Thailand Night Fever

Hi Guys, I have some good news for you.  This week I will start to introduce some new images.  I am sure the eagle-eyed among you will spot those in a split second.  New photographs are being introduced as we speak.  Whoopee!

After Dark Asia Volume 5 Thailand - Thailand Night FeverJust when you think everything is going smoothly, something unexpected happens.  Welcome to Amazing Thailand!  After Dark Asia Volume 5 was due to be on the newsstands last week.  However, the printers made several critical errors and the magazine had to be reprinted.  Thankfully, the latest edition of After Dark Asia is now on the numerous newsstands around Bangkok and Pattaya.  One of the producers of After Dark Asia told me that running a girly bar would be easier than running a girly magazine in Thailand.  Enjoy!

Following careful consideration, the After Dark Asia Dance Contest has been put back one week.  This is to allow the organisers more time to prepare for the event.  It will still be held in Hammer Disco, but the new date is January 22nd.  With the event starting at the strange time of 1:00am, it is the morning of January 23rd.  Are you confused enough yet?

The Thai government are talking about a public smoking ban being introduced on February 11th, 2008.  This would mean that all bars, discos, nightclubs and restaurants would have to abide by the new law.  Finally, it appears that the Thais want to follow the western world’s lead.  It is probably a good thing for all concerned, but we cannot be sure what will happen.  For instance, will the smoking ban be enforced nationwide?  With Thailand being Thailand, we will never know for sure until the moment arrives.  Sorry that I cannot be clearer than that, but in Amazing Thailand, even the natives are often left clueless!

But, in saying that they do sound serious about this issue.  Why should non-smokers have to constantly inhale cigarette and cigar smoke?  Personally speaking, I will welcome the public smoking ban and hope that it is fully enforced by the Thai authorities.

The Thai authorities are warning that offenders will be fined 2,000 baht, but the establishment can be fined 20,000 Baht.  Whoa!  That is a serious amount of cash.  Mind you, as I say, let us see what happens before we jump to conclusions.   As always, I will do my best to keep you informed.

The future continues to look extremely bleak for the US Dollar, as the Thai baht reaches an incredible 10-year high.  The weakening greenback leaves many people very concerned.  There are some unhappy Americans in Thailand wondering what the hell is happening.  Some Americans are moaning and groaning, and they are wrongly blaming the Thais.  One American tried to tell me it was the bargirls’ fault for charging too much.  On this occasion, it was clearly a case of blaming the wrong Bush!

tiger beer - Thailand Night FeverThe tremendously talented Thai pop rock star Sek Loso, will be performing live in Hillary 2 Bar in Soi Nana.  Hillary 2 Bar is situated just down past Dynasty Inn, on the left-hand side.  It is directly opposite Hanrahan’s Irish Pub.  The concert will be held on Saturday, February 2nd.  Due to the popularity of “Hi-So Loso”, it is advisable to book tickets prior to the evening.  You can enquire about tickets in Hillary Bar (Soi Nana or Sukhumvit, Soi 11), Hillary 2 Bar, Morning Night Bar, or Spice Club (Ambassador Hotel, Sukhumvit, Soi 11).  Loso, who has appeared live with Thai pop legend Bird, has a large farang following.  Khun Sek is aware of this and even sings a few songs in English.

I have not given an update about the entertainment establishment closing times across Thailand for a while.  Here is a brief summary:-

BANGKOK — Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy close between 2:00am and 2:30am nightly, and Patpong close between 2:00am and 3:00am.  Angels Disco (Nana Hotel Disco) closes at 3:00am.  The cluster of bars around the Soi Nana/Soi 6 junction is open until 5:00am-6:00am.  In addition, in Soi Nana the rooftop garden bar in Sin Club is open again for a nightcap. The ever-popular Spice Club located in the basement of Ambassador Hotel on Sukhumvit, Soi 11 is also open until 5:00am-6:00am.  A truly pulsating place, full of bargirls who want to shake their stuff.  A very trendy nightclub is The Tunnel, which is located in Luang Suan Soi 5.  Monday to Thursday there is a 300 Baht entrance charge, but this does include one drink of your choice.  Friday to Sunday the entrance charge increases to 500 Baht, but this includes two drinks of your choice.  Currently, The Tunnel is open until 6:00am on most nights.  Occasionally the boys in brown close The Tunnel earlier, but fortunately this does not happen very often.

