Police Charge Singer For Santika Fire

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

After completing their investigation this week, Thai Police charged the lead singer of Santika’s rock band with negligence resulting in other people’s deaths. The lead singer is from the rock band ‘Burn’ who were Santika Nightclub’s resident musicians.  The fire at Santika Nightclub in the Thonglor District of Bangkok killed 65 people and injured over 200 others. Tragically, the majority of the victims who perished in the inferno were young Thai women. Some members of the Thai emergency services said it was the worst tragedy they have ever had to face.

Bangkok Club Santika ‘Death Trap’

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Thai Police and Building Safety Inspectors have declared Santika Nightclub a ‘death trap’ following the tragedy on New Year’s Day. This comes as no surprise to many people, who know that fire safety and building regulations are rarely enforced in nightclubs in South East Asia. A fire broke out during New Year’s celebrations – flames and smoke rapidly enfulfed the building. Tragically, the fire killed 64 people and injured over 200 others.

Santika Nightclub had no heat or smoke detection systems, no fire alarm, no emergency light system, no fire exit signs, no automatic fire extinguishing system and an inadequate amount of hand-held fire extinguishers. Furthermore, Building Safety Inspectors stated that there was no evidence of any fire or building safety regulations. Similar to so many nightclubs in Thailand, it was a disaster waiting to happen. The Thai government have stated that they will be investigating fire and building safety regulations throughout Thailand. Thai Police said that those responsible for causing the fire will be brought to justice. The Thai Police investigation continues.

Thai officials have held a merit-making ceremony for the ‘spirits’ of those killed in the fire. There were 500 Thai officials in attendance, plus relatives of those killed and survivors of the inferno. Meanwhile, hundreds of Thai teenagers have camped outside Santika Club at night. Rather than praying, they were looking for ghosts.

(Many Thai people believe that ‘pee lok’ or ghosts do exist)

Bangkok Blaze Brit Saved By An Angel

bangkok club inferno1 - Bangkok Blaze Brit Saved By An Angel

New Year’s celebrations turned deadly in Bangkok’s Thonglor district, when a horrific fire killed over 60 nightclub revellers. Although some foreigners died in the blaze, the majority of the corpses were thought to be Thai women. Over 200 other Thais and foreigners were injured in the ‘Thai-ring Inferno.’ A ring of fire suddenly engulfed Santika nightclub in Ekamai, Bangkok. Many people were unaware of the fire until it was too late. British survivor Alex Wargacki, 29, tells how he was saved from death by the ‘hand of an angel’ after collapsing and falling unconscious…

“I woke up and heard this voice saying, ‘Come on this way’,” he recalled. “Then I felt myself being dragged towards an exit. A crowd of people parted in front of me and then I was out in the open air. Had it not been for this voice with the hand of an angel, I would not be alive today.”

It is truly horrific to think that this happened during New Year’s celebrations. The special party was named ‘Goodbye Santika.’ The house band are called ‘BURN’ and there were crosses and coffins on the walls. This was a popular venue with Hi-So Thais and foreigners alike. Forensic specialists from the Thai Police are currently investigating the cause of the fire.

SOI COWBOY BANGKOK THAILAND 02 - Thailand Nightlife Newsflash

An electrical fire broke out in Raw Hide Go-Go Bar in Soi Cowboy late last night. Fire spread quickly as Raw Hide was engulfed with flames and thick black smoke. Thai emergency services had the blaze under control in 15 minutes. Fortunately, nobody was injured. At this stage it is difficult to tell exactly how much damage has been done. This comes at a time when Raw Hide Go-Go Bar was starting to do well.

Thai Police are invetigating the fire, which killed 65 people at Santika Club in Ekamai, Bangkok. The horrific inferno happened just after midnight, while a crowd of 1,000 people celebrated the New Year countdown. This is a terrible tragedy. Our condolences go out to the families of the victims.

(Please note that I did not post on New Year’s Day out of respect for the victims of the Santika Club fire. RIP)

To end on a brighter note, Bangkok’s bars, go-go bars and nightclubs will be serving alcohol as normal. Police papers were not issued (as previously thought), so it is business as usual tonight and on January 3rd and 4th. There might be one night next week, when a ‘NO ALCOHOL’ dry day is declared, due to the election of the new Bangkok Governor. As always, I will keep you posted.

Welcome To Thailander Webzine!

Bangkok Thailand 001 - Thailander Webzine - Volume 1Who is a Thailander?  A Thailander is very simply any person who likes Thailand.  I coined the expression in order that we can feel we are all part of a very special group of people.  And, we are special people!  Don’t worry, because if you like Thailand you are automatically a Thailander.  This newly launched “Thailander Webzine” will be posted in addition to my Wednesday weekly editions of Thailand Night Fever

(The photo of Wat Arun was taken by Annie).

Welcome fellow Thailander!

How Big Is Thailand?

Thailand has a land area of 513,115 square kilometres.  Thailand is approximately the same size as France, but it’s a lot more fun!

