Bangkok Bars Closed On 28/08/10

Friday, August 27th, 2010

URGENT UPDATE – Due to local elections some of the go-go bars, beer bars and nightclubs will be closed in Bangkok on Saturday (28/08/10).  Pubs have been told not to serve alcohol, so Saturday is likely to be a dry day in most Bangkok bars.  The good news is that Pattaya is open and serving alcohol as usual, so you can plan accordingly.  I know that a number of guys have headed down to Pattaya for the weekend.

SOI COWBOY & NANA PLAZA UPDATE - Some go-go bars will be open in Soi Cowboy and Nana Plaza tonight (28/08/10).  Several bar bosses have decided to open, but not serve alcohol.  It is never easy to give accurate updates, because the situation often changes so quickly.  A number of bars will close and others will open, but it will probably be a dry day.  Several sources are saying that the MIB or Men In Brown will be out checking the bars in Bangkok tonight.  Thai Elections and Buddha Days are sometimes taken very seriously.  Tonight in Nana Plaza the four Rainbow Bars, Mercury, Mandarin, Spankys and Angelwitch will be open tonight.  It will be interesting to see what happens.

Cactus Go-Go Bar In Soi Cowboy

Monday, August 16th, 2010

You could say that Cactus Go-Go Bar in Soi Cowboy has real character.  Well, the guy that runs Cactus Bar is definitely a real character!  Cactus John owns and operates one of those bars that can only be described as very different from the norm.  Native American John, serves up some awesome American home style cooking.  Along with  his wacky charisma and wicked sense of humour, ole Cactus John has attracted a cult following.  If you do visit Cactus Bar in Soi Cowboy, please pass on kind regards from Dave The Rave.  Cheers!

BANGKOK BOUNCES BACK

Despite what some people may say about Thailand, there is an increase in tourist traffic.  Both the roads and the pavements in Bangkok now have busier traffic.  The number of foreign arrivals into Bangkok is on the rise. (more…)

SOI COWBOY – LITTLE LAS VEGAS

I have visited Soi Cowboy several times in recent weeks.  Despite the hype from some people, it was not that busy in the majority of go-go bars.  In fact, Marc who is the manager of Dollhouse told me last night, bar trade in Soi Cowboy slowed down a lot these past few weeks.  As I have said before, it is the same everywhere with very few exceptions.  (more…)

WHERE HAVE ALL THE FARANGS GONE?

Just lately, the Thais are asking us why there are so few foreigners visiting Thailand this month.  With confused expressions they genuinely ask, ‘Where farang go, why not come Thailand?’  With a wry smile we reply, ‘Why do you think they are not coming?’  It is as though the mini civil war in Bangkok never happened.  Hey, perhaps they think it was a Hollywood movie! Bangkok Battlefield – 18/05/2010

BANGKOK 18/05/2010 – The United Nations has urged Thailand to put an end to the violent clashes and restart negotiations.  This is easier said than done, because a minority of extreme anti-government militants are hellbent on violence.  It is a very difficult situation for the Thai government to deal with and a tremendous amount of restraint and tolerance, will be required by everyone here in Bangkok… (more…)

SOI COWBOY – LITTLE LAS VEGAS

Out of the three main go-go bar areas in Bangkok, Soi Cowboy remains the busiest overall.  This will probably become more evident, as the rainy season approaches.  The main reason is simple; the clientele in Nana Plaza and Patpong consists of an increasing number of tourists and infrequent visitors.  Therefore, the number of foreign visitors drops in the rainy season, as you well know.  In addition to a general decline in foreign visitors, Patpong has recently suffered further from the anti-government violence in Silom.  Furthermore, Patpong and Nana Plaza have more restrictions on ‘showing’ than in Soi Cowboy.  It is unfortunate for Patpong, but with Soi Cowboy being relatively unaffected by the anti-government protests, Cowboy will inevitably benefit from this situation.  Soi Cowboy has become popular with resident expats for several reasons, which includes the numerous Happy Hours on offer.  (more…)

