Dave The Rave Update

Friday, May 22nd, 2020

Hello From Sunny Scarborough!

Scarborough UK - Dave The Rave Update

If you are not aware, I had to leave Bangkok, due to the C-19 pandemic and return to England. Just like so many people, the coronavirus outbreak has caused me to lose my business. I had no choice but to leave Thailand, after living in Bangkok for 22 years and repatriate to England.

However, I do intend to keep on blogging, but I do not think there will be regular blog posts, as before. I am currently adapting to life near the famous seaside town of Scarborough in North Yorkshire, England.

Until I get back up to speed, you may want to follow my daily posts on social media. I am active on Facebook HERE and also on Twitter HERE

Nationwide Curfew Commences Friday

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha has announced that a curfew would be imposed from Friday, April 3rd at 22:00 until 04:00 hours.

This is an attempt to prevent the COVID-19 virus spreading, as certain people have not obeyed instructions to stay at home.

Let us all hope this dreaded virus passes sooner than later.

Bangkok Declares State Of Emergency

Tuesday, March 24th, 2020

COVID 19 1 - Bangkok Declares State Of Emergency

Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha has declared a state of emergency due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

It will come into effect from this Thursday. However, an official statement as to what the conditions entail has yet to be announced.

This will mean the Thai authorities will have unprecedented governmental powers. It is thought to include enforcing a curfew and putting restrictions upon domestic and international travel.

According to the Thai government, the COVID-19 in Thailand has now claimed four lives. Until recently there was only one death.

Bangkok Covid-19 Virus Update

Monday, March 23rd, 2020

COVID 19 - Bangkok Covid-19 Virus Update

The Covid-19 outbreak in Bangkok has spiked, forcing the Thai government to seriously consider a lockdown.

Bangkok is already in shutdown mode with shopping malls, bars, nightclubs and restaurants, all closed until at least April 12th.

Recently, the Thai Army was deployed to disinfect Chinatown and Thailand was recently praised for their efforts by the World Health Organisation.

It is the consensus from ground zero that lockdown is not a matter of if but when. With the Covid-19 cases rising it is more inevitable.

NB. Covid-19 is an acronym for Corona Virus Disease 2019

Gov’t Considering Emergency Decree as New 89 Cases Reported

BANGKOK – Emergency decree may be enacted soon to impose a lockdown of Bangkok in a bid to stem the coronavirus epidemic, government sources said Friday. The measure is being discussed just as health officials on Saturday say 89 new cases of confirmed infection were found, a sharp rise from daily tally in recent days.

Bangkok & Pattaya Bar Closures

Tuesday, March 17th, 2020

pattaya walking street 2 - Bangkok & Pattaya Bar Closures

The Thai Prime Minister has made a flip-flop on his statement that the entertainment venues will not have to close. This is in order to prevent the COVID-19 virus from spreading further.

Just two days later he has now stated that all bars and nightclubs in Bangkok and Pattaya, will have to close from March 18th until March 31st.

Stickman recently said about the Thai government that left hand does not know what the right hand is doing and this just proves the point.

Nana Plaza BKK Nites - Bangkok & Pattaya Bar Closures

No doubt this is a devastating blow for entertainment venues in Bangkok and Pattaya. It means multitudes of employees, including the barmy army of bargirls, will most probably be laid off with unpaid leave.

One way around this is entertainment establishments that have restaurant licenses. For example, pubs with restaurant licenses can continue to do trade, which makes a mockery of the whole concept.

There are two questions that remain in my mind. Will this soon include restaurants, public transportation systems and shopping malls? Also, what about the rest of Thailand?

Pattaya to close all entertainment venues, such as bars, nightclubs and massage shops until the end of the month – The Pattaya News

Breaking: We can confirm that the Provincial Government of Banglamung and Chonburi have ordered, effective tomorrow, March 18th, 2020, that all entertainment venues must close until March 31st, 2020. The Pattaya News spoke with the Banglamung Police Chief over the phone this evening and confirmed the information.

