Dave The Rave Update

Friday, May 22nd, 2020

Hello From Sunny Scarborough!

Scarborough UK - Dave The Rave Update

If you are not aware, I had to leave Bangkok, due to the C-19 pandemic and return to England. Just like so many people, the coronavirus outbreak has caused me to lose my business. I had no choice but to leave Thailand, after living in Bangkok for 22 years and repatriate to England.

However, I do intend to keep on blogging, but I do not think there will be regular blog posts, as before. I am currently adapting to life near the famous seaside town of Scarborough in North Yorkshire, England.

Until I get back up to speed, you may want to follow my daily posts on social media. I am active on Facebook HERE and also on Twitter HERE

Thailand Imposes Curfew

Thursday, April 2nd, 2020

Nationwide Curfew Commences Friday

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha has announced that a curfew would be imposed from Friday, April 3rd at 22:00 until 04:00 hours.

This is an attempt to prevent the COVID-19 virus spreading, as certain people have not obeyed instructions to stay at home.

Let us all hope this dreaded virus passes sooner than later.

Bangkok Covid-19 Virus Update

Monday, March 23rd, 2020

COVID 19 - Bangkok Covid-19 Virus Update

The Covid-19 outbreak in Bangkok has spiked, forcing the Thai government to seriously consider a lockdown.

Bangkok is already in shutdown mode with shopping malls, bars, nightclubs and restaurants, all closed until at least April 12th.

Recently, the Thai Army was deployed to disinfect Chinatown and Thailand was recently praised for their efforts by the World Health Organisation.

It is the consensus from ground zero that lockdown is not a matter of if but when. With the Covid-19 cases rising it is more inevitable.

NB. Covid-19 is an acronym for Corona Virus Disease 2019

Gov’t Considering Emergency Decree as New 89 Cases Reported

BANGKOK – Emergency decree may be enacted soon to impose a lockdown of Bangkok in a bid to stem the coronavirus epidemic, government sources said Friday. The measure is being discussed just as health officials on Saturday say 89 new cases of confirmed infection were found, a sharp rise from daily tally in recent days.

Bangkok Coronavirus Update

The Game Bangkok 3 - Bangkok Coronavirus Update

As you are probably aware, almost all of the bars and nightclubs are closed in Bangkok and Pattaya. This is to prevent the Coronavirus from spreading further. It’s probably wise at this stage but nobody knows how long the bars will stay shut.

However, certain pubs (but not all), can open until midnight. Three of them are The Game Pub (Sukhumvit Soi 9), The Oasis Pub (Soi Cowboy) and The Old English Pub (Sukhumvit Soi 55).

Bangkok & Pattaya Bar Closures

Tuesday, March 17th, 2020

pattaya walking street 2 - Bangkok & Pattaya Bar Closures

The Thai Prime Minister has made a flip-flop on his statement that the entertainment venues will not have to close. This is in order to prevent the COVID-19 virus from spreading further.

Just two days later he has now stated that all bars and nightclubs in Bangkok and Pattaya, will have to close from March 18th until March 31st.

Stickman recently said about the Thai government that left hand does not know what the right hand is doing and this just proves the point.

Nana Plaza BKK Nites - Bangkok & Pattaya Bar Closures

No doubt this is a devastating blow for entertainment venues in Bangkok and Pattaya. It means multitudes of employees, including the barmy army of bargirls, will most probably be laid off with unpaid leave.

One way around this is entertainment establishments that have restaurant licenses. For example, pubs with restaurant licenses can continue to do trade, which makes a mockery of the whole concept.

There are two questions that remain in my mind. Will this soon include restaurants, public transportation systems and shopping malls? Also, what about the rest of Thailand?

Pattaya to close all entertainment venues, such as bars, nightclubs and massage shops until the end of the month – The Pattaya News

Breaking: We can confirm that the Provincial Government of Banglamung and Chonburi have ordered, effective tomorrow, March 18th, 2020, that all entertainment venues must close until March 31st, 2020. The Pattaya News spoke with the Banglamung Police Chief over the phone this evening and confirmed the information.

Thailand Tourism Turmoil

Sunday, March 8th, 2020

pattaya walking street 2 - Thailand Tourism Turmoil

Thailand’s tourism industry is in turmoil due to the media hype over the coronavirus outbreak. The levels of panic among certain people worldwide created by the media has caused hysteria.

