A Tale Of Two Citys

Sunday, June 25th, 2017

Although I don’t like sounding negative, it has been yet another quiet month for many bar bosses around Bangkok and from what I have seen myself and heard from my “ravers” things haven’t been much better in Pattaya either. To add fuel to the fire, there is more heat on the gogo bars from the MIB (Men In Brown), this is especially the case down in Sin City.

Where did all the big spenders go? This seems to be a question many bar owners are asking themselves. Do we sing Simply Red’s “Money’s Too Tight To Mention” as an appropriate phrase?! The clot plot thickens, as a number of folks find themselves with less and less disposable income.

When I ran Angelwitch GoGo Bar several years ago, we regularly had customers running up chunky bills, without even batting a eyelid. These days it seems people are much more careful about spending their money and are also looking for better bang-for-baht. Which begs the question; are gogo bars still offering good value for money? The dreaded coyote curse (agency dancers) has upset many a sexpat, with a number of bars and especially, bar girls pricing themselves out of the market. In fact, as an example of this, the Stumble Inn Group have already steered themselves in the direction of the more profitable beer bars.

However, as a former bar manager, I have witnessed a considerable drop in the “spender gender” with the cash-constipated clan, trying to make you believe they are down to  their last dollar. I say this in defense of the bars. The times I have seen a major debate (as though it’s a life, or death decision), whether they should order a drink, or not. These frugal folks need to be reminded that these are bars and not museums. There are a number of time-wasters out there. Another point is you can’t blame the bars for everything, which includes certain piss poor foreign currencies that struggle against a strong Thai baht.

My mate Toby was at a Bangkok gogo bar the other night and it was very quiet. There was just a few girls doing the skytrain shuffle on stage, staring into oblivion. Toby had a couple of Johnnie Walker Black’s and bought one gogo girl a lady drink – the bill was already 1,000 baht. I would advise you to ask what the drink prices are before you get stung!

Besides Thailand, is this becoming a universal problem? Back in Britain, the pubs and clubs are closing at an alarming rate, because people just can’t afford to drink in pubs and clubs anymore. If they want to sink some amber nectar, they often buy cheap booze from Supermarkets and drink at home. All of the nightclubs in my home town are closed down and people are forced to travel miles to enjoy clubland.

Meanwhile, back in Bangkok! There’s another part of this vast, sprawling metropolis that is booming. Welcome to clubland! I mention this, because this week the mega popular Insanity Nightclub is moving to Sukhumvit, Soi 11, which has become clubbers central. This “Insanity Gravity” will only strengthen Soi 11 as the main club hub in this inimitable city.

I have not seen the inside of Insanity Nightclub yet (located next to the former Q Bar), but I do know a ton of money has been spent on making it state of the art. Before I forget, the Opening Night this Thursday, June 29th.

It seems money is definitely rolling into the clubs and this seems to be a BIG shift from many moons ago, when clubs were very limited in Bangkok. I remember Thailand in the 1980’s with two of the most famous being Marine Disco in Pattaya and Angels Disco (Nana Hotel), which is now EQ Late Night Club. Things have really come a long way and this is indeed a very positive aspect of Bangkok’s nightlife.

The Castle Fetish Club in Pattaya opens a men only fetish club on July 1st. It is located next door and it is called Sodom.   When you go there just make sure you go through the right door, or you might be in for a bit of surprise. Sounds like a good prank for a stag night to me  🙂

Mercury GoGo Bar (Middle Floor Nana Plaza) is undergoing renovations. It turns a shade of pink on July 1st, as it reopens as Mercury Ladyboy Bar.

Soi Cowboy

Thailand holds its breath to see when and where the flooding will hit next, as masses of flood water pours into Bangkok. As I have reported before, we have been assured by Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, that Bangkok’s city centre will not flood. However, as a precautionary measure sandbags were being put out today along Sukhumvit Road and other areas. (more…)

Something Sexy For The Weekend Part 5

Double Trouble - Better stock up on booze 'n' babes!