Thailand Tourism Turmoil

Sunday, March 8th, 2020

pattaya walking street 2 - Thailand Tourism Turmoil

Thailand’s tourism industry is in turmoil due to the media hype over the coronavirus outbreak. The levels of panic among certain people worldwide created by the media has caused hysteria.

This is severely damaging tourism and also Thailand’s entertainment sector.  No doubt a number of bars, pubs and clubs will be affected, some have already closed as a result.

BANGKOK THAILAND 1 - Thailand Tourism Turmoil

Stickman’s opening article in his weekly column is a collection of opinions and on the ground reports from foreign residents in Thailand. My opinions are among them and you can read it HERE

I still stick by my guns in my previous article entitled, Thailand Gets Knocked Off Its Pedestal  which you can read RIGHT HERE

Thailand Asia - Thailand Tourism Turmoil

Thai Airways has announced over 12 billion baht in losses in 2019 and surely it must be as bad, if not worse this year.

When this scare storm passes, I fear that the damage will be done. The unscrupulous media machine will move on to its next scaremongering campaign. Then Thailand will be left to pick up the pieces of its shattered tourism industry.

Amazing Thailand - Thailand Tourism Turmoil

Mark my words, the media machine will have a lot to answer for regarding the COVID-19 virus scare. Let’s hope this COVID-19 virus soon passes.

However, will the public become any wiser to their devious trickery?

Ten Top Tips After Dark

Thursday, March 5th, 2020

pattaya walking street 2 - Ten Top Tips After Dark

Back in Britain, I was a professional personal protection specialist. I have conducted seminars and presentations with the British Police Force for community safety.

Below are Ten Top Tips for general personal protection after dark. Most of these guidelines are common sense but logical thinking is often ignored when people drink alcohol…

(1) Do carry enough money for the evening or have a credit card, as a backup. There are plenty of available ATM machines so you have no excuses. Running out of cash is not only embarrassing it can land you in jail.

(2) Don’t carry valuables after dark or wear flashy jewellery. This includes your passport and extra credit cards. Just take what you will need to use that night. The less you carry the less you can lose.

(3) Do keep an eye on your bar bill. Check what is going on it and be aware of the total. You do not want to rack up a big bar bill and not be able to pay it. This is why it is a good idea to carry your credit card if you overspend.

(4) Don’t leave your friend alone if they are very drunk. You won’t forgive yourself if they get mugged or worse. Remember, there is safety in numbers, especially in a strange place.

(5) Do keep an eye on your drinks. It’s easy to slip drugs into unattended drinks. If you need to leave your drink, either finish it or order a new one when you return.

(6) Don’t walk in dark or secluded areas. Stick to well-lit public areas or get a taxi if it is late at night. Muggings do happen in Thailand.

(7) Do have plenty of small banknotes to prevent being short-changed. You can easily break a few big bills at one of the multitudes of convenience stores. Alternatively, you can get a bundle of small baht bills at a bank.

(8) Don’t carry your wallet or phone in your back pocket. Pickpockets do operate in Thailand so don’t give them the opportunity. Consider wearing a money belt if you do carry lots of cash after dark.

(9) Do enjoy yourself; by all means, be happy and friendly. Just be street smart and remain switched on at all times.

(10)  Don’t ignore your intuition. Trust your instincts if you feel something is not right. Remember your ‘Stranger Danger’ lessons as a kid. Move on to the next entertainment establishment if you don’t like the vibe. It’s better to be safe than sorry and besides, there are many other venues.

How To Play The GoGo Game

Sunday, February 23rd, 2020

Preface – Most of this following advice is for those who are not familiar with a certain gogo bar or red-light district in Bangkok or Pattaya. However, even experienced guys need reminders from time to time. The go-go bars are like any other business, the ultimate goal is to make money. The go-go dancers are not upon the stage for the goodness of their health. Bearing this in mind, if you think Thai gogo bars are mercenary, then visit the strip joints in Farangland for a reality check. I wish you happy hunting!