This is severely damaging tourism and also Thailand’s entertainment sector.  No doubt a number of bars, pubs and clubs will be affected, some have already closed as a result.

BANGKOK THAILAND 1 - Thailand Tourism Turmoil

Stickman’s opening article in his weekly column is a collection of opinions and on the ground reports from foreign residents in Thailand. My opinions are among them and you can read it HERE

I still stick by my guns in my previous article entitled, Thailand Gets Knocked Off Its Pedestal  which you can read RIGHT HERE

Thailand Asia - Thailand Tourism Turmoil

Thai Airways has announced over 12 billion baht in losses in 2019 and surely it must be as bad, if not worse this year.

When this scare storm passes, I fear that the damage will be done. The unscrupulous media machine will move on to its next scaremongering campaign. Then Thailand will be left to pick up the pieces of its shattered tourism industry.

Amazing Thailand - Thailand Tourism Turmoil

Mark my words, the media machine will have a lot to answer for regarding the COVID-19 virus scare. Let’s hope this COVID-19 virus soon passes.

However, will the public become any wiser to their devious trickery?

Ten Top Tips After Dark

Thursday, March 5th, 2020

pattaya walking street 2 - Ten Top Tips After Dark

Back in Britain, I was a professional personal protection specialist. I have conducted seminars and presentations with the British Police Force for community safety.

Below are Ten Top Tips for general personal protection after dark. Most of these guidelines are common sense but logical thinking is often ignored when people drink alcohol…

(1) Do carry enough money for the evening or have a credit card, as a backup. There are plenty of available ATM machines so you have no excuses. Running out of cash is not only embarrassing it can land you in jail.

(2) Don’t carry valuables after dark or wear flashy jewellery. This includes your passport and extra credit cards. Just take what you will need to use that night. The less you carry the less you can lose.

(3) Do keep an eye on your bar bill. Check what is going on it and be aware of the total. You do not want to rack up a big bar bill and not be able to pay it. This is why it is a good idea to carry your credit card if you overspend.

(4) Don’t leave your friend alone if they are very drunk. You won’t forgive yourself if they get mugged or worse. Remember, there is safety in numbers, especially in a strange place.

(5) Do keep an eye on your drinks. It’s easy to slip drugs into unattended drinks. If you need to leave your drink, either finish it or order a new one when you return.

(6) Don’t walk in dark or secluded areas. Stick to well-lit public areas or get a taxi if it is late at night. Muggings do happen in Thailand.

(7) Do have plenty of small banknotes to prevent being short-changed. You can easily break a few big bills at one of the multitudes of convenience stores. Alternatively, you can get a bundle of small baht bills at a bank.

(8) Don’t carry your wallet or phone in your back pocket. Pickpockets do operate in Thailand so don’t give them the opportunity. Consider wearing a money belt if you do carry lots of cash after dark.

(9) Do enjoy yourself; by all means, be happy and friendly. Just be street smart and remain switched on at all times.

(10)  Don’t ignore your intuition. Trust your instincts if you feel something is not right. Remember your ‘Stranger Danger’ lessons as a kid. Move on to the next entertainment establishment if you don’t like the vibe. It’s better to be safe than sorry and besides, there are many other venues.

Bangkok Gets Knocked Off Its Pedestal

Thursday, February 27th, 2020

Bangkok has remained king, as the most visited city in the world for the past four years. But it definitely will not be this year.

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, I wonder how this will alter the city visitor rankings worldwide. Asian cities such as Bangkok, Tokyo, Seoul and certainly Beijing, will undoubtedly drop down the list.

The problem with travelling to Asia right now, apart from the fear of infection, is the chance of being forced to go into quarantine. Being left isolated from families and businesses, seems more of a concern to certain people. No doubt numerous people have postponed or cancelled their travel plans and you can’t blame them for playing it safe.

Although the actual risk of infection is relatively minimal in relation to population, the media are having a field day! Those who are sitting on the fence may just be persuaded by media reports to stay at home. It’s just another excuse for the killjoys to say, “The end is nigh!”

BANGKOK THAILAND 3 - Bangkok Gets Knocked Off Its Pedestal

Unless I am very much mistaken, the coronavirus will blow over like a passing storm and we will wonder what all the fuss was about. Do you remember the fears over SARS and bird flu?