Another selection of Hot Thai Girls in something sexy for the weekend part 5. Please also not that the Gallery Page has had a massive update with over 100 new hot pics added.    The flooding in Thailand has now become global news with stories on CNN and the BBC.  Over 200 people have been killed and the situation is very bad in some of the provinces, especially Ayutthaya.  The big question on everyone’s mind is will Bangkok flood?   If you were out on Soi Cowboy or Nana Plaza last night you would not think so, most of the bars were busy and Soi Cowboy looked somewhat like the Mardi Gras!

The situation in Bangkok is supposed to reach its most serious between Oct 16 and 18 when the northern water-flow, combined with the high tide and projected heavy rainfall could cause severe flooding in the city.  The areas most at risk will be on the Eastern part of the river; Min Buri, Nong Chok, Lat Krabang and Klong Sam Wa districts.  I remember when Sukhumvit Road flooded  20 odd years ago, it was crazy with abandoned cars and sandbags outside all the shop fronts. So will we see a repeat of  that?  The experts think it will NOT affect central Bangkok, but it might be worth stocking up on booze ‘n’ babes just in case!

Wayward School Girls Night At Bar Fly

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

naughty_thai_schoolgirl  Bar Fly Hosts School Girls Theme Night September 22

Bar Fly will host another theme night tonight, this time it’s ‘Wayward Schoolgirls.’ Ron the owner will be in attendance, as well as the usual line-up of attractive hostesses, plus a free feeding frenzy! Ron claims his beer is the coldest in Bangkok and I must agree the beers are definitely very cold! With some naughty schoolgirls thrown in it should be an enjoyable night.

I have often said that Soi 33 which has a lot of bars named after dead artists is dead itself.  But, that is not completely true.  The Office Bar is still popular with resident expats and Mojo’s has some HOT coyote dancers.  Bar Fly is a great place to chill out and Tenderloins seems to be as popular as ever. If you don’t like the mayhem and madness of lower Sukhumvit, up on Soi 33 is an alternative to the hustle and bustle. Bar Fly is located on Sukhumvit Soi 33 just past the Novotel, before Tenderloins Restaurant on the left-hand side.

Toby my webmaster is off to Cambodia again muttering something about Thailand 20 years ago. He promises to come back with a full update on the current nightlife scene, hence the delay in the post on Cambodia Nightlife.

Early closing is still in place at some clubs but I hear the new look Spicy is now rocking until 6:00am.

Thanks for visiting and stay tuned for more nightlife updates very soon…

Something Sexy For The Weekend Part 4

Sunday, September 11th, 2011

something_sexy12Back by popular demand another edition of Something Sexy For The Weekend.  Not to be confused with ‘dirty weekend’ which we know is what some guys will have in mind, when they view the photos of these very HOT Thai girls.  The after hours action in Bangkok has been curbed lately by the early closing times and the annual monsoon which gave us another pounding on Friday.  Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy seem to be weathering the storm and the popular beer bars and go-go bars have remained crowded.  I urge you to check out DC10 situated on the middle level in Nana Plaza as that is now under new management.  Also, for the die hard guys on a booze cruise it is worth noting that alcohol is still being served by the street vendors on Sukhumvit between Soi 3 and Soi 19. The pavement pubs are getting a boost from the enforced early closing.

After Hours Clubs In Bangkok

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

thai_girls_go_wildDusk Till Dawn

The after hours scene is constantly changing in Bangkok.  I remember a few years back when the Tunnel on Luang Suan was very popular, but that nightclub closed down.  One of the main places  for years now has been Spicy on Ron Mueang Soi 1 (off soi 5). It is a large venue that is open till around 6am.  Across the Street is the latest popular after hours nightspot Swing.  It opens late and carries on until midday!  So, it’s great for serious party animals. The downside is it’s small and can get packed. Furthermore, it can get too smokey.

Other popular late-night clubs include Climax Club on Sukhumvit Soi 11. The entrance is through the car park of the Ambassador Hotel. This club has live bands, which are pretty good. Climax is a popular place to party through the night. Open (usually) until 6am, it gets a number of Thai girls freelancing after the bars close at around 2am. Climax Club is one of those places that you will either love or loathe.

Latest on Bangkok Music Station

It appears Tenderloins the long established great steak restaurant on Soi 33 will be moving from its current location and taking over the Music Station.  The manager told me they expect to move in the next month or so as soon as they have fitted out the new place.  We look forward to enjoying their infamous Aussie steaks at the new location.