Know Your Game Plan — You should have a game plan before you enter any go-go bar. Remember, it’s your time and your money. You are calling the shots, so never forget that important fact. If for any reason you do not like the venue you can simply leave, as long as you have paid your bar bill. Firstly, see if the venue suits your needs before you commit yourself. The bar cannot charge you for looking! Any go-go bar is either busy or empty for a reason. Remember this before you decide to sit down. Here are my guidelines to help you create your gogo game plan…

Billboard Bangkok 16 - How To Play The GoGo Game

Do Not Burn Your Bridges — If for any reason you feel angry, it is better to walk away than cause a scene. Use the 24-hour rule; leave and assess the situation when you have cooled down. You may have had too much to drink, there may have been a misunderstanding and more importantly, you may want to return to that go-go bar. Furthermore, you certainly don’t want to start a fight, as you will be surrounded like General Custer! Believe me, just walk away, as it really is not worth the trouble. There are plenty of other gogo bars, so no reason you can’t have a good time.

Look Before You Leap — Take your time before selecting your lady of the night. A common mistake is to go for the first girl you see or the first girl who approaches you. She may well be the biggest hustler in the place! Wait until you have seen all the girls or you may regret it later. Therefore, there may well be hotter girls available, so hold your horses. Do not be rushed into a decision by a pushy mamasan or go-go dancer. In fact, it is better to cut out the middleman altogether. Why do you need somebody else to tell you what you like?  You pick the girl, not the other way around.

Spankys Bangkok 5 - How To Play The GoGo Game

Rules Of Engagement — They say all is fair in love and war. Well, this certainly applies to the business of booze and babes! Part of playing any game is knowing the rules. What are the drink and bar fine prices? If you don’t know then ask, don’t try to fly blind or you may well crash and burn. Before you start buying loads of drinks, how much does she charge? If you think a strip club is a lonely-hearts club you are in for a big shock buddy!

Show You Know — Show you know the game, show them the banknotes (literally) and show you are in control of the situation. The persona you portray is important, as Thais read body language well, so show you are assertive and confident. Any dodgy Thais intent on cheating you will most probably leave you alone and go after an easier target. Show them you know the go-go game and be prepared to stick by your guns.

Butterflies Bangkok 7 - How To Play The GoGo Game

Be The Boss — My final top tip is to be the boss. Certain bar girls are hardcore hookers, who are masters of manipulation. Did you know some top gogo dancers can earn 100,000 to 300,000 baht per month? Don’t let them gauge you for cash, they might make more money than you do. Don’t be scared to refuse them when they get too greedy. Just remember whose money it is and remain the boss. You have every right to spend your time and money how you want. After all, the customer is supposed to be king.

Epilogue — During the golden years, I ran both Hollywood Bars, Angelwitch Rock Dancers and Billboard Bar, which were among the most popular gogo bars in Thailand. Nowadays, I see so many problems with numerous gogo bars; they are inundated with issues both internal and external. Therefore, I feel my guidelines for you are more essential now than ever before. Armed with this advice, there is no reason you cannot have a great time in the gogo bars of Thailand. You just need to know how to play the gogo game.

Great Time To Visit Thailand

Sunday, February 16th, 2020

Pattaya Beach 2020 - Great Time To Visit Thailand

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, many Asian tourists are currently not visiting Thailand. The drop in Asian visitors is visually very noticeable and the financial impact on the tourism industry is severe.

Last year there were over 10 million visitors from China. One estimation is that number will drop by 80% or more this year. This is already having a domino effect around the Asia region.

When I visited Pattaya in January, I was the only Westerner on the beach, amid people from various parts of Asia. Right now, there is possibly a scattering of Eastern Europeans and the rest are probably from India.

PATTAYA JANUARY 2020 324 1 - Great Time To Visit Thailand

Unfortunately, the Thai baht is still too strong against foreign currencies. This alone stops numerous farangs and alike from visiting.  I dare say there are a number of potential visitors sitting on the fence.

