Thailand Turns Tourism Into Torturism

EVA AIR FLIGHT ATTENDANTS 2020
Thailand has announced its Special Tourist Visa requirements which includes extortionate mandatory quarantine accommodation prices.
Recently a friend of mine paid 80,000 baht which is £2,000 for a 14-day stay in a quarantine hotel room in Bangkok. He was forbidden to leave his room, with horrible stone-cold food left outside his door. He said, “I felt like a prisoner and could not wait for the ordeal to be over.”
Many people feel it is not only extortionate but an ordeal, due to the lengthy and draconian process. Most of us veteran expats know the Thai Junta take draconian to the extreme. You seriously need to think is this worth it?

Hello From Sunny Scarborough!

If you are not aware, I had to leave Bangkok, due to the C-19 pandemic and return to England. Just like so many people, the coronavirus outbreak has caused me to lose my business. I had no choice but to leave Thailand, after living in Bangkok for 22 years and repatriate to England.
However, I do intend to keep on blogging, but I do not think there will be regular blog posts, as before. I am currently adapting to life near the famous seaside town of Scarborough in North Yorkshire, England.
Until I get back up to speed, you may want to follow my daily posts on social media. I am active on Facebook HERE and also on Twitter HERE.

Nationwide Curfew Commences Friday
Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha has announced that a curfew would be imposed from Friday, April 3rd at 22:00 until 04:00 hours.
This is an attempt to prevent the COVID-19 virus spreading, as certain people have not obeyed instructions to stay at home.
Let us all hope this dreaded virus passes sooner than later.
Nationwide night curfew starts Friday The area near Nonthaburi market on the first night of the curfew from 11pm to 5am announced by the provincial governor on the same day. Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha has declared a state of emergency due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
It will come into effect from this Thursday. However, an official statement as to what the conditions entail has yet to be announced.
This will mean the Thai authorities will have unprecedented governmental powers. It is thought to include enforcing a curfew and putting restrictions upon domestic and international travel.
According to the Thai government, the COVID-19 in Thailand has now claimed four lives. Until recently there was only one death.
News Source – Khaosod Media
BANGKOK – Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha said an emergency decree, along with a raft of new restrictive measures, will come into effect on Thursday. Speaking in a televised address, Prayut said the enactment of the 2005 Royal Decree of Emergency Situations is necessary to stem the coronavirus epidemic, which claimed four lives in Thailand as of the latest count.

The Covid-19 outbreak in Bangkok has spiked, forcing the Thai government to seriously consider a lockdown.
Bangkok is already in shutdown mode with shopping malls, bars, nightclubs and restaurants, all closed until at least April 12th.
Recently, the Thai Army was deployed to disinfect Chinatown and Thailand was recently praised for their efforts by the World Health Organisation.
It is the consensus from ground zero that lockdown is not a matter of if but when. With the Covid-19 cases rising it is more inevitable.
NB. Covid-19 is an acronym for Corona Virus Disease 2019
BANGKOK – Emergency decree may be enacted soon to impose a lockdown of Bangkok in a bid to stem the coronavirus epidemic, government sources said Friday. The measure is being discussed just as health officials on Saturday say 89 new cases of confirmed infection were found, a sharp rise from daily tally in recent days.

As you are probably aware, almost all of the bars and nightclubs are closed in Bangkok and Pattaya. This is to prevent the Coronavirus from spreading further. It’s probably wise at this stage but nobody knows how long the bars will stay shut.
However, certain pubs (but not all), can open until midnight. Three of them are The Game Pub (Sukhumvit Soi 9), The Oasis Pub (Soi Cowboy) and The Old English Pub (Sukhumvit Soi 55).

Last night I had an excellent Cheeseburger at The Game Sports Bar & Grill which is conveniently located next to the BTS Nana Skytrain Station. This is one of the few venues still serving booze.

The Thai Prime Minister has made a flip-flop on his statement that the entertainment venues will not have to close. This is in order to prevent the COVID-19 virus from spreading further.
Just two days later he has now stated that all bars and nightclubs in Bangkok and Pattaya, will have to close from March 18th until March 31st.
Stickman recently said about the Thai government that left hand does not know what the right hand is doing and this just proves the point.

