Thai Police Crackdown In Pattaya

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

A variety of stealth sleuth operations has discovered shocking evidence that there is sex-on-sale in the tourist resort of Pattaya.  Several police divisions have revealed that a very serious crackdown will begin next month to catch foreign business people who are financial backers of gay bars, beer bars and  go-go bars, where there is sex-on-sale in Pattaya.

Police investigations will determine who pays the bills and gets the profits. If the person is a foreigner, then their visa will be revoked and they will be expelled from Thailand. If it is a Thai, they will be arrested if sex is for sale. There is supposedly much concern about organized crime in the nightlife venues, said one official.

One Police Chief commented, ‘Where did the money come from?  Who is behind it?  Where does the money go?’

‘I advise anyone who has invested in a bar that might be suspected of illegal acts to clear up the problem and make sure they are not associated with any business that is engaged in illegal activities. The Thai police are taking this very seriously. Sure, in the past we have heard rumours of crackdowns, but I don’t think we have ever seen a crackdown like the one that is about to happen,’ said Drew Noyes, Managing Director of the Pattaya Times.

DAVES RAVES – You may have noticed that the Pattaya Times has covered this story, whereas the BIG media channels and newspapers have not covered the story at all.  It will be interesting to see what happens in Pattaya next month.

GO-GO BAR CLOSURE CONFUSION

If you are just joining us, Thailand has recently completed a Royal cremation ceremony. This news was covered in last week’s Thailand Night Fever.

The initial announcement regarding the 3-day closure of entertainment venues last weekend caused confusion. In Pattaya, a last minute decision stated that go-go bars and other entertainment establishments only had to close on the Saturday. A Pattaya bar owner told me that some go-go bars were open on Friday and Sunday, but others were not. It must have been a last minute scramble to round up enough bar girls for last Friday night. Fortunately, the beer bars and go-go bars in Pattaya were given a reprieve. This was not the case in Bangkok. Most of the beer bars, go-go bars and other entertainment venues in Bangkok, were closed last Friday and Saturday. But, we expected that to be the case. (more…)

LOY KRATHONG — FLOAT YOUR BOAT

Any visitor to Thailand will soon realise how beautiful many Thai women are. But, they are even more beautiful on November 12th. Today is Loy Krathong, known in English as the “festival of lights.” This traditional Thai festival celebrates the end of the monsoon season. Loy Krathong is celebrated annually to honour the “water spirits” and therefore, to show appreciation to Mae Khong Kha, the “Goddess Of Water.”  In order to demonstrate proper respect, one should dress to impress for the occasion.  Thai women wear decorative silk dresses and many style their hair beautifully with orchids.  It is one of Thailand’s most beautiful and romantic celebrations.  The romantic part is when lovers accompany each other in order to float their boat.  During a brief prayer the Thai women will say, “Kor Kamar Mae Khong Kha.”  This is to honour the Goddess Of Water, and to ask forgiveness for any wrongdoing to the water spirits. I find it fascinating, when we delve into the traditions behind these Thai festivals. (more…)

HOW LOW CAN IT GO!

Many a bar boss in Thailand is singing the low season blues this June.  Similar to a scary rollercoaster ride, bar trade suddenly took a steep drop.  There are several factors contributing to this quiet period.  In fact, some people are labelling it, “The lowest of low seasons.”  Firstly, many people outside of the bar business in Thailand, are unaware that June ranks as one the worst months of the whole year.  As per usual, the low season arrives promptly every year.  It’s not called “low season” for nothing folks!  Secondly, we have had some very heavy rain.  In Bangkok on Monday and Tuesday, the rain came hammering down for several hours.  It’s a fact that some bargirls are not easy to motivate at the best of times.  Give them an excuse like heavy rain, and they won’t bother to leave their apartments.  However, this time around it was a valid excuse, because the rain was so heavy.  The sky wept intensely and those residing in remote areas were literally left stranded.  The timing of the rain was not at all favourable.  Well blow me!  Just as I’m writing this, silvery bullets hammer onto the ground.  Bangkok suffers torrential rainfall for a second consecutive day.  A loud clap of thunder from an angry sky makes my dog jump.  Parts of Bangkok are now flooded by several inches… (more…)

