Daves Raves – 12/12/2019

Thursday, December 12th, 2019

Daves Raves – Really, I should have done this a long time ago. The purpose of publishing Daves Raves every week is to prepare you for any parties, promotions, events, updates and any other relevant information. I decided upon Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, so you know the days I will post.

I considered publishing on a Friday but this is often a manic day. It’s only natural to be eager to hit the town, following the end of the working week. By the time Friday comes around, you may well have already made your plans for the weekend.

Super Saver – (TTIF) Thank Tiger It’s Friday! Stumble Inn located on Soi Nana offer Tiger Pints for just 100 baht every Friday. The offer runs from 09:00 till closing time. Believe me, by Bangkok standards this is a great drinks deal. In addition, there are two great live bands Earth Collide and Nowhere Man to rock your Friday night. Enjoy!

Date Mate – I am your mate with that important date! This week there is a Playmates Party at both Billboard GoGo Bar and Butterflies GoGo Bar. They are both located on the Top Floor of Nana Plaza, Bangkok. I write this just in case you have been hiding in a remote destination all these years!

There will be a generous offering of Free Food including Pizza, Chicken Wings and Potato Wedges. In addition, the American owners promise an impressive lineup consisting of a quantity of quality. The doors open at 20:00 and the event is this Saturday, December 14th. Make sure you go early to get a good seat close to the action. Prepare yourself for at least 250 hot babes spread across five stages.

Currently, both Billboard and Butterflies are among the most popular gogo bars in Thailand. The owners ensure the stages are packed with gogo dancers and let’s not forget those bubble bath babes!

Daves Raves — My publishing schedule is Sundays, Tuesdays & Thursdays.

Dave The Rave’s 12 Year Anniversary

Sunday, December 30th, 2018

This Thailand nightlife website was launched 12 years ago. How time flies when you are having fun!

Along with my mate Stickman’s website, Dave The Rave Bangkok is one of the oldest websites, which predominantly features Thailand nightlife.

As you probably know, most blogs fizzle out and die, especially niche blogs such as mine. However, this blog has stood the test of time.

As a coincidence, I have now lived in Bangkok for 20 years and it is the 30th anniversary of my first trip to Thailand.

I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your loyalty and support. Some of you have followed this website since 2006 when my Bangkok Blog was born. What a rollercoaster ride. Cheers!

Soi Cowboy Video

Friday, October 19th, 2018

Here is a YouTube Video to show you how the scene looks in Soi Cowboy. It is a new video filmed last month (September 2018).

Notice that there is a lot of walking, talking and looking but not a great deal of drinking and spending. This is the reality of Soi Cowboy nowadays.

The stereotypical tourists have absolutely no intention of entering any of the go-go bars in Soi Cowboy. They just want to tell people they walked through a naughty nightlife area in Bangkok. They can proclaim with great delight, “We actually saw it!”

The Little Las Vegas is more of a visual attraction to the hoards of window shopping, selfie-taking, casual strolling people. In this respect, Soi Cowboy resembles a smaller version of Walking Street in Pattaya.

The vibrant neon lights, food stalls, outside beer bars and the ‘cheerleaders’ on the street, add to the atmosphere.

Scruffy Murphy’s Pub Is Short-Listed For The Irish Pubs Global Awards

Saturday, October 6th, 2018

Recently, I visited Sukhumvit Soi 23 in downtown Bangkok. However, I was not there to visit Little Las Vegas, otherwise known as Soi Cowboy. Oh no, I was on a different mission.

There I was expecting to see a Jolly Green Giant rising amid a cluster of shops and other buildings. However, Scruffy Murphy’s is more like a giant, bright red, oblong box. I must admit that threw me off track but I did hear that Scruffy Murphy’s is distinctly Irish inside. I wandered in to experience a traditional Irish establishment, with a succinct Thai twist. However, where does that colour selection originate? It would be bizarre if it were full of Manchester United or Liverpool fans!