BANGKOK SONGKRAN, APRIL 13-15, 2010

Down in Kao San Road, Patpong, Soi Nana and Soi Cowboy, the water wars were wet ‘n’ wild under the searing sun.  Songkran is a lot of fun for those who enjoy getting soaked, but it is very frustrating for those of us who do not want to participate.  When you live in Bangkok, or Pattaya there is no escaping it.  Why can’t they just leave the dry people alone?  During the water wars, even passing motorcyclists have bucket loads of water hurled at them.  Combined with too much booze, it’s no wonder there is so much carnage on the roads during Songkran.  I think there should be designated areas and times for the water wars – this would allow the normal people to go about their daily business.  However, Thailand being Thailand, it probably will not ever happen.  (more…)

NANA PLAZA – WELCOME TO THE NEON JUNGLE

RAINBOW 4 GO-GO BAR, NANA PLAZA, BANGKOK

RAINBOW 4 GO-GO BAR, NANA PLAZA, BANGKOK

RAINBOW ROUNDUP – Continuing on our journey into the neon jungle, we decided to check out a couple of the Rainbow Bars.  Rainbow 1 was as lively as ever and the line-up remains for the best part very impressive.  Most of the go-go girls were sporting mono bikinis, but I spotted a few who were in their birthday suits.  Yes indeed, things have finally changed in Nana Plaza.  The gang decided to visit Rainbow 2, which is located next to Obsession Bar in the far right corner.  Rainbow 2 was never a favourite of mine, because I felt it never created the right atmosphere for Westerners.  The amount of open space is partly to blame, but the biggest reason is that it has remained a Jap Trap for many years.  However, things have changed and Rainbow 2 has become more farang friendly.  The stage was packed with go-go girls and the majority were facially and physically attractive.  These Rainbow bar girls know they are cute and sexy, I have never seen mirrors get so much attention! LATER CLOSING TIMES FOR SOME BANGKOK NIGHTCLUBS

Despite the Thai capital being quieter due to the ongoing political problems, it is still business as usual in Bangkok’s bars, pubs and clubs.  In fact, some bars and clubs have recently been granted later closing times.  This is good news for the nocturnal revellers who want to party on until the wee hours.  (more…)

SOI COWBOY – FULL OF FUN FACTOR

I don’t know about you, but every time I look at BBC World News, it is full of doom and gloom.  I seriously wonder what is happening to this world.  Therefore, at some stage, you just have to escape the insanity by switching off the media machine.  How do we do this?  The answer is simple, you get your glad rags on and hit the Thailand nightlife… (more…)

SOI COWBOY – A WALK ON THE WILD WEST SIDE

Once again, I thought it was time to visit Soi Cowboy and so, I took a motorbike taxi to ‘Little Las Vegas’ as I call it.  The neon signs glare at you with a kaleidoscope of colours, and you immediately become immersed into the atmosphere.  Nowadays, Soi Cowboy is very different from the dark, dingy and uninspiring place that I visited over a decade ago.  Perhaps it could now be known as, ‘Disneyworld for the big boys and girls.’ (more…)

NANA PLAZA – WELCOME TO THE NEON JUNGLE

NANA PLAZA UPDATE – The temporary crackdown on ‘showing’ in Nana Plaza has been lifted on January 20th.  At least 10 go-go bars in Nana Plaza have reverted back to mono bikinis.  Furthermore, even a few go-go bars have gone from swim suits to birthday suits.  Hooray!

Nana Plaza has gone through several fazes of change over the past decade, or so.  Even today, the changes in Nana Plaza continue.  Currently, there is an issue regarding ‘showing’ in the go-go bars that has not been resolved.  The majority of go-go bars are left in limbo and are waiting on a decision from the mysterious MIB (Men In Brown).  Last night the go-go girls in the majority of bars were dancing in bikinis.  However, the permission to ‘show’ again from the MIB will be granted very soon.  Nobody seems to know the actual reason for this, except that it is an MIB (Men In Brown) issue of some kind.  If you think ‘teatime’ and power play, you are most probably heading in the right direction.  It is all rather confusing, but it is part of the ‘Amazing Thailand’ landscape, where there is always something happening.