Hollywood Disco in the Ratchada area is open until about 4:00am on Fridays and Saturdays.  Hollywood has mostly a Thai clientele, but farangs are welcome.

*Remember that some Bangkok nightclubs require original ID, or entrance will be refused.  However, this only applies to the more upmarket nightclubs.*

PATTAYA — Numerous beer bars are open 24 hours with two, or three shifts of staff.  However, in remote areas too far away from Walking Street, these types of bars see very little trade.  The selection of bars all clustered together is just too vast to allow them all to do a decent amount of trade.  But, for the “Billy Bunters” (punters) there is a great selection of bars for those on a booze cruise!

The go-go bars in Pattaya can open as late as 3:00am – 4:00am, but some will close beforehand, due to lack of customers and/or bargirls.  The great thing about Pleasure Playground is that there are varieties of late night discos and clubs that are open until dawn.  Here are the hot spots on Walking Street – Lucifer’s, Tony’s, Marine Disco and Secrets Club (Soi 14).  Hammer Disco is open until dawn and is situated between Soi 14 and Soi Diamond on the upper level.  Insomnia Nightclub in Soi Marine Plaza also opens until 6:00am, and *please note* that Insomnia is a popular late night hang out for bargirls.  Fashion Club is the new name for what was formerly Slim.  The refurbished, upscale Fashion Club is located between Soi 4 and Soi 6 in North Pattaya.  Fashion Club is geared more to an upmarket Asian clientele, but it is a classy club.  To see how classy Fashion Club is, just look at some of the cars in the car park!  Fashion Club is Russian owned.

One of the last pit stops for some late night revellers is JP Bar outside of the Blues Factory on Walking Street.  If you are still standing, JP Bar is open until 9:00am.

PHUKET — Following a review of the entertainment establishment closing times, it was decided that bars are now permitted stay open as late as 4:00am in Phuket.  Chicago Music Café, Living Room 1 and Living Room 2 (Bangla Road, Patong Beach), are three examples of popular bars that are open until 4:00am.  Some discos and clubs are open as late as 5:00am — 6:00am.

“I thought I was a terrific lover until I found out my girlfriend suffers from acute asthma!”  (Dave The Rave 2008).

The popular and efficiently run Subway sandwich franchise, still offer their daily super saver.  It is an ideal meal, where you can eat in, or takeaway.  Subway is good for the more health conscious among us, and great value-for-money too!

Sub Of The Day — The 6-inch daily special is ONLY 69 Baht!

MONDAY — Ham, TUESDAY — Spicy Italian, WEDNESDAY — Sliced Chicken, THURSDAY — Pizza Sub, FRIDAY — Tuna, SATURDAY — Sliced Chicken & Ham, SUNDAY — Bacon, Lettuce, & Tomato… Enjoy!

Once again, we peak through the bamboo curtain into the neon jungle of Nana Plaza…

Angelwitch Showgirls Nana Plaza Loy Kratong Bangkok 2007 - Thailand Night FeverAfter a white-knuckle ride as pillion passenger on a motorbike taxi, I arrived into Soi Nana a little shaken but not stirred.  The traffic is more intense in the late afternoon and the motorbike taxi boy was erratically swerving in and out of several streams of traffic.  Well anyway, at least I arrived in one piece!  It was the afternoon of the New Year Staff Meeting in Angelwitch Go-Go Bar.  Yes, surprisingly, some go-go bars still hold monthly staff meetings.  Perhaps some of you were not aware that we even hold staff meetings.  The purpose is to inform the staff of any important events, any changes being introduced, train the staff via verbal instructions, and to reinforce the bar rules wherever necessary.  The meeting is spiced up with Thai humour, but the staff meetings do tend to drag on.  I just wonder how much is absorbed by those with limited attention spans.  In fact, following several hours of instructions, do the bargirls remember anything at all?  Anyway, shut up Dave The Rave, because the meeting has started…

