Thailand’s Mourning Period Ends

Sunday, October 29th, 2017

Bangkok Nightlife Resumes

the big mango 1 - Thailand's Mourning Period Ends

The official mourning period for His Majesty King Bhumibol Aduljadej ends tonight. In what has been a tremendously emotional ceremony, the scale of the Royal Funeral showed just how much the late King Rama 9 was loved.

The spectacular funeral procession and sheer volume of people attending was nothing short of phenomenal. Worldly foreign travelers were reported as saying, they have never seen anything like it in their lives. One long-term expat said, “There was an ocean of Thai people, as far as your eyes could see.”

It is hoped that November will see the start of the tourist season, with cool, dry weather and a steady spike in tourists arrivals. Following a very tough year for the entertainment industry, it is very much anticipated.

Thailand Bans Smoking On 20 Beaches

Patpong Beach Phuket - Thailand Bans Smoking On 20 Beaches

PATONG BEACH PHUKET THAILAND 2017

Butt Out Or Go To Jail

Thailand has banned smoking on 20 of its popular tourist beaches. While the move seems smart, the draconian punishments are extremely harsh. Offenders caught smoking could face one year in prison, and/or a maximum fine of 100,000 baht.

I agree in theory with a ban on smoking to preserve Thailand’s beaches, but realistically, littering of any kind should be banned.

What about the rest of the litter bugs? The endless streams of plastic cups, plastic bags, discarded food cartons, sweet wrappers, etc.

This particularly applies to the beaches in Pattaya, which have become badly polluted following decades of neglect. The Thai authorities have partly dealt with the pollution problem, but they need to address the whole issue.

Thailand bans smoking on 20 popular tourist beaches

Thailand is to ban smoking on some of the country’s most popular tourist beaches, with the prospect of up to a year in prison for those caught lighting up, according to reports by local media.

Bangkok’s 50 Best Breakfast Eateries

bangkok thailand - Bangkok's 50 Best Breakfast Eateries

WHERE IS THE BEST BREAKFAST IN BANGKOK?

If you need a good Bangkok breakfast bucket list, then you are in luck. This listing is certainly not talking about a sloppy brekkie at Greasy Joe’s Mobile Cafe! Oh no, this includes some of the finest cafes and restaurants in Bangkok.

BK Magazine explores the City of Angels with meticulous detail, stating the names, locations, food on offer, prices and opening hours, at each eatery. The guys at BK Magazine have not just done the leg work for you, they have tested the food and recorded the important details. Hey, aren’t we lucky!

I think certain websites and forums focus way too much on the stereotypical “Cheap Charlie” when it comes down to prices in Thailand. There are a lot of people who don’t mind paying a fair price for a good meal. All of us mere mortals are on a one-way ticket, so we might as well enjoy the journey.

I hope you find the article useful and enjoy visiting some of the suggested venues. Please feel free to write about your favourite Bangkok breakfast eateries in the comments section below the embedded article.

Dollhouse Pattaya Opens VIP Lounge

Wednesday, September 20th, 2017

The Dollhouse Go-Go Bar down in Sin City, otherwise known as Pattaya are opening a XXX Vip Lounge. The concept is based upon agogo meets gentlemen’s club, all rolled into one. Knowing these guys there will be a few surprises too.

This Friday, September 22nd is the Soft Opening of the XXX VIP Lounge, which promises to provide plenty of pampering and pleasure! This is a format the Thailand’s nightlife scene should have adopted many years ago.

Dollhouse Pattaya - Dollhouse Pattaya Opens VIP Lounge

The concept is to combine the best of East and West, with the raunchy bump ‘n’ grind of Thai gogo dancers and the Western strip club format. The modern day gentlemen’s clubs partly do this, but certainly not entirely.

Daves Raves – I wish The Dollhouse all the best for endeavouring to introduce something fresh to the gogo bar scene in Pattaya.

The Dollhouse is located down Soi 15 Walking Street.

British Pound Bounces Back

Tuesday, September 19th, 2017

british pounds sterling - British Pound Bounces Back

It’s been a good week for the British pound, as it surged against both the American dollar and the Euro.

In what can only be described as a sudden turnaround, the pound has made a surprise comeback. Last week the sterling rose to a one-year high of $1.327 against the American dollar.

Similar to a scene from a Rocky movie, the British sterling was “pounded” against the ropes, but has come out on top. The previous fear of Brexit sent the pound into a spiraling descent, with the Euro continuing to gain in strength for some time now.

The spike in the pound is largely due to the threat of the British Government being forced to raise interest rates. The reason is linked to a rise of inflation, as the decision looms in the British financial atmosphere.

thai baht notes - British Pound Bounces Back

Regarding a very strong Thai baht, there has been some national criticism of the Thai government. Some locals are saying it’s affecting the export market and also that Thailand is becoming a more expensive option.

However, there is more good news for Brits, as the pound has also risen against the Thai baht. A number of disgruntled Brits will say, “About bloody time” and they will no doubt expect more. But, the poor performance of the pound has really affected Brits abroad. Also, the staggering strength of the baht has dented the fixed income of expats, especially British pensioners living in Thailand.