No doubt this is a devastating blow for entertainment venues in Bangkok and Pattaya. It means multitudes of employees, including the barmy army of bargirls, will most probably be laid off with unpaid leave.
One way around this is entertainment establishments that have restaurant licenses. For example, pubs with restaurant licenses can continue to do trade, which makes a mockery of the whole concept.
There are two questions that remain in my mind. Will this soon include restaurants, public transportation systems and shopping malls? Also, what about the rest of Thailand?
Breaking: We can confirm that the Provincial Government of Banglamung and Chonburi have ordered, effective tomorrow, March 18th, 2020, that all entertainment venues must close until March 31st, 2020. The Pattaya News spoke with the Banglamung Police Chief over the phone this evening and confirmed the information.

Thailand’s tourism industry is in turmoil due to the media hype over the coronavirus outbreak. The levels of panic among certain people worldwide created by the media has caused hysteria.
This is severely damaging tourism and also Thailand’s entertainment sector. No doubt a number of bars, pubs and clubs will be affected, some have already closed as a result.

Stickman’s opening article in his weekly column is a collection of opinions and on the ground reports from foreign residents in Thailand. My opinions are among them and you can read it HERE
I still stick by my guns in my previous article entitled, Thailand Gets Knocked Off Its Pedestal which you can read RIGHT HERE

Thai Airways has announced over 12 billion baht in losses in 2019 and surely it must be as bad, if not worse this year.
When this scare storm passes, I fear that the damage will be done. The unscrupulous media machine will move on to its next scaremongering campaign. Then Thailand will be left to pick up the pieces of its shattered tourism industry.

Mark my words, the media machine will have a lot to answer for regarding the COVID-19 virus scare. Let’s hope this COVID-19 virus soon passes.
However, will the public become any wiser to their devious trickery?

Back in Britain, I was a professional personal protection specialist. I have conducted seminars and presentations with the British Police Force for community safety.
Below are Ten Top Tips for general personal protection after dark. Most of these guidelines are common sense but logical thinking is often ignored when people drink alcohol…
(1) Do carry enough money for the evening or have a credit card, as a backup. There are plenty of available ATM machines so you have no excuses. Running out of cash is not only embarrassing it can land you in jail.
(2) Don’t carry valuables after dark or wear flashy jewellery. This includes your passport and extra credit cards. Just take what you will need to use that night. The less you carry the less you can lose.
(3) Do keep an eye on your bar bill. Check what is going on it and be aware of the total. You do not want to rack up a big bar bill and not be able to pay it. This is why it is a good idea to carry your credit card if you overspend.
(4) Don’t leave your friend alone if they are very drunk. You won’t forgive yourself if they get mugged or worse. Remember, there is safety in numbers, especially in a strange place.
(5) Do keep an eye on your drinks. It’s easy to slip drugs into unattended drinks. If you need to leave your drink, either finish it or order a new one when you return.
(6) Don’t walk in dark or secluded areas. Stick to well-lit public areas or get a taxi if it is late at night. Muggings do happen in Thailand.
(7) Do have plenty of small banknotes to prevent being short-changed. You can easily break a few big bills at one of the multitudes of convenience stores. Alternatively, you can get a bundle of small baht bills at a bank.
(8) Don’t carry your wallet or phone in your back pocket. Pickpockets do operate in Thailand so don’t give them the opportunity. Consider wearing a money belt if you do carry lots of cash after dark.
(9) Do enjoy yourself; by all means, be happy and friendly. Just be street smart and remain switched on at all times.
(10) Don’t ignore your intuition. Trust your instincts if you feel something is not right. Remember your ‘Stranger Danger’ lessons as a kid. Move on to the next entertainment establishment if you don’t like the vibe. It’s better to be safe than sorry and besides, there are many other venues.

Bangkok has remained king, as the most visited city in the world for the past four years. But it definitely will not be this year.
Due to the coronavirus outbreak, I wonder how this will alter the city visitor rankings worldwide. Asian cities such as Bangkok, Tokyo, Seoul and certainly Beijing, will undoubtedly drop down the list.
The problem with travelling to Asia right now, apart from the fear of infection, is the chance of being forced to go into quarantine. Being left isolated from families and businesses, seems more of a concern to certain people. No doubt numerous people have postponed or cancelled their travel plans and you can’t blame them for playing it safe.
Although the actual risk of infection is relatively minimal in relation to population, the media are having a field day! Those who are sitting on the fence may just be persuaded by media reports to stay at home. It’s just another excuse for the killjoys to say, “The end is nigh!”

