BANGKOK NIGHTLIFE NEWSFLASH
Some go-go bars in Nana Plaza will be OPEN tonight (Friday, May 8th). Today, it is Visakha Bucha Day and therefore, the availability of alcohol might be a bit limited, and most bars across Bangkok will be closed. However, pubs and bars that hold a restaurant license might be serving alcohol. Take a bit of time to ask around and you will eventually find an oasis. This is why its known as Amazing Thailand. Thailand never ceases to amaze us! From the current information I have, the Rainbow Go-Go Bars, DC-10 Bar, Mercury Go-Go Bar, Spankys Go-Go Bar and Angelwitch Go-Go Bar will be open tonight.
*Note that these are just the go-go bars in Nana Plaza that I know are open. There will most probably be more*
It is thought that there is a good chance that alcohol will be available in Nana Plaza, but this is not confirmed 100% yet. It’s worth visiting Nana Plaza if you want to enjoy your Friday night out in Bangkok tonight.
PATTAYA GO-GO BARS ON WALKING STREET
A friend who is in Pattaya asked four bar owners about tonight. Three out of the four Walking Street go-go bar owners said that they would be CLOSED tonight. However, look around and you will usually find a few bars that are open.
THAILAND NIGHTLIFE REPORTING
Last week I mentioned an increase in bar trade in Bangkok and Pattaya. But, I deliberately did not state exactly how much of an increase. It would be wrong to state that everywhere is doing a brisk trade. But then again, it would also be incorrect to assume that everywhere is dead. Generally, the most popular bars always keep their heads well above water, whereas the unpopular bars always struggle. For example, if you walk into two bars and they are both quiet, you could be misled into thinking that the whole vicinity is dead. You might possibly be right. But, what if those particular bars are always dead? OOPS! You have wrongly assessed that area, especially if other bars are doing a brisk trade. Therefore, creating an accurate picture is never that simple. As a former social worker, I was instructed not to assume. This “ass-u-me” translates as, “Never make an ass of you or me.” If every bar in a particular area is quiet, then there is the answer… (more…)
SMOKING BAN IN A STATE OF CONFUSION
With some bars allowing smoking and other bars not, it does make the smoking ban look like a farce. There are establishments where the so-called smoking ban has not been enforced whatsoever. Once again, go-go bars are at the centre of the controversy. In the Lumpini area (lower Sukhumvit Road), the Hotels and restaurants have been told they must enforce the smoking ban, but some bars in Nana Plaza are currently exempt. In stark contrast, further along Sukhumvit Road, the bars in Soi Cowboy have been told to comply to the new law. Down in Pattaya, a number of the go-go bar owners are allowing smoking, but they have been told to be discrete. Word from Thai sources is that the smoking ban will be enforced eventually, but currently there is a grace period. Understand that if you can! Thailand’s Ministry Of Health (rather than the police) will apparently be checking to see who is complying to the smoking ban. After May 31st, 2008 all hotels and public establishments must comply to the smoking ban, or face a 20,000 Baht fine. So far, it looks like the ban has gone up in a cloud of smoke.