Sunrise Tacos Bangkok Thailand 004 - Daves Raves - Buddhist HolidayHello Guys, I have been thinking about you recently.  Hey, now don’t get worried, because I’m not getting gay here!  I appreciate the large audience that this website has created over the past 18 months.  Therefore, I want to keep you updated more regularly.  Recently, I have been wondering about how I could update the website more often.  You may have noticed that I have created several new pages.  At first, I was so proud to see those new sections up online for the entire world to see.  I thought, “Great stuff!”  Then I thought about the time and effort involved to update them all.  Oops!  I hadn’t taken that into consideration.  For example, if you look at the alphabetical listings, you will see that some are more updated than others are.  Please excuse me for that, but there are only so many hours in a day!  The good thing is that I can keep posting updates and those A-Z listings will eventually fill up with information.  It just takes time that’s all.  Last month this website received the most hits in over a year.  Thanks for all your support; this is what makes it all worthwhile.  Cheers!

BUDDHIST HOLIDAY — MONDAY, MAY 19th

Buddhist Temples Bangkok Thailand 001 - Daves Raves - Buddhist HolidayYou need to be aware that this Monday, May 19th is a Buddhist Holiday.  Wan Visakha Bucha is one of the most important Buddha Days on the Thai calendar.  From the information I have gathered, you will probably find that most nightlife areas across Thailand are likely to be closed on May 19th out of respect.  But, if you ask around you might get lucky.  Remember that restaurants and some pubs will still be open.  In conclusion, remember that the vast majority of go-go bars, beer bars and nightclubs will be closed.  If anything chances closer to May 19th I will post another update.

STEPHEN HENDRY ROADSHOW

Stephen Hendry 001 - Daves Raves - Buddhist HolidayFrom this Monday, May 19th until May 23rd seven-time World Snooker Champion Stephen Hendry will arrive as a guest of John Smith’s Bitter and Strongbow Draught Cider.  Stephen who comes from Edinburgh in Scotland likes Thailand and he has accumulated many Thai fans.  At one time, Stephen Hendry was top of the world rankings for a record eight consecutive years.  Stephen was also the youngest ever World Snooker Champion at the age of 21.  Stephen will be making a series of one-hour appearances at pubs in Bangkok, Pattaya and Koh Samui.  Stephen will make himself available for a questions and answers session, as well as some exhibition frames.  John Smith’s Extra Smooth Bitter and Strongbow Cider will be available for a special discount price at each venue.

THE SMOKING BAN DEBATE CONTINUES

After Dark Asia Volume 5 Thailand - Thailand Night FeverI have to say that I am a bit surprised at how much of a debate the smoking ban has become.  This seems to be a very important issue to some Westerners, while other people feel there are bigger problems to deal with.  Down in Soi Cowboy, the smoking ban has been enforced in every bar.  Smokers can be seen having a cigarette outside the bars in Soi Cowboy.  Some smokers are openly displaying their disdain for the new law.  Meanwhile, non-smokers are arguing that it is high time that smoking is banned in all bars right across Thailand.  Non-smokers are clearly saying butt out!  On the other hand, there are smokers who feel hard done by after all these years.

In Nana Plaza, the authorities have not enforced the smoking ban.  Non-smokers should be aware of this fact.  However, in Angelwitch Go-Go Bar they have banned the Thai staff from smoking inside the bar.  This is something of a compromise to the situation.  Customers are allowed to smoke in all of the four Rainbow Bars.  Therefore, rival go-go bars do not want to lose customers to them.  The smoking ban has to be a rule for all if it is going to work.