Finally, it turned out to be a great meeting because both Bosses congratulated everybody on doing a superb job throughout 2007.  And, why wouldn’t they?  Because, it was Angelwitch’s most successful year on record.  Then, the good part started.  MONEY, MONEY, MONEY!  It was lucky draw time.  Matt and Khun Pim, very generously handed out a lot of cash in a special New Year lottery draw.  When the top prize was handed out, two members of staff were lucky enough to receive 10,000 baht each.  Furthermore, several runners up received 8,000 Baht and 5,000 Baht each.  As you can imagine, there was a room full of excited Thais, eagerly awaiting the numbers to be called out.  The winners were like excited children on Christmas Day.  Bless them!

After the lucky draw was over it was time to party.  Several bottles of whisky were handed out to the staff and the party started.  Not every go-go bar owner in Nana Plaza is as mean-spirited as you may assume.  If you show your appreciation to your staff, they will usually stay loyal to your establishment.  The moral of the story is that some bar owners do show their appreciation to their team.  It comes as no surprise that the most generous go-go bar owners are nearly always the most successful.

We are fully aware that it is the “silly season” in Thailand and you do get some right buffoons.  However, a strict rule in any (sensible) go-go bar is, “NO MEN ON STAGE!”  Now, how difficult is that to understand?  But, as you know, there is always one idiot.  What heterosexual male in their right mind wants to look at a farang man dancing, or stripping on a go-go stage?  It should be a no brainer, but unfortunately, it does happen from time to time.  Furthermore, there is the safety factor to consider.  Some stages are quite high and a drunken farang could seriously injure himself, or others in a nasty fall.  What if a paralytic farang sends a go-go dancer flying off the stage?  You should NEVER EVER encourage this kind of behaviour.  Once again, if a newcomer arrives, please remind them of the Go-Go Guru’s Bar Code.

I know I have already covered this subject.  However, the tourists are arriving in droves and the “silly season” is well and truly underway.  More and more people insist on trying to take photos in the go-go bars.  The amount of times customers are trying to take photos is getting far too frequent.  Sad to say, that in my 10 years experience as the Go-Go Guru, I have seen some very nasty incidents.  The Thais see this as a serious issue and therefore, it is not worth the hassle.

The modern menace for the go-go bars is the mobile phone.  Some of the new cell phones have super little cameras.  While we are on the subject of mobile phones, do not hold them up high.  This will only make the Thais suspect that you are taking a photo, or shooting video footage.  Do not take any photos, or videos of the go-go dancers.  To play it safe, do not take any photos, or videos inside the go-go bars at all.  The only exception to the rule is if you get permission from the management.

I am aware that many of you know this, but some people just cannot help themselves.  Also, do not try to film, or photograph Thai girls back in your room, unless permission from the girl has been given.  Some farangs are playing with fire if they think that it is fine to photograph, or film any Thai woman without her consent.  Many bargirls are “connected” and your life may never be the same if you abuse a Thai woman.  Whoever you may think you are remember that you are on foreign soil.

The Irish Army have finally landed in the Gulf.  News reports say that the people of Mexico are completely baffled.

The English Premier League Champions Manchester United absolutely thrashed Newcastle United.  All of the goals were scored in the second half, which resulted in a 6-0 annihilation.  Newcastle United do not need a manager, they need a bloody miracle!

The manager of Liverpool Football Club was asked why he changes his team so often.  Mr. Benitez replied, “To keep the burglars on their toes.”

