URGENT UPDATE – Due to local elections some of the go-go bars, beer bars and nightclubs will be closed in Bangkok on Saturday (28/08/10). Pubs have been told not to serve alcohol, so Saturday is likely to be a dry day in most Bangkok bars. The good news is that Pattaya is open and serving alcohol as usual, so you can plan accordingly. I know that a number of guys have headed down to Pattaya for the weekend.
SOI COWBOY & NANA PLAZA UPDATE - Some go-go bars will be open in Soi Cowboy and Nana Plaza tonight (28/08/10). Several bar bosses have decided to open, but not serve alcohol. It is never easy to give accurate updates, because the situation often changes so quickly. A number of bars will close and others will open, but it will probably be a dry day. Several sources are saying that the MIB or Men In Brown will be out checking the bars in Bangkok tonight. Thai Elections and Buddha Days are sometimes taken very seriously. Tonight in Nana Plaza the four Rainbow Bars, Mercury, Mandarin, Spankys and Angelwitch will be open tonight. It will be interesting to see what happens.
NANA PLAZA, BANGKOK – The demolition of three ground level beer bars in Nana Plaza caused quite a stir recently. Once again, there were all kinds of rumours flying around. (11/08/10 – There is an update at the end of this article)… (more…)
Despite what some people may say about Thailand, there is an increase in tourist traffic. Both the roads and the pavements in Bangkok now have busier traffic. The number of foreign arrivals into Bangkok is on the rise. (more…)
I have visited Soi Cowboy several times in recent weeks. Despite the hype from some people, it was not that busy in the majority of go-go bars. In fact, Marc who is the manager of Dollhouse told me last night, bar trade in Soi Cowboy slowed down a lot these past few weeks. As I have said before, it is the same everywhere with very few exceptions. (more…)
BANGKOK 18/05/2010 – The United Nations has urged Thailand to put an end to the violent clashes and restart negotiations. This is easier said than done, because a minority of extreme anti-government militants are hellbent on violence. It is a very difficult situation for the Thai government to deal with and a tremendous amount of restraint and tolerance, will be required by everyone here in Bangkok… (more…)
Out of the three main go-go bar areas in Bangkok, Soi Cowboy remains the busiest overall. This will probably become more evident, as the rainy season approaches. The main reason is simple; the clientele in Nana Plaza and Patpong consists of an increasing number of tourists and infrequent visitors. Therefore, the number of foreign visitors drops in the rainy season, as you well know. In addition to a general decline in foreign visitors, Patpong has recently suffered further from the anti-government violence in Silom. Furthermore, Patpong and Nana Plaza have more restrictions on ‘showing’ than in Soi Cowboy. It is unfortunate for Patpong, but with Soi Cowboy being relatively unaffected by the anti-government protests, Cowboy will inevitably benefit from this situation. Soi Cowboy has become popular with resident expats for several reasons, which includes the numerous Happy Hours on offer. (more…)
Despite the recent bomb blasts at Sala Daeng Skytrain Station, I decided a visit to Silom was long overdue. I spontaneously felt I needed to go and report what was happening in Patpong. (more…)
Despite the Thai capital being quieter due to the ongoing political problems, it is still business as usual in Bangkok’s bars, pubs and clubs. In fact, some bars and clubs have recently been granted later closing times. This is good news for the nocturnal revellers who want to party on until the wee hours. (more…)
Tonight the bars, especially the Irish Bars will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day right across Thailand. With the amount of booze that will be consumed, Irish eyes will no doubt be shinning, as well as smiling! Being the only traditional Irish Pub on Soi Nana, tonight Finnegan’s Pub hosts a special St. Patrick’s Day Party. From 9:00 PM until late the talented musicians, ‘Collide’ will provide the live music entertainment. Guinness is at the special price of ONLY 150 baht a pint, Jameson’s Irish Whisky is 2-4-1 all night, and Heineken pints are ONLY 125 baht. During the party night Gerry is generously offering FREE Irish stew, FREE Green Jelly Bombers, FREE special shooters and Finnegan’s St. Patrick’s Day T shirts for bar bills over 500 baht. Enjoy! A variety of stealth sleuth operations has discovered shocking evidence that there is sex-on-sale in the tourist resort of Pattaya. Several police divisions have revealed that a very serious crackdown will begin next month to catch foreign business people who are financial backers of gay bars, beer bars and go-go bars, where there is sex-on-sale in Pattaya.
Police investigations will determine who pays the bills and gets the profits. If the person is a foreigner, then their visa will be revoked and they will be expelled from Thailand. If it is a Thai, they will be arrested if sex is for sale. There is supposedly much concern about organized crime in the nightlife venues, said one official.
One Police Chief commented, ‘Where did the money come from? Who is behind it? Where does the money go?’
‘I advise anyone who has invested in a bar that might be suspected of illegal acts to clear up the problem and make sure they are not associated with any business that is engaged in illegal activities. The Thai police are taking this very seriously. Sure, in the past we have heard rumours of crackdowns, but I don’t think we have ever seen a crackdown like the one that is about to happen,’ said Drew Noyes, Managing Director of the Pattaya Times.
DAVES RAVES – You may have noticed that the Pattaya Times has covered this story, whereas the BIG media channels and newspapers have not covered the story at all. It will be interesting to see what happens in Pattaya next month.
NOTE THE QUOTE – THAILAND CRACKDOWNS
‘Probably what the Thailand needs more than anything is a crackdown on crackdowns.’ (Anon).

STREET BEAT – Late last night I spontaneously decided to check out the after dark scene in Bangkok. I went to Climax Club on Sukhumvit Soi 11 and it was rocking! This is where Thai girls like to party after dark and there is no cash ‘n’ carry for a Thai takeaway. Don’t be shy give it a try!
STREET BEAT – Formerly known as Spice Club, the renamed Climax Club is located in Ambassador Hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 11. It is now open late and gets going from 2am onwards. The Thai DJs stereotypically play techno and hip hop music. Well, that is if you can call that music!
STREET BEAT – I also did a street beat patrol of the ‘pavement pubs’ that are located from Sukhumvit Soi 5 right up towards Asoke. These unlicensed mobile bars are turning over a fair trade. From my intensive research I discovered that a beer will cost you 80 baht at all the pavement pubs. Bloody hell, I’m feeling rough today!
DAVES RAVES – I like to shop and eat at Foodland, but Sukhumvit Soi 5 transcends into ‘Little Africa’ after dark. It makes Caucations feel like you are Tarzan!
PAVEMENT PUBS – The Bangkok Post published an article entitled ‘Bangkok’s sleazy street of shame’ – QUICK CLICK
DAVES RAVES – This Christmas Thailand did not have the tourist troops marching in as expected. None of the beach resorts in Thailand were particularly busy for the time of year. Hopefully New Year’s Eve will be busier.

WEATHER WATCH – Currently Bangkok is cool and dry. The cool season has arrived and it is the ideal time to visit in terms of the climate.
DAVES RAVES – Thailand’s cool guys! Well, it is ‘cool’ in more ways than one, but it is a relief that the temperature has dropped.
DAVES RAVES – The tourist troops are marching into Bangkok and the increasing number of foreigners is visible on the streets.
There are early indications that the forthcoming high season in Nana Plaza is likely to be better than expected. Well, this at least applies to the most popular go-go bars. Some go-go bars in Nana Plaza are very busy for the beginning of October. For instance, last Friday night was one of the busiest nights in Angelwitch for the entire year. The show ‘n’ go-go bars are continuing to do a brisk trade at weekends. The main show bars in Nana Plaza are, Angelwitch, Spankys and Hollywood Carousel. (more…)