However, in saying that it is a great time to visit Thailand because flights and hotels cost less now. If you shop around on websites like Agoda you will find some great hotel deals, especially places such as Pattaya.

Another good reason to visit is the airports, hotels, beaches, tourist attractions, shopping malls, nightlife areas and public transportation, will be much less crowded. If you like space it’s an ideal time to visit Thailand

Hotels are cheaper, the traffic better and maybe even the service has improved now that Pattaya’s Chinese golden goose has flown the coop. With China banning overseas tours in an effort to combat spread of the coronavirus, Pattaya has taken on the feel of low season even though the calendar says it should still be …

Le Pub Pattaya

Le Pub Pattaya 3 - Le Pub Pattaya

Le Pub is a cosy hole-in-the-wall bar, located inside the alleyway on Soi Diamond just off the infamous Walking Street.

Owned and ran by the charismatic Mister Egg, it is a great place to play pool, enjoy a full range of bar snacks and chillax, amid the mayhem of Sin City.

Le Pub shows Live Sports on BIG 75 inch LED screens. However, this is contrary to the Le Pub motto, ‘Not A Sports Bar.’

There is a cutting edge music video system, with a musical library brimming with classics from bygone decades. The playlist features an eclectic selection of songs from the 1970s to the present day.  This I feel is a unique feature of Le Pub and makes it stand out from the other bars.

Le Pub is also said to have the coldest drinks and aircon on Walking Street if not Pattaya. Recently, Le Pub has started stocking Federbrau Beer, which is a tasty German single malt lager. Cheers!

Monday, January 27th 2020

The popular Robin Hood Tavern is celebrating its 3rd anniversary. The party kicks off tonight from 6:30 pm, until some ungodly hour.

Despite being only three years old, believe me, it is no toddler! Robin Hood has made an impact and is a great addition to Pattaya’s pub scene.

For those who are unaware Robin Hood Tavern is located in The Avenue Mall on Second Road in Pattaya City.

The generous guys at Robin Hood are offering a Free Barbecue for paying customers. I know for a fact, the pub grub is great bang-for-baht and the management run a tight tavern.

DJ Rich Mander will be spinning the tunes and comedian Jimmy Bright will be spinning the one-liners!

Former World Boxing Champion Ricky Hatton will, be attending with friends.

Pattaya Photo Gallery January 2020

Thursday, January 23rd, 2020

PATTAYA JANUARY 2020 333 1024x682 - Pattaya Photo Gallery January 2020

I just got back to Bangkok from an enjoyable two day trip to Pattaya. I thought you might appreciate a Photo Gallery to show you what it looks like these days. I think Pattaya is an acquired taste, so I will let you decide whether you want to visit or not. I make suggestions but I am certainly not pretentious enough to tell you what you like. 🙂

I took the bus to Pattaya from the station opposite BTS Ekamai and it only cost me 119 baht. You know what mate, the motorbike taxi ride to the bus station cost me more! If you are on a budget take the bus, otherwise barter a taxi ride for around 1,000 baht. Thailand is not expensive if you let Dave The Rave guide you!

I first visited Pattaya in May 1988 during a scorching hot season. Now, fast forward to 2020 and I still enjoy visiting Pattaya, even after all these years. Of course, a lot has to do with the fact I am a Thailand Nightlife Guru but nevertheless, I genuinely like Pattaya; albeit in small portions.

The intense furnace heat of Bangkok can and does wear you down. Believe me, I know I have lived here since 1999 and even the Thais complain about the heat.  Therefore, a visit to Pattaya gets me out of the furnace of the Big Mango to enjoy a (somewhat slightly) cooler climate.

I enjoyed staying at Robin’s Nest on Soi Diana, as I always do whenever I visit Sex-On-Sea. They run a tight ship at Robin’s Nest Pub but it retains a relaxed, pleasant atmosphere. Considering  Pattaya can be rather rough ‘n’ ready, they maintain high standards. Believe me, I have seen some dumps in my 30+ years here! Robin’s Nest has clean, comfortable rooms, great pub grub and live sports.