Dare we say the pound is starting to look bullish?! Let’s hope the pound continues to rise to around 50 baht, where it will really start to gain attention.

Strong Tropical Storm Lashes Phuket

Saturday, September 16th, 2017

Phuket has been hit hard by a fierce tropical storm that has caused flash floods and landslides. As a result of the landslides, one construction site of nine villas has collapsed, but no deaths, or injuries were reported.

Some parts of Phuket are flooded so deep, they are not accessible by vehicles. Those who needed to cross certain parts of the popular beach resort, were forced to improvise by using boats and jet skis.

Phuket Police Officers were forced to move upstairs at Patong Police Station, because flood water rose so high inside the building.

Typhoon Doksuri that recently battered Vietnam is now sweeping across Northern Thailand. A severe weather warning is issued to other beach resorts and cities across Thailand to brace for the storm.

Fortunately, Bangkok and Pattaya have remained unaffected so far.

Best Bang-For-Baht Breakfast

Bangkok & Pattaya Took Lae Dee

Foodland is a superb value for money supermarket chain. There are branches in both Bangkok and Pattaya that are open 24 hours. They stock a wide range of products at reasonable prices, and they even have a pharmacy section.

Inside each Foodland Supermarket there is a Took Lae Dee Restaurant. The literal translation of Took Lae Dee is “cheap and good” which is a very accurate description. You know the food is both cheap and good, when you see so many locals eating at these Thai style diners.

I still can’t believe that Bangkok is such a huge city and yet, there is a definite lack of 24 hour restaurants. Thankfully, we’ve got Took Lae Dee!

chicken fried rice bangkok - Best Bang-For-Baht Breakfast

The American Breakfast must be the best bang-for-baht you can possibly get anywhere in Thailand. It costs just 79 baht for 2 Eggs, Ham or Sausage, Toast, Butter, Preserves, Orange or Pineapple Juice, plus Tea or Coffee. If you hit it at Happy Hour (05:30-09:00) the American Breakfast is only 62 baht.

In Bangkok, I prefer the Took Lae Dee branches on Sukhumvit Soi 16 and in Patpong Soi 2, because both restaurants have tables to sit comfortably. However, the Took Lae Dee Restaurant on Sukhumvit soi 5 gets very crowded and there are no tables. Also, service can be very slow compared to the other branches, so patience is definitely needed sometimes.

As an added bonus, drinking water is free with refills as well. This will be like paradise to the Cheap Charlie Clan!

Took Lae Dee Thailand - Best Bang-For-Baht Breakfast

The menu has a selection of Thai, Asian and Western dishes, including the tasty Chinese Roast Pork. The Chicken Fried Rice is delicious and as cheap as chips. Took Lae Dee really takes some beating and being open 24 hours, this gives Foodland a great advantage over competitors.

Daves Raves – If you don’t like waiting, walk inside the supermarket and do your shopping. By the time you get back your food will be ready. You can eat in, or take it home along with your shopping. Hey, that’s two jobs done in one!

Doing The Street Eat Beat!

Friday, September 8th, 2017

Do I have a food fetish? I am in a bit of a funny mood today. Is there something kind of kinky about street food in Thailand?

Now I know that is a strange question, but let me explain. A few moons ago, down on Sukhumvit Road, there is a gorgeous girl who makes delicious Fried Pork. But, sadly some guy has porked the pork girl and that’s the end of that fantasy!

The street food scene in Thailand is certainly something you would not see in the Western world. Back in Farangland, “Greasy Joe’s Fat Burger” is not what I call street food at all.

STUMBLE SOI NANA 17 08 2017 007 - Doing The Street Eat Beat!

I love the simplicity of Thai street food; it’s quick, cheap and tasty. We must remember that grilling meat is so much healthier than deep frying it to death!

Whenever you have the munchies, you can grab a few of those Barbecue Chicken Sticks at the silly cost of 10 baht each. Just wait a few minutes and you are good to go with your healthy fast food. It’s ideal when you are on the move. You can eat them right there on the street, while you travel, or save them to eat in your room. The Thais do it all the time. You know, when in Rome and all that jazz!

STUMBLE SOI NANA 17 08 2017 122 - Doing The Street Eat Beat!

As for the operators themselves, Thai street stalls are practical, cost-effective and in some cases, it’s a very profitable little business. Once they acquire a street space, for relatively little cost “Bee’s Barbecue” can be up and running in no time.

I admire how innovative the Thais can be. An old oil barrel is sliced in half and made into a barbecue stand. Have you seen those big clay pots? They are filled with charcoal and a steel grill is placed over the top. It’s a simple idea and yet so practical. The street food carts bearing anything from Som Tam (Spicy Papaya Salad) to fresh fruit bring a new meaning to “meals-on-wheels.”

Soi Nana Bangkok 03 2 - Doing The Street Eat Beat!

Your grub is cooked in no time and it’s very delicious. So many Thais prefer street food to fancy restaurants. They tell me it just does not taste the same.

Daves Raves – At times I think the Western world could learn a lot from practical, cost-effective concepts we see in Thailand. Sometimes less is more and simplicity is the key to success and satisfaction.