Now it was time to get down to the nitty gritty… This year the Irish Global Pubs Awards attracted almost 25,000 entrants. We are proud to announce that Scruffy Murphy’s Irish Pub based in Bangkok, has been short-listed in four different categories. The awards represent excellence in entertainment, sport, whiskey and management.

Scruffy Murphy’s was nominated for Best Sports Experience, Best Whiskey Experience, Best Entertainment Venue and Best Bar Person. This is for Irish Pubs Global’s Asia, Africa, Middle East and Pacific region. The winners will be announced on October 9th at the Galmont Hotel in Galway, Ireland.

Scruffy Murphy’s is the latest chapter in the history of a brand that dates back to 2001 in Phuket. I was vaguely aware of this, as I had read it somewhere in cyberspace. A local media source said that Scruffy Murphy’s has now established itself as Bangkok’s premier Irish pub. Well, they have a good point because it is Bangkok’s only contender to be nominated for these global awards.

The Best Entertainment Venue award honours pubs that provide the best entertainment experience for customers, including traditional Irish music, local talent and Irish acts. It also is the centre for events and celebrations including the Bloomsday Festival, Galway Oyster Festival, Taste of Ireland Week, and not forgetting the biggest day of them all, St Patrick’s Day.

The Best Sports Experience award recognizes pubs that highlight Irish sport at its best, with a regular schedule. This involves a range of sporting events including the Gaelic Athletic Association, hurling, rugby and football. Scruffy’s also catered last year’s Asian Gaelic Games in Bangkok.

The Best Whiskey Experience prize goes to the pub demonstrating the best Irish whiskey has to offer, with a wide range of Irish whiskey offerings, food pairings and product knowledge.

Scruffy Murphy’s features the largest selection of whiskey in Bangkok, from the popular classics Jameson and Tullamore Dew to boutique brands like Teelings, Pogues and the West Cork series. The bar also stocks many selected single-malt and small-batch distilleries from home.

Finally, the Best Bar Person award recognizes the manager or owner who best demonstrates the understanding and level of service expected of a leading bar person amongst his and her peers, showing responsibility and leadership skills while also being a reliable team player.

I was chatting with Eoin O’Ceallaigh, the general manager, who incidentally is nominated for the Best Bar Person Award. Eoin commented, “We’re very honoured to be short-listed for these awards. It wouldn’t have been possible without the great support from the Irish community here in Bangkok, plus all the hard work by our dedicated team.”

We are all waiting in anticipation and wish you all at Scruffy Murphy’s the best of luck for the awards ceremony on October 9th.

Sukhumvit Soi Nana

Here’s a selection of photos taken recently on Sukhumvit Soi Nana. It’s a vivid and lively scene, known worldwide, as one of the most popular streets in Thailand.

Sukhumvit Soi 4 is renowned for its beer bars, pubs, restaurants, hotels, convenience stores, street food stalls, local hawkers, streetwalkers, curb crawling taxis, and the mighty three storey atrium namely, Nana Entertainment Plaza.

This will give you a sneak peek behind the bamboo curtain.

Ladies Night Aussie Style

The Australian Pub Bangkok

Recently, I discovered another Ladies Night in Bangkok that’s rather different because it’s Aussie style.

Let’s face it the ole Aussie’s are different in their way of enjoying life. Throw another sheep on the barbie Sheila!

While you are sipping on your VB Beer or a Bundy Coke, the Sheila’s can enjoy Free Mai Tai Cocktails!

The Australian Pub is located on Sukhumvit Soi 11 which has emerged as a major club ‘n’ pub hub, here in the heart of The Big Mango

The inimitable Irish-American Lee Shamrock provides the live music, and I am sure Lee is happy to entertain the lovely ladies.

The Pickled Liver Birthday Bash

A Home Away From Home

One aspect of Bangkok that makes it such a fascinating city is the melting pot of nationalities you are likely to encounter here. Resident expatriates and foreign visitors originating from all corners of the globe have conspired to create this most cosmopolitan city.