Unless I am very much mistaken, the coronavirus will blow over like a passing storm and we will wonder what all the fuss was about. Do you remember the fears over SARS and bird flu?
While we should monitor this virus closely, let’s listen to the experts and not the press or politicians. On one hand, we should not underestimate the threat of the coronavirus, but on the other hand, it’s not a pandemic yet. We are not facing a zombie apocalypse!
However, I do think that Thailand’s tourism industry, will be damaged considerably this year. This looks like an inevitable outcome. It does not help the situation when the Thai baht remains too strong.
Meanwhile, the Barmy Army keep marching into Bangkok’s naughty nightlife areas. It obviously takes more this to stop the mongers! Here is a YouTube filmed recently showing the scene on Soi Nana…

Conveniently located next to the BTS Nana Skytrain Station you will find The Game Sports Bar. If you need me to be more precise, especially if you are on foot, it’s right on the corner of Sukhumvit Soi 9.
The Game Pub has stood the test of time and is a popular place for resident expats, tourists and Thais alike.
It’s a popular place to start your evening before you visit Bangkok’s trendy clubland located on Sukhumvit Soi 11. Alternatively, perhaps you prefer the naughty nightlife situated in Nana Plaza and also in Soi Cowboy. You have easy access to these although Soi Cowboy is a bit further up the road.
The Game Sports Bar has some great Super Savers and this is an ideal way to counter the strong Thai baht. Go along and take advantage of the special Meal Deal and Happy Hour.

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, many Asian tourists are currently not visiting Thailand. The drop in Asian visitors is visually very noticeable and the financial impact on the tourism industry is severe.
Last year there were over 10 million visitors from China. One estimation is that number will drop by 80% or more this year. This is already having a domino effect around the Asia region.
When I visited Pattaya in January, I was the only Westerner on the beach, amid people from various parts of Asia. Right now, there is possibly a scattering of Eastern Europeans and the rest are probably from India.

Unfortunately, the Thai baht is still too strong against foreign currencies. This alone stops numerous farangs and alike from visiting. I dare say there are a number of potential visitors sitting on the fence.
However, in saying that it is a great time to visit Thailand because flights and hotels cost less now. If you shop around on websites like Agoda you will find some great hotel deals, especially places such as Pattaya.
Another good reason to visit is the airports, hotels, beaches, tourist attractions, shopping malls, nightlife areas and public transportation, will be much less crowded. If you like space it’s an ideal time to visit Thailand.

Daves Raves – Below is a similar article by the Pattaya Mail…
Hotels are cheaper, the traffic better and maybe even the service has improved now that Pattaya’s Chinese golden goose has flown the coop. With China banning overseas tours in an effort to combat spread of the coronavirus, Pattaya has taken on the feel of low season even though the calendar says it should still be …

I just got back to Bangkok from an enjoyable two day trip to Pattaya. I thought you might appreciate a Photo Gallery to show you what it looks like these days. I think Pattaya is an acquired taste, so I will let you decide whether you want to visit or not. I make suggestions but I am certainly not pretentious enough to tell you what you like. :)
I took the bus to Pattaya from the station opposite BTS Ekamai and it only cost me 119 baht. You know what mate, the motorbike taxi ride to the bus station cost me more! If you are on a budget take the bus, otherwise barter a taxi ride for around 1,000 baht. Thailand is not expensive if you let Dave The Rave guide you!
I first visited Pattaya in May 1988 during a scorching hot season. Now, fast forward to 2020 and I still enjoy visiting Pattaya, even after all these years. Of course, a lot has to do with the fact I am a Thailand Nightlife Guru but nevertheless, I genuinely like Pattaya; albeit in small portions.
The intense furnace heat of Bangkok can and does wear you down. Believe me, I know I have lived here since 1999 and even the Thais complain about the heat. Therefore, a visit to Pattaya gets me out of the furnace of the Big Mango to enjoy a (somewhat slightly) cooler climate.
I enjoyed staying at Robin’s Nest on Soi Diana, as I always do whenever I visit Sex-On-Sea. They run a tight ship at Robin’s Nest Pub but it retains a relaxed, pleasant atmosphere. Considering Pattaya can be rather rough ‘n’ ready, they maintain high standards. Believe me, I have seen some dumps in my 30+ years here! Robin’s Nest has clean, comfortable rooms, great pub grub and live sports.
One positive thing about the beer bars and gogo bars in Pattaya is that they offer so many Happy Hours. If you are on a Booze Cruise the best gogo bar Happy Hour is 55 Baht Bottled Beers at Pandoras GoG0 Bar in Soi LK Metro. In addition, don’t miss Sapphire Super Sunday with Happy Hour prices all night at Sapphire Club in Soi 15 Walking Street. Also on Walking Street, Pin-Up Agogo offers a 90 Baht Happy Hour. These are just a few examples of the multitudes of Happy Hours in Sin City.