One positive thing about the beer bars and gogo bars in Pattaya is that they offer so many Happy Hours. If you are on a Booze Cruise the best gogo bar Happy Hour is 55 Baht Bottled Beers at Pandoras GoG0 Bar in Soi LK Metro. In addition, don’t miss Sapphire Super Sunday with Happy Hour prices all night at Sapphire Club in Soi 15 Walking Street. Also on Walking Street, Pin-Up Agogo offers a 90 Baht Happy Hour. These are just a few examples of the multitudes of Happy Hours in Sin City.

Without further ado here’s my Pattaya Photo Gallery!

We’re Not A Mom And Pop Store!

Thursday, January 16th, 2020

Nana Plaza 2019 2 - We’re Not A Mom And Pop Store!

NANA ENTERTAINMENT PLAZA BANGKOK

I remember attending a meeting at the command centre of the Nana Group in Bangkok. Glen, the head honcho of this large go-go bar group said to us, “We’re not a mom and pop store.” Now, being a Brit, this was the first time I heard this expression. It was explained to me that in the backwater towns in America, these were small shops ran by an old couple, or alternatively, it was a similar small family business. It is an expression that ‘feels’ as old as the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia!

You probably do not consider your business, as a mom and pop store and rightly so, because it’s an insult to your accomplishments. But, it might surprise you to know that some of the most successful businesses in the world, started out that way. Just look at those young punks playing around in a garage. I bet some people thought, while everybody else is partying, boozing and shagging, “What the hell are these losers doing?” Thankfully, this bunch of ‘losers’ stuck at it because it became the catalyst for Microsoft and Apple. Don’t ever forget that from small acorns mighty oak trees grow!

Hey guys, what would most of us be doing right now without Microsoft and Apple? You must be on your computer or mobile phone in order to read this right now.  They have my ultimate respect, as pioneers of such an enormous technological triumph. I take my iHat off to them 🙂

Angelwitch Bangkok 4 - We’re Not A Mom And Pop Store!

“ANNIE” @ ANGELWITCH GO-GO BAR NANA PLAZA BANGKOK

While attending a Monthly Staff Meeting at Angelwitch Go-Go Bar in Nana Plaza, I stood up and said to a sea of Thai faces, “We are ‘kropkrua’ (family) and we should never forget this.” The bar owner Pim immediately jumped in and went on to remind the staff of deep-rooted Thai family values. To make everybody think and feel like a family is essential to the success of many businesses in Thailand. This is why the ‘mom and pop store’ saying has another meaning in terms of the Thai way of running a bar business.

The tradition of the Monthly Staff Meeting in bars is rather old fashioned now, but it was an ideal way to communicate with your ‘family’ or team. The great big carrot on the stick is that they are paid their salary. The bar bosses could relay any important news and even throw a party. I remember at Pretty Lady and Angelwitch, they gave the staff food and drink, even training them in better customer care methods. Pim went so far as to teach dance moves to her Angelwitch go-go dancers and Showgirls. It was an all-in-one multi-purpose meeting. The downside is that many bargirls have the attention span of a goldfish. But, in their defence, some of these meetings went on for hours and they seemed more like conferences.

I recall Kip, the general manager of the Nana Group saying, “I have called this meeting to tell you there will be no more meetings.” Well, that cracked me up, what a great one-liner!

The creator of the Angelwitch concept Matt started out in a small bar called Tony’s in Soi Cowboy. The fact is an establishment such as Tony’s Bar was indeed a mom and pop store, compared to the multimillion-baht go-go bars. The likes of Bacarra and the Rainbow Bars were on a very different level. The difference between Tony’s Bar and Angelwitch Bar (besides the obvious) in terms of the bar biz is like comparing a mom and pop store and a large supermarket. However, many of the same principles and operating systems, applied to both bars, even though the scale was so vastly different.

Being an old fashioned and traditional guy myself, I wish some of those mom and pop family values, were still around today. Modernisation in today’s society and business is inevitable but it is not always for the better.
