FRIDAY FEEDING FRENZY!

It is always important to stoke up your engine, before a bout of ‘Friday Night Fever’ in Thailand.  A variety of bars and pubs in Bangkok, offer a complimentary buffet to get Friday night off to a good start.  This week I feature Soi 8 Pub on the left-hand side, as you enter Sukhumvit Soi 8.  In my opinion, Soi 8 Pub is a serious contender for best pub in Bangkok.  Soi 8 Pub has a variety of food available, which by far exceeds the pub grub found elsewhere.  Some of the dishes make it an excellent ‘meal deal’ by any standards. A Visit To Soi 8 Pub In Bangkok

ENGLISH BREAKFAST AT SOI 8 PUB IN BANGKOK

THE BIG BREAKFAST IN SOI 8 PUB BANGKOK

THE BIG BREAKFAST IN SOI 8 PUB BANGKOK

This week I decided to go to Soi 8 Pub. I had not been there in several weeks, so I was overdue for a visit. After having a chat with the owner Dave, I decided to study the menu. I suffered a bit of an ‘analysis paralysis’ because there is so much of a selection. I settled for the English breakfast. WOW! It was a very large plate of food and all for just 185 baht. Some places in Bangkok charge 200-300 baht. Plus you have to pay for VAT and service charge on top.

Briefly observe Dave The Rave’s expanding waistline and you will see that I have had a lot of ‘pub grub’ in my day. Therefore, I feel I have experience in this area…

The old spit ‘n’ sawdust British pubs would sometimes throw in a breakfast for ‘Billy Bunters’ (punters), who stayed overnight at that particular tavern, or inn. By using the English colloquilism ‘throw in’ it became a literal translation. The buxom barmaid would sling your plate of incinerated fatty food right at you. Nowadays modern pubs are a lot more sophisticated and thank goodness they are!

I have to admit that I am an ardent fan of Soi 8 Pub in Bangkok. Located close to the entrance to Sukhumvit Soi 8, it is conveniently located for respectable folks, as well as piss artists alike! Recently, Soi 8 Pub has expanded the seating area to the left as you walk in the door. While some bar owners in Bangkok are cutting back, Kiwi Dave is expanding his horizons. On Christmas Day, Soi 8 Pub remained full all day. How many bars and restaurants can you say that about?

The service girls wear a smart uniform and they are always friendly and helpful. All in all, it was a terrific tasting, authentic English breakfast. This is a BIG breakfast, so make sure that you are famished. The service was as efficient as ever. I can confidently say that the ‘pub grub’ here is excellent value for money. Soi 8 Pub gets two thumbs up from Dave The Rave… Don’t be shy give it a try!

Daves Raves – One Knight In Bangkok

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

STEPHEN HENDRY ROADSHOW THAILAND 2008Snooker legend Stephen Hendry has returned to Bangkok from two very busy, but enjoyable days in Koh Samui and Pattaya.  The pubs in Koh Samui and especially Pattaya, gave Stephen a deserved warm welcome.  In particular, the venues in Pattaya really made an effort to promote the Stephen Hendry Roadshow and it certainly paid off for them.  In the Queen Victoria Pub in Pattaya, two autographed polo shirts were auctioned off.  A total of  34,000 baht was raised for charity.  Ralf Winkler, the official photographer for the Stephen Hendry Roadshow commented, “Stephen has a lot of fans in Pattaya, he was very busy meeting them all.”  Roadshow organisers Rob Murray (Fluid Asia Pacific) and Bryan Sharp (Scottish and Newcastle Brewery) are very pleased how well the event has gone.  Rob said, “We have received very positive feedback about Stephen from all of the venues that he has attended.”

JOHN SMITH'S BITTER IN THAILANDAs the old saying goes, all good things must come to an end.  And so, we come to Stephen Hendry’s last evening in Thailand.  I don’t think I can emphasize this enough, but Stephen is one of the all-time greats, who ranks along side the world’s most accomplished sportsmen.  Stephen will make his final Roadshow appearance in Soi 8 Pub at 5:00pm and then in New Wave on Sukhumvit, Soi 7 at 6:30pm.  The Stephen Hendry Roadshow was proudly hosted by John Smith’s Bitter and Strongbow Draught Cider.

We hope that Stephen enjoyed his time in Thailand, as much as we have enjoyed meeting him.  Stephen is a true gentleman and I am sure that many people will eagerly await his return to Thailand.

As for Stephen’s female fans, they were pleased to see that there was at least “One Knight In Bangkok!”

Daves Raves – Buddhist Holiday

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

SUNRISE TACOS - BANGKOK - THAILANDHello Guys, I have been thinking about you recently.  Hey, now don’t get worried, because I’m not getting gay here!  I appreciate the large audience that this website has created over the past 18 months.  Therefore, I want to keep you updated more regularly.  Recently, I have been wondering about how I could update the website more often.  You may have noticed that I have created several new pages.  At first, I was so proud to see those new sections up online for the entire world to see.  I thought, “Great stuff!”  Then I thought about the time and effort involved to update them all.  Oops!  I hadn’t taken that into consideration.  For example, if you look at the alphabetical listings, you will see that some are more updated than others are.  Please excuse me for that, but there are only so many hours in a day!  The good thing is that I can keep posting updates and those A-Z listings will eventually fill up with information.  It just takes time that’s all.  Last month this website received the most hits in over a year.  Thanks for all your support; this is what makes it all worthwhile.  Cheers!