Today’s Sunday Roast is about two British Boozers — one is The Pickled Liver Pub and the other is Nick Wetzel. Some people refer to Nick as ‘The Prince’ because as soon as he knocked off work he was in The Queen’s Arms!

Wherever you come from The Pickled Liver Pub will welcome you with open arms, albeit not Royal Arms. Although the Pickled Liver is a traditional British pub, the distinct international flavour resides within.

On the 10th of June 2006, The Pickled Liver Pub first opened its doors in the narrow lane, connecting to Sukhumvit Soi 11 in downtown Bangkok.

On the very first night, they showed England v Paraguay in the World Cup to a packed house on that fateful evening. It really was the first speciality football bar in Bangkok.

Nick had been thinking about opening a bar for some time, constantly frustrated by the inability to watch a football match in peace. In most bars, you have to suffer some bar girl bothering you for a lady drink.

Nick commented, “I would never consider running a pub in England because of the ridiculous health and safety regulations, and to be honest who wants to live there anyway?”

Nick went on to say, “The important thing was spending five years here before opening my own bar, doing valuable research and getting to know how Bangkok ticks.”

Before Nick took it over it was Ye Olde Bell, hidden away behind the popular Cheap Charlie’s Bar. Nick gradually built up a loyal following that is still affectionately known as The Pickled Liver Family.

Nick had five great years in Soi 11 before being forced out by an obtuse landlady, who didn’t seem to agree with people drinking or enjoying themselves. Yes, she was very strange!

Luckily, Nick found his current location after an extensive search and after three long months of frustration, they finally reopened on the 11th of September 2011

Regarding the move to Sukhumvit Soi 7/1 Nick said, “It’s hard to believe we’ve been here for 7 years, but despite the walk of shame past the naughty girly bars, plus the marauding ladyboys, we battle on.”

Former professional baseball player Brian Abrams reminded me to mention how warm and welcoming Nick’s pub has become. The Pickled Liver Pub is a cosy place, referred to by Nick, as his living room. The die-hard regulars and ‘irregulars’ feel The Pickled Liver is their ideal home away from home.

Brian is a huge supporter of The Pickled Liver, who could easily be mistaken for The Pickled Liver Pub’s Public Relations Officer. With Nick’s own brand of humour, he would say, “We even let Americans drink here.”

Recently, The Pickled Liver Pub celebrated the 7th Anniversary of relocating to Sukhumvit Soi 7/1 with a Birthday Bash. There was a lavish complimentary buffet, including a delicious Massaman Curry.

This was very appropriate, as curry is now Britain’s most popular dish. I unashamedly wolfed down a load of Massaman Curry, blended with chips and gravy!

The live entertainment was provided by Lee ‘Human Jukebox’ Shamrock. Robert Dagger was honoured with a tribute entitled ‘Moves Like Dagger’ which went down well with the crowd.

The tempo of Lee Shamrock’s one-man-band routine was great, with the ladies dancing and others singing along. Lee’s romantic love ballads wooed the ladies, especially ‘Save The Last Shag For Me.’

As you can see from the photographs, it was a great night. However, there will be plenty more to come. Nick is one of the few remaining Bangkok resident expats who has known me for 20 years. I wish Nick and The Pickled Liver Pub continued success and happiness.

Shark Bar Celebrates 16th Anniversary

Shark Bar located in Soi Cowboy is hosting a Big Birthday Bash tonight.

In order to celebrate this milestone, they are offering Free Food and Lucky Draws, plus an abundance of hot dolly birds.

What I like about Shark Bar is the touch of style, with the go-go dancers elegantly dressed to be undressed.

Shark Go-Go Bar is particularly popular with Asian customers, as well as Westerners. Shark retains its popularity even after all these years. Just like a classic wine is has matured well with age.

By any standards celebrating 16 years in the Bangkok go-go bar business is a remarkable achievement. Congratulations to Frankie and his team.

Come on down tonight you party animals!

Top Score On The Top Floor

Without a doubt, one of Thailand’s most popular go-go bars is located on the top floor in Nana Entertainment Plaza.