Pretty Lady Go-Go Bar is located on the ground level in Nana Plaza, right next to Voodoo Go-Go Bar.  Happy Hour runs from when the doors open until 9:00pm.  During Happy Hour, drinks are ONLY 80 Baht.  I think this is a very good drinks deal for a go-go bar in Nana Plaza.

Regarding the bar itself, it could definitely do with some modifications.  The mirror tabletop is damaged and brown masking tape covers the cracked areas.  The music was a good mixture of pop and rock, but the speakers were churning out sheer distortion.  The sound system is well past its sell by date.  In fact, I think they still have the same speakers from when Dave The Rave was running Pretty Lady 10 years ago.

The go-go dancers wear tartan coloured outfits.  They comprise of a top and a mini skirt.  There is plenty of flirting and flashing going on down below.  At one point, I thought that one of the go-go dancers was going to sit on my friend’s head.   It was a narrow escape for the Dirty Doctor!  Mind you, he did seem rather engrossed with the view.  I spotted about three cute dolly birds, but the quantity and quality of the line-up has decreased since I last visited.  I think Pretty Lady needs some improvements, but some of the “naughty but nice” go-go dancers, still make it worth visiting.  Good Happy Hours are a rarity in Nana Plaza nowadays, so this is an added bonus for Pretty Lady.

  1. Lots of fun stuff to read in this week’s posting, Dave. Last trip a Pretty Lady dancer laid her naked pussy right on top of my mouth, probably trying to stop me from drinking my 80 baht beer! What a place.

    See you in two weeks,

    – Geoff

Gord bless ya guvner, ain’t only the dollar whats in trouble. Poor old British pound is looking a bit knackered now. Interesting stuff, what effect will this have on the entertainment inflation in Bangkok ? Don’t care meself, never get involved wiv bar girls, looks like a mugs game to me. Methinks the only guys paying top dollar will be Germans and Japs, amd if that’s what the girls want, good luck to ’em. You gets what yer paid for and they be the 2 kinkiest nations on earth !! Will be over in May, pop into Angelwitch and have a good larf wiv the fat old mamsaan, like I have before. She’s a peach, and some of the waitresses. Have to say some of the booze prices are becoming a bit of a joke though. Why put up prices when the world is on the brink of a recession ?

  3. John says:

I for one am looking forward to the smoking ban. I am most certainly tired of exiting a bar or not even entering because of too much smoke. On more times than I can count I have seen sections of bars empty as customers call for their check bin when someone lights a cigar. Getting burned by some idiot on a disco dance floor or having a new hole in your clothes sucks big time. I hope the smokers come to realize they are a disgusting lot and get some professional help in quiting.

  4. Star says:

Hi Dave, would you like to expand on your comment that some of the girls are connected?

  5. Hi Geoff, thanks for those kind words, I am pleased that you enjoy my blog.  It can be a lot of fun in Pretty Lady, but they do need more attractive dancers.  However, the 80 Baht Happy Hour is a bonus!  I look forward to catching up with you soon.  Cheers!

Hi Ketkonen, with the British pound you still cash in more than DOUBLE what the US Dollar does, don’t forget that.  The level that the drink prices have gone up to is still a joke compared to Extortionate England.  You will still pay less for a beer in a go-go bar in Bangkok than you would in a pub in London.  Also, some farang strip clubs will charge you 20 pounds just to enter the place.  Remember that there is NO COVER CHARGE to enter the go-go bars in Thailand.  Nightclubs in the Midlands, UK now charge 3 pounds 60 pence for a bottle of Budweiser.  Also remember, there are no stunning go-go dancers either.  Don’t worry Big Mamma will be waiting for you in Angelwitch.  That’s a whole lotta Thai woman to love!

Hi John, I totally agree with you 100% on the smoking issue.  Let us non-smokers hope that it is enforced widespread.  We will know on February 11th.  That is, if it really does happen… after all, we are in the Land Of Make-Believe!

