iconic gogo bar.

In the early years the shows were very slapstick and corny, but nowadays there is more sophistication in the stage shows. However, the fun ‘n’ frolics still remains, as a major aspect of the appeal. It is an escape from the real world.

Spanky’s GoGo Bar is located on the Middle Level of Nana Plaza.

Soi Nana Closing Times

Monday, March 13th, 2017

Welcome to Bangkok nightlife! The bar scene on Soi Nana has settled back into the “Bangkok buzz” with later closing times.

Most beer bars and pubs in the Nana vicinity close at 2:00 AM sharp, with the exception of a few beer bars. But, there are some other late night options, with the popular gogo bars in Nana Plaza closing at 3:00 AM.

There is also EQ Late Night Club, which usually stays open until at least 4:00 AM. It’s great to see Soi Nana buzzing again!

Friday The 13th

Thursday, January 12th, 2017

My apologies to readers for such a long delay in posting and updating my website, this has been due to some personal issues including the passing of my dear old mother before Christmas. In addition, five of my friends passed away in 2016 making it my worst year on record.

Thankfully the dreadful 2016 is now behind us all and many people are feeling more optimistic about this New Year.  I shall be posting a lot more regularly and updating the site, starting now!

FRIDAY 13th.

friday the 13th in bangkok

Considered by many in Western countries to be an unlucky day, this is not true for Thais who see nothing wrong with the number 13 at all.  In fact, since it’s a Friday and we’re still in high season, it’s just another reason to have a party and many bars and clubs seem to be doing just that tomorrow.

First on the list in the Nana area is EQ Late Night Club, which is holding a killer Hip Hop Night with DJ Remi and MC Boakye, giving you a blood curdling night full of HIP HOP from the past three decades 🙂
Doors open at 10:00 PM, with 99 baht Singha, Singha Light and standard mix drinks until midnight. There is also 50% off select bottles before midnight.

There are also a couple of interesting events on Patpong.

BarBar is holding a Fetish Playground Party and I am told there will be snacks served on a naked girl (sounds interesting), as well as masks and special shows.  Couples are welcome. BarBar is located on Patpong soi 2.

Right next door at the Strip they are holding a Back In Black Party featuring the girl dressed in black skirts.  They have a very generous 70 baht on all beers until 9:00 PM and  I was at the last one they did, which was a  great night, so I might drop down myself for a beer or two 🙂   Check out the lovelies in the video below…

Please do share and check in for lots more updates coming soon….