While we should monitor this virus closely, let’s listen to the experts and not the press or politicians.  On one hand, we should not underestimate the threat of the coronavirus, but on the other hand, it’s not a pandemic yet. We are not facing a zombie apocalypse!

However, I do think that Thailand’s tourism industry, will be damaged considerably this year. This looks like an inevitable outcome. It does not help the situation when the Thai baht remains too strong.

Meanwhile, the Barmy Army keep marching into Bangkok’s naughty nightlife areas. It obviously takes more this to stop the mongers! Here is a YouTube filmed recently showing the scene on Soi Nana…

How To Play The GoGo Game

Sunday, February 23rd, 2020

Preface – Most of this following advice is for those who are not familiar with a certain gogo bar or red-light district in Bangkok or Pattaya. However, even experienced guys need reminders from time to time. The go-go bars are like any other business, the ultimate goal is to make money. The go-go dancers are not upon the stage for the goodness of their health. Bearing this in mind, if you think Thai gogo bars are mercenary, then visit the strip joints in Farangland for a reality check. I wish you happy hunting!

Know Your Game Plan — You should have a game plan before you enter any go-go bar. Remember, it’s your time and your money. You are calling the shots, so never forget that important fact. If for any reason you do not like the venue you can simply leave, as long as you have paid your bar bill. Firstly, see if the venue suits your needs before you commit yourself. The bar cannot charge you for looking! Any go-go bar is either busy or empty for a reason. Remember this before you decide to sit down. Here are my guidelines to help you create your gogo game plan…

Billboard Bangkok 16 - How To Play The GoGo Game

Do Not Burn Your Bridges — If for any reason you feel angry, it is better to walk away than cause a scene. Use the 24-hour rule; leave and assess the situation when you have cooled down. You may have had too much to drink, there may have been a misunderstanding and more importantly, you may want to return to that go-go bar. Furthermore, you certainly don’t want to start a fight, as you will be surrounded like General Custer! Believe me, just walk away, as it really is not worth the trouble. There are plenty of other gogo bars, so no reason you can’t have a good time.

Look Before You Leap — Take your time before selecting your lady of the night. A common mistake is to go for the first girl you see or the first girl who approaches you. She may well be the biggest hustler in the place! Wait until you have seen all the girls or you may regret it later. Therefore, there may well be hotter girls available, so hold your horses. Do not be rushed into a decision by a pushy mamasan or go-go dancer. In fact, it is better to cut out the middleman altogether. Why do you need somebody else to tell you what you like?  You pick the girl, not the other way around.

Spankys Bangkok 5 - How To Play The GoGo Game

Rules Of Engagement — They say all is fair in love and war. Well, this certainly applies to the business of booze and babes! Part of playing any game is knowing the rules. What are the drink and bar fine prices? If you don’t know then ask, don’t try to fly blind or you may well crash and burn. Before you start buying loads of drinks, how much does she charge? If you think a strip club is a lonely-hearts club you are in for a big shock buddy!

Show You Know — Show you know the game, show them the banknotes (literally) and show you are in control of the situation. The persona you portray is important, as Thais read body language well, so show you are assertive and confident. Any dodgy Thais intent on cheating you will most probably leave you alone and go after an easier target. Show them you know the go-go game and be prepared to stick by your guns.

Butterflies Bangkok 7 - How To Play The GoGo Game

Be The Boss — My final top tip is to be the boss. Certain bar girls are hardcore hookers, who are masters of manipulation. Did you know some top gogo dancers can earn 100,000 to 300,000 baht per month? Don’t let them gauge you for cash, they might make more money than you do. Don’t be scared to refuse them when they get too greedy. Just remember whose money it is and remain the boss. You have every right to spend your time and money how you want. After all, the customer is supposed to be king.

Epilogue — During the golden years, I ran both Hollywood Bars, Angelwitch Rock Dancers and Billboard Bar, which were among the most popular gogo bars in Thailand. Nowadays, I see so many problems with numerous gogo bars; they are inundated with issues both internal and external. Therefore, I feel my guidelines for you are more essential now than ever before. Armed with this advice, there is no reason you cannot have a great time in the gogo bars of Thailand. You just need to know how to play the gogo game.