Hi Star, when bargirls do the job they that do, they are being street smart if they know a few Thai policemen and/or mafia guys.  Also, some of the girls could well have relatives in the Royal Thai Police, or in the Armed Forces.  By being “connected” I mean they have what us farangs call “home advantage.”  Any foreigner who tries to hurt, or abuse a Thai girl will hopefully get what he deserves.  Who wants to take on the Thais?  We are outnumbered by multiple millions!

  6. Greg says:

Hello Dave, it’s the Greg half from the old Kevin and Greg team from the old days.  Glad to see you doing so well!!!  Just wanted to say happy new year to you.  I will see you soon when I am in BKK next month.  Spend almost all my time in Hua Hin.  WOW…that 10 years went by fast. Warm regards to you.

  7. Hi Greg, time sure does fly when you are having fun!  Great to hear from you.  Thanks for the message, I look forward to meeting you next month.  In the meantime, take it easy big guy!

You ought to heed the advice of your butty Stickman. Nana is dead Dave. Get out while you can or you’ll be begging for a job at The Big Mango.

  9. Me in Sg says:

Dave, As a mate, and an avid member of the go go bar fraternity (ie a paying customer) I feel that some modulation of your comments is in order….and please ALL out there, take them in the

First of all, Subway food (ie their cold meats and cheese) is more processed than MacDonalds and in MY humble opinion does not offer a healthy alternative to well-chosen Thai food, AND is more expensive (regardless of the value meal of the day). For those visiting Nana Plaza, the burger bar at the entrance or the Noodle soup vendor nearby offer a much better alternative and you can wash it down with a beer at Mad Dogs, Dirty Dogs, Dogs for all, Little Horny Dogs or whatever that bar is called at the entrance to NEP, at the same time as taking in a game of togger (aka football/soccer)and talking to some lovely non-pushy ladies. Oops, well that’s my Saturday night when I’m in town Hic!

Also, BAR CODE — NO MEN ON STAGE….Sorry, but this should read BAR CODE — NO knobheads that get in the way of other people’s entertainment ON STAGE. It really depends on the bar, the girls and customers in it. There are some cracking PARTY bars in all parts of Thailand where dares and the rest of it are part of the fun. The rule is really, ‘this is a stage where our staff perform, it is not a dance floor. ANYBODY that is up here must follow the ettiquette of the establishment, which means entertaining the customers and following the dress code. If our girls are wearing tiny lingerie, so must you. If our staff are wearing ridiculously short skirts and no knickers, so must you. So, take note fat European and Australian women and Bar-fined girls who forget that there are still customers in the bar other than their own! Hic, can you tell I am writing this at 4am?

BY the way, has the Exotic Fruit bar re-opened yet? Do I still have a place reserved in AW?

Se you mid February when Dave the Rave (and Mat) will be splashing out and buying me a birthday drink.

BTW. Anybody who responds angrily to what I have written has already labelled themselves. TTFN

  10. Star says:

McDonalds and KFC food makes me feel sick, so I doubt very much if the former is healthier than Subway, and in fact some people have lost weight merely by limiting themselves to eating Subway sandwiches. Only eat tuna myself so can’t comment on their meats and certainly don’t eat cheese (and I am not Thai). Au Bon Pain tuna sandwiches are better yet than Subway but they are not convenient for the bars. A lot of Thai food is ruined by MSG and the whole noodle industry needs to be shut down otherwise Thai ladies are going to eventually end up like lardarse Italian mama’s.

BTW, talking of men on stage, I recently escorted a couple of Thai lady friends to some gay bars off Surwagonse. They reckoned they would have been raped if they went on their own. Naked dancing with Thai guys sporting strange looking but farang sized members – turns out they were more silicone than flesh, likely to have to have them chopped off ten years down the line to avoid cancer. That was followed by some blow-job shows and then live and very atheletic sodomy shows. Don’t sit near the stage unless you don’t mind semen raining down upon you. Seems to be no restrictions from the plod whatsoever, but then the beer was 200-220 baht a go – and very limited range, Singha and Nam Chee (Heinekin) – and I guess half of that went to the Men in Brown!