The go-go bar I am referring to is the Billboard Bar, which is renowned for having among the hottest go-go dancers in all of Thailand.

Stumble Inn’s Sixth Anniversary Party

Situated near the entrance to Nana Plaza is the popular British-Thai Sports Bar. Frequented by resident expats and tourists alike, it remains popular.

Named with distinct irony ‘Stumble Inn’ hosted its Sixth Anniversary Party last Friday night. It was time to celebrate six successful years in the Bangkok bar business.

The Thai manageress Patty was celebrating her birthday, so it was double trouble and bound to get a bit wild. Yep, it was my kind of party!

Once again, it was time to get the staff dolled up with war paint and into their glad rags. The cooks are armed and ready to serve up big batches of pub grub. Now we are all ready to party like rock stars!

Talented acoustic musicians Earth Collide kicked off the live entertainment with rapturous renditions of timeless classics. Earth belted out the punk rock classic ‘Teenage Kicks’ released in 1978 by The Undertones. Fair to say, as a former punk rocker in my teens, I was in my element.

We are a colourful collection of characters – Gav the Gaffer, Dave the Rave, Geordie John and Stickboy. In retrospect, compared to us the rest of the folks looked quite normal.

Gav the Gaffer was wearing a ruby red long-sleeved shirt. I didn’t know if he was going to pull a bunch of rabbits out of a top hat or do a disco dance routine. All envy aside, our Gav looked the biz.

The second live music artists were the classic rock band The Nowhere Man. Inspired by The Beatles, these guys can rock your world. Lead guitarist Paulie was giving it some hammer. At one point, I expected to see smoke billowing from his electric guitar.

Whatever people say about The Nowhere Man Band, these lads play and sing their hearts out. Let’s face it most people can’t even sing rock songs, let alone sing in a foreign language. For a local pub band, The Nowhere Man rank high in my opinion. Yes, they are LOUD but we are not in a library!

Even the free buffet was rather extraordinary. There was a culinary clash, as Traditional Thai Food sat aside Prawn Crackers, British Bangers, Chips, Potato Wedges, Brown Gravy and Crispy Fried Chicken Wings.

The bosses at Stumble Inn generously offered Tiger Pints at just 100 baht all night long. Also, there was a special discount of twenty percent for Bangkok Funcard Members

To throw a proper party you have to offer something to your customers. It’s a great chance to thank them by offering free food, drinks deals, lucky draws, random giveaways and/or special entertainment. The guys at Stumble Inn know how to throw a party and unlike some bars, they obviously value their customers.

As a reminder, you will be pleased to know that Tiger Pints are only 100 baht every Friday at the Stumble Inn. In addition, during all LIVE English Premier League games, Tiger and Chang Pints are only 100 baht. These are great drinks deals for lovers of the amber nectar!

Join me next week for another Dave Rave Sunday Roast. Cheers!

Late Night Happy Hours

Monday, August 20th, 2018

Scruffy Murphy’s Irish Pub

Good evening! Have I found a cracker for you?! I came across a pub promotion that is rather different. So often we see ‘Happy Hour’ but the times are way too early for most guys, who are heading out for a night on the town.

Anywhere from 17:00 to 21:00 is early evening for most drinkers and therefore, the vast majority of party people have not even stepped foot outside their door.

The smart guys at Scruffy Murphy’s have introduced a Late Night Happy Hour. This will lure the guys to stay longer before they hit the go-go bars in Soi Cowboy. Take note that it runs from Sundays through to Thursdays.

Scruffy Murphy’s is located opposite Soi Cowboy down on Sukhumvit Soi 23

The Hostess With The Mostest

Dave Rave Cave

Welcome to the wacky world of Dave The Rave Bangkok. I have decided that from now on I will be blogging regularly, but this time I mean it for real, as you will see. Join me at the Dave Rave Cave for your daily dose of Dave’s Dolls and more!