BUDDHIST HOLIDAY – MONDAY, MAY 19th

BUDDHIST TEMPLE - BANGKOK - THAILANDYou need to be aware that this Monday, May 19th is a Buddhist Holiday.  Wan Visakha Bucha is one of the most important Buddha Days on the Thai calendar.  From the information I have gathered, you will probably find that most nightlife areas across Thailand are likely to be closed on May 19th out of respect.  But, if you ask around you might get lucky.  Remember that restaurants and some pubs will still be open.  In conclusion, remember that the vast majority of go-go bars, beer bars and nightclubs will be closed.  If anything chances closer to May 19th I will post another update.

STEPHEN HENDRY ROADSHOW

STEPHEN HENDRY - SEVEN-TIME WORLD SNOOKER CHAMPIONFrom this Monday, May 19th until May 23rd seven-time World Snooker Champion Stephen Hendry will arrive as a guest of John Smith’s Bitter and Strongbow Draught Cider.  Stephen who comes from Edinburgh in Scotland likes Thailand and he has accumulated many Thai fans.  At one time, Stephen Hendry was top of the world rankings for a record eight consecutive years.  Stephen was also the youngest ever World Snooker Champion at the age of 21.  Stephen will be making a series of one-hour appearances at pubs in Bangkok, Pattaya and Koh Samui.  Stephen will make himself available for a questions and answers session, as well as some exhibition frames.  John Smith’s Extra Smooth Bitter and Strongbow Cider will be available for a special discount price at each venue.

WISHING STEPHEN HENDRY A WARM WELCOME

In association with Brian Sharp from Scottish & Newcastle Brewery and Rob Murray from Fluid Asia Pacific, Dave The Rave wishes Stephen Hendry a warm welcome to Thailand.

NANA PLAZA – AN EARLY TREK INTO THE NEON JUNGLE

NANA PLAZA BANGKOKIf you are looking for a place in Nana Plaza to start your “booze cruise” there are a few options.  I think that most of you guys know that Big Dog’s Bar is a popular choice.  Not just because of its location, but also because Big Dog’s is genuinely a good place to hang out.  With two shifts of bargirls, why wouldn’t it be?  Big Dog’s Bar is a favourite choice of oasis for bestselling author StephenDEAD MEN Leather.  For the uninitiated, Stephen Leather is the author of Private Dancer.  While we are on the subject, if you enjoyed Private Dancer, you might want to read Confessions Of A Bangkok Private Eye.  Steve was the ghost-writer for a series of real private eye investigations in Bangkok by Warren Olson.  Some people are unaware that Steve is a bestselling thriller writer.  His latest thriller is Dead Men.  Steve has just returned to Bangkok for a break away from Farangland. DAVE’S NIGHTSEEING TOURS – SUNRISE TO SOI COWBOY

SOI COWBOY - BANGKOK - THAILAND 007

For some time now, my friend Nick has wanted to hit the town with me.  Nick is currently based in Cambodia as a mine clearance specialist.  Obviously, any day off from the minefields would be relaxing, but I wanted to introduce Nick to some places that he has not visited before.  I took a night off from my duties in Angelwitch Go-Go Bar and I looked forward to the night ahead.  I wasn’t feeling 100% but I was determined to meet Nick and spend some quality time with a good friend.  Nick was about to experience one of my “nightseeing tours” and he seemed keen enough.  We arranged to meet at Sunrise Tacos Mexican Grill, which is located in the Leader Price Complex.  (For those not familiar with the Leader Price Complex, it is right next to Time Square Building between Sukhumvit, Soi 12 and Soi 14).  Several months ago, the owners of Sunrise Tacos decided to take over a vacant space directly opposite their shop.  At first, I was not sure what Greg Lange was intending to do with two Sunrise Tacos shops.  Was Greg intending to open two branches of Sunrise Tacos in the same complex?  This all became very clear when Greg explained the concept to me.  The original Sunrise Tacos is a small place, and it now provides a 24 hour takeaway and delivery service.  The new, larger premise has become a cosy restaurant that is stylishly designed and furbished.  The credit for the interior design goes to Mrs Lange.  Greg’s wife Nui has done a superb job! CELEBRATING ST. PATRICK’S DAY IN BANGKOK (PART TWO)

NANA PLAZA - BANGKOK - THAILAND 002In conclusion, Bully’s Pub has a relaxing atmosphere that appeals to many different types of people.  Bully’s attracts singles, couples and even families.  It is an ideal place to meet friends, unwind after a long day, and/or enjoy live sports on a large TV screen.  Bully’s Pub is a bit more upmarket than other pubs in the area.  The prices tend to be higher and you will pay government tax on all food and beverage items.  Just to let you know where you stand.  It was time to leave the cosy comfort of Bully’s Pub…
