Bangkok Bars Rollercoaster Ride

Friday, February 20th, 2009

nana plaza bangkok1 300x183 - Bangkok Bars Rollercoaster RideApproaching the end of February and the Bangkok bars rollercoaster ride is starting to get very scary. Overall, Bar trade right across this vast, sprawling metropolis is affected right now. Only the minority of exceptional bars continue to do a roaring trade.  The Thais pray with more intensity and Buddhist offerings are increasing. In some go-go bars in Nana Plaza Thai bar girls sit patiently, but few farangs walk through the door. The neon jungle environment has become, as Charles Darwin said, “Survival of the fittest.”

Comparing the Bangkok bar trade with a rollercoaster ride, the steep drop makes the head spin, as you cling on for your life. Foreign currencies are not at all favourable against an unbelievably strong Thai baht. The global economic crisis takes its toll and even multimillion dollar companies are falling into a deep, dark abyss. It was predicted to be a very tough financial year and so far, the economic experts are being proved right. Let’s hope it is part of a cycle and the global economy will eventually recover.

To end on a much more positive note, this leaves the beer bars and go-go bars less crowded with guys and therefore, more available Thai girls for you. Happy babe hunting!

ENGLISH BREAKFAST AT SOI 8 PUB IN BANGKOK

bangkok nightlife january 10 2009 017 - A Visit To Soi 8 Pub In Bangkok

THE BIG BREAKFAST IN SOI 8 PUB BANGKOK

This week I decided to go to Soi 8 Pub. I had not been there in several weeks, so I was overdue for a visit. After having a chat with the owner Dave, I decided to study the menu. I suffered a bit of an ‘analysis paralysis’ because there is so much of a selection. I settled for the English breakfast. WOW! It was a very large plate of food and all for just 185 baht. Some places in Bangkok charge 200-300 baht. Plus you have to pay for VAT and service charge on top.

Briefly observe Dave The Rave’s expanding waistline and you will see that I have had a lot of ‘pub grub’ in my day. Therefore, I feel I have experience in this area…

The old spit ‘n’ sawdust British pubs would sometimes throw in a breakfast for ‘Billy Bunters’ (punters), who stayed overnight at that particular tavern, or inn. By using the English colloquilism ‘throw in’ it became a literal translation. The buxom barmaid would sling your plate of incinerated fatty food right at you. Nowadays modern pubs are a lot more sophisticated and thank goodness they are!

I have to admit that I am an ardent fan of Soi 8 Pub in Bangkok. Located close to the entrance to Sukhumvit Soi 8, it is conveniently located for respectable folks, as well as piss artists alike! Recently, Soi 8 Pub has expanded the seating area to the left as you walk in the door. While some bar owners in Bangkok are cutting back, Kiwi Dave is expanding his horizons. On Christmas Day, Soi 8 Pub remained full all day. How many bars and restaurants can you say that about?

The service girls wear a smart uniform and they are always friendly and helpful. All in all, it was a terrific tasting, authentic English breakfast. This is a BIG breakfast, so make sure that you are famished. The service was as efficient as ever. I can confidently say that the ‘pub grub’ here is excellent value for money. Soi 8 Pub gets two thumbs up from Dave The Rave… Don’t be shy give it a try!

HOW LOW CAN IT GO!

Many a bar boss in Thailand is singing the low season blues this June.  Similar to a scary rollercoaster ride, bar trade suddenly took a steep drop.  There are several factors contributing to this quiet period.  In fact, some people are labelling it, “The lowest of low seasons.”  Firstly, many people outside of the bar business in Thailand, are unaware that June ranks as one the worst months of the whole year.  As per usual, the low season arrives promptly every year.  It’s not called “low season” for nothing folks!  Secondly, we have had some very heavy rain.  In Bangkok on Monday and Tuesday, the rain came hammering down for several hours.  It’s a fact that some bargirls are not easy to motivate at the best of times.  Give them an excuse like heavy rain, and they won’t bother to leave their apartments.  However, this time around it was a valid excuse, because the rain was so heavy.  The sky wept intensely and those residing in remote areas were literally left stranded.  The timing of the rain was not at all favourable.  Well blow me!  Just as I’m writing this, silvery bullets hammer onto the ground.  Bangkok suffers torrential rainfall for a second consecutive day.  A loud clap of thunder from an angry sky makes my dog jump.  Parts of Bangkok are now flooded by several inches… (more…)

Thailand Night Fever

Angelwitch Showgirls Nana Plaza Loy Kratong Bangkok 2007 - Thailand Night FeverWelcome to the Thai New Year 2551 and let’s all hope it is a good year for Thailand.  Another Songkran has come and gone for most of us, but don’t forget that Pattaya will continue the water warfare until this weekend.  I have to say that I thought the Songkran Festival was a bit quiet overall this year.  If you question what I mean by that, then just ask a bar owner.  The go-go bars in Bangkok had fewer go-go dancers, due to many bar girls deciding to go home this Songkran.  Some go-go bars cut their girls as much as 2,000 Baht per day.  This is a very severe cut for not working during Songkran.  However, this can be counterproductive to the bar, because some bar girls will stop  work for the rest of April.  If a bargirl is cut 6,000 Baht that is over 50% of a go-go dancers salary.  Of course, many Thais are on much lower salaries than go-go dancers are.  Most service girls don’t earn 6,000 Baht.  Therefore, a bargirl might well think; why should I work for nothing?  I would hazard a guess that in most go-go bars in Bangkok, the takings were down on last year.  Also, I couldn’t help but notice that fewer bargirls got into the spirit of things. SMOKING BAN IN A STATE OF CONFUSION

SOI COWBOY BANGKOK THAILAND 05 - Thailand Night FeverWith some bars allowing smoking and other bars not, it does make the smoking ban look like a farce.  There are establishments where the so-called smoking ban has not been enforced whatsoever.  Once again, go-go bars are at the centre of the controversy.  In the Lumpini area (lower Sukhumvit Road), the Hotels and restaurants have been told they must enforce the smoking ban, but some bars in Nana Plaza are currently exempt.  In stark contrast, further along Sukhumvit Road, the bars in Soi Cowboy have been told to comply to the new law.  Down in Pattaya, a number of the go-go bar owners are allowing smoking, but they have been told to be discrete.  Word from Thai sources is that the smoking ban will be enforced eventually, but currently there is a grace period.  Understand that if you can!  Thailand’s Ministry Of Health (rather than the police) will apparently be checking to see who is complying to the smoking ban.  After May 31st, 2008 all hotels and public establishments must comply to the smoking ban, or face a 20,000 Baht fine.  So far, it looks like the ban has gone up in a cloud of smoke.  Meanwhile folks, it’s just another moment in the Land Of Make-Believe.