Although the bars were supposed to be gay, this being Thailand, the guys mostly went both ways and would just as happily be offed by either sex at 500 baht for short-time. Good for a laugh!

  11. Me in Sg says:

Glad to see nobody took offence at my post ‘last night’ (ie this morning – 4am Singapore time). The way I’m spending money, I might have to take a job in one of those bars Star mentions….but I think it would take considerably more alcohol than I had consumed last night!

BTW, the alcohol blurred my thinking just a little last night. I was trying to suggest that the meat subway uses is not up to real sandwich standard, but absolutely NOT intending to suggest that McD is healthier. I can’t stand Mayonaise, which Tuna is invariably mixed with, otherwise that might be my choice too. Anyway (raising my lite beer) here’s to choosing the food that does it for you!! Cheers!!

  12. Richard says:

Any Farang who thinks it’s funny to get up on stage in a go-go bar really should be discouraged from doing it again.Personally i think they should be taken out back and shot but thats just me.At the very least the music should stop and all the girls leave the stage until the offending “knobhead” gets the message that it just IS’NT FUNNY.

  13. Hi Louis, the “NO PHOTO” issue is a constant problem that the go-go bars have to face.  Yes, you are right in saying that some Thai bars take it seriously.  However, I remember the bouncers in Canadian strip clubs that I visited, they looked mean as hell, just waiting to pounce on a guy who whips out a camera.  In my experience the Western bouncers and the general “NO PHOTO” policy is far less tolerant than the go-go bars in Thailand.

Hi Richard, I agree with you in theory, but shooting customers would not be cool.  LOL!  As for turning the music off, I have used that technique before and then the guy looks a real fool.  One guy was very persistant, so I said over the microphone, “This is NOT a gay bar!”  He soon got off the stage and even his mates had a good laugh at his expense.  These poor, little lost souls just need the attention!

Hi John Smith, I have a large readership and most guys seem very happy with my website.  If you take the time to look back through the archived columns, you will see plenty of mentions for Rainbow 1 and Rainbow 4.  Actually, I am one online columnist who really rates the Rainbow Bars and writes about them.  I even go to the lengths of writing about Soi Cowboy, Patpong, Late night options, special events and promotions, Pattaya and even Phuket from time to time.  I don’t think you have read enough of my writing, so please read through the archives before you judge me so quickly. Also, remember that although I am busy I make the time and effort to provide this free online service.

  14. Star says:

Hi Dave, Was in AW Bangkok last night and disappointed in the shows from 10pm to the break, although the music was pretty good (a bit less bass it would’ve been even better), after which I left as my rule is one beer one bar. As an English bar manager your rep seems to have bought in lots of loud, drunken Brit hooligans though they did go ape when I was there. Not what I would call a world class ambience. Seem to recall that five years ago (plus or minus a year, you don’t expect accuracy, do ya?) the shows were a bit more involved and interesting.

Rainbow One was more stimulating with its excess of gals who all seem to be perfectly rendered in form to suit farang tastes (although there were lots of Asian men there), though as per five years ago they were not very friendly at 9pm. A couple of other bars had plenty of gals but not many customers although they did seem to fill up for a while and then dissipate into the ether.

Very good of the Nana guys to up the price as I only had four beers instead of six, bound to be good for my health! Most thoughtful of ya all!

  15. Star says:

sorry, “did go ape” should read “did not go ape”

  16. Me in Sg says:

    Can’t believe I’m doing this……

Dave, good on you for doing your best to please as many peeps as possible! Am I allowed to include a link to a great site here? Too late, here it is! Talk

    Tee hee! Be happy!!!!

Still working out my travel plans for the next few weeks, but I will be popping by to spend the odd 120B on a beer or three!