Tune in every Sunday at around 6:00 PM (Thai Time) for my new weekly edition of Dave Rave Sunday Roast and also, visit midweek every Wednesday for Thailight Zone. These new additions will mix in with my daily blog posts. It’s good to be back!

Charming Cheerleaders

Last Friday night, I went for a sojourn in Nana Plaza, as you do. While I was checking out the top floor I spotted a pair of gorgeous dolly birds. These lovely ladies happened to be ‘cheerleaders’ working their spot outside Butterflies Go-Go Bar.

I watched intriguingly, as they enticed guys through the curtains, with a fine example of their womanly wiles. Suddenly #801 went striding into Butterflies with an arm placed strategically around a Japanese man’s waste.  Now that’s how you do it girls! My lord, these girls are a breath of fresh air!

It Starts At The Door

Some people may not be aware that I was a Bangkok go-go bar manager for the best part of 20 years. Even now I am out of go-go bar management, I hate to see nobody working the doors at the bars. It’s without a doubt one of my pet peeves, as I just see money going straight down the drain.

As the adage goes, ‘You never get a second chance to make a first impression.’ Therefore, the first thing people see and experience is the entrance. The sheer volume of bodies I watch strolling past empty doorways is staggering. The answer is simply that they are unsure what lies behind those curtains.

If you watch Spanky’s Bar on the Middle Floor in Nana Plaza, they really work at getting a constant flow of customers into their bar. I cannot understand why other go-go bars don’t do the same. It’s completely bewildering to me.

More than ever before, the go-go bar business is very much a numbers game. Those days of the one guy who spends the equivalent of the total bar takings for the evening are as rare as rocking horse poop! More and more, we are witnessing the ‘one-stop hop.’ Whereby, they order a drink, neck it and depart swiftly, as though they will miss their flight or something.

Therefore, it’s more important than ever to adopt the philosophy that every single potential customer could make a difference to the cash register. If more go-go bars adopted the philosophy of having lovely, lively cheerleaders on the door, they will inevitably be more successful.

Let The Tigers Roar!

The much anticipated weekend is here and that means Tiger Pints are available for 100 baht at Stumble Inn Bar.

This super saver runs all day and all night, so get in there and take full advantage!

Stumble Inn Bar is situated near Nana Plaza on Sukhumvit Soi 4

Daily Chang Beer Promotion

Thursday, August 16th, 2018

I remember a while ago taking some photos of a lovely lass who was promoting Chang Beer at a party in The Game. I am familiar with The Game Sports Bar and I like to pop in from time to time.

Well, I am pleased to announce that the 2-4-1 Chang Beer Promo is still going. I know the Thai baht remains strong against a number of foreign currencies, but this drinks deal will help to take the sting away.

Believe me, I was happy to be hovering around Miss Chang, who has a smile that could melt the heart of the devil himself. What a cracker!

To prolong things I ordered some Chang Beer from her, as I thought it would be rude to refuse. I didn’t down too many, as I did not want a Changover!

This is another added bonus about Thailand because many of the beer promo girls are absolutely gorgeous. These aspects of Thailand are overlooked by some people who take things for granted. You not only get a free Chang Beer when you order two bottles, you also get served by Sexy Suzie. Hey guys, life could be much worse!

The Game Sports Bar is located on the corner of Sukhumvit Soi 9

FIFA World Cup Fever!

Thursday, June 28th, 2018

As football fever hits Thailand, the FIFA World Cup 2018 is really starting to get exciting. With Germany shockingly sent home very early by South Korea yesterday, it’s certainly full of surprises this year.

Whatever football team you support, the games are being shown live in many bars right across Thailand. What is equally surprising is that England (along with a few other teams) is looking quite good so far.

Here in Bangkok, the popular British Sports Bar Stumble Inn (located on Soi Nana), are making a special effort for footy fans. Tiger and Chang Pints will cost you just 100฿ during all live World Cup matches. Cheer With A Beer!

In addition, you can join my friends at The Game Sports Bar located on Sukhumvit Soi 9 for Drink Deals during all live World Cup games.