Mexican Fiesta At Sunrise Tacos

Sunrise Tacos Bangkok Thailand 010 - Thailander Webzine - Volume 1Cinco De Mayo, or the Fifth Of May, is a day that is celebrated all over the world.  In Mexico, or wherever the culture of Mexico is celebrated, families, friends and neighbours gather to have a fiesta in honour of the event.  This festival observes the 1862 victory of 4,000 ill-equipped Mexicans over 8,000 well-equipped French invaders!  The battle known as the battle of Puebla took place on (you guessed it) May 5th.  Today, all is forgiven, with fiestas planned in Mexico and in many communities around the world. Gringos who have little idea why they are coming to a Cinco De Mayo celebration are happy to celebrate the day and join in the fun and parties on May 5th.

Cinco De Mayo is this Monday and Sunrise Tacos is ready to give their guests a fiesta of their own!  Festivities will include a giant frozen margarita with flavours of Lime, Mango and Fresh Strawberry.  You also will get to keep the giant souvenir glass!  This Margarita by-the-yard (800 ml or 27 ounce) glass comes with three shots of tequila and one shot of triple sec, along with the freshly squeezed juice for only 199 Baht + Vat. (50% off the price at Sukhumvit Soi 12).  This offer is valid on Monday, May 5th at the Sukhumvit Soi 12 and Siam Paragon branches.  Cheers!

To celebrate this fun holiday and all the tasty meals that go with it, for every 500 Baht your party spends on food at Sunrise Tacos that day, you will get one FREE “I Love Tacos” or “I  Love Burritos” shirt (valued at 250 Baht). This offer is valid for the Emporium, Siam Paragon and Sukhumvit Soi 12 locations, and is valid on Monday when you call for delivery at 02-229-4851 or order online at –

You will be pleased to know that the restaurant, delivery service and takeaway service is 24 hours a day.

Mexican food is a huge part of celebrating Cinco De Mayo, so be sure to celebrate it at Sunrise Tacos, for one of the biggest fiestas of the year.

Pattaya Bars Are Closed Tomorrow

tiger beer - Thailander Webzine - Volume 1Sorry to have to tell you this news, but the bars in Pattaya are CLOSED tomorrow.  Unfortunately, Saturday, May 3rd coincides with the local elections in Pattaya.  I want you guys to be aware of this, so that you can plan accordingly.  Also, you need to know that this only affects the Pattaya nightspots.  The rest of Thailand’s nightspots remain unaffected on May 3rd.

The decision to close the bars in Thailand, because of the local elections is a strange one to say the very least.  However, fighting it is futile and furthermore, trying to understand it is impossible!  We can’t do anything about it, so we might as well learn to live with it.

Late Closing Hours Reinstated In Pattaya

The good news for Pattaya is that the authorities have reinstated the late closing hours.  Once again, the Pattaya go-go bars can stay open until at least 3:00am and some of the discos and clubs are open until cockcrow.

The situation in Bangkok is also changing.  A nightclub owner told me that his club can now stay open until 2:00am.  They were being closed at midnight.  I dare say that nightclubs across Thailand have lost a lot of money.

HOORAY!  Bangkok nightspots including Nana Plaza can now stay open until at least 2:00am.  About time too!

Dave The Rave’s Birthday Bash

Buddhist Flower Garlands Bangkok Thailand 01 - Thailander Webzine - Volume 1I have to say that my birthday bash on Wednesday, April 30th was very enjoyable this year.  I was given a lovely birthday cake from Angelwitch Go-Go Bar (coffee flavour), plus a bottle of JW Black Label, a bottle of tequila, plus a special present from Matt and Pim, the co-owners of Angelwitch.  My friends surprised me with presents, which included a super Manchester United T-shirt from Leigh.  I was also given a special bottle of Crown Royal whisky from Mr Ed my webmaster.  There were lots of drinks and not forgetting plenty of hugs and kisses from the girls in Angelwitch.  Considering it is low season, I was very grateful that so many guys made a special visit to Angelwitch for my birthday. In addition, my phone was full of SMS messages and I have a backlog of emails to work through.  I was touched by your kindness.  This was one of the best birthdays I have ever had.  I wish to thank you all for making my 45th birthday so special.  Cheers!

Thailand Night Fever

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Eve X Zone Pattaya Thailand - Thailand Night FeverThis news might come as something of a surprise to you, but the owners of Nana Plaza have been digging into their pockets.  According to the Nana Plaza management (Nana Castle), the escalator next to Lucky Luke’s Bar inside Nana Plaza should be operational in about one week.  The new escalator is now operational.  Apparently, the job was finished before expected – that is a shock by Thai building standards!  It has not been repaired, but instead it has been replaced by a brand new escalator.  For those of you who are not keen on using lifts, or stairs, the new escalator will be an excellent alternative.  By installing the new escalator, I think it will please everybody, but especially the disabled.  Fellow internet columnist Baron Bonk should be thrilled with the new escalator.  We can now send dear ole Baron Bonk up to greater heights!  Combined with a clear pathway at the entrance to Nana Plaza, it will be much easier to enter and exit, plus go up to the middle level.

Recently I have spoken to Khun Num who runs Rainbow 1 and Rainbow 3, about the old Farang Connection.  (If you cannot quite remember, Farang Connection was located next door to Rainbow 3 on the middle level in Nana Plaza).  If you did not know, Khun Num has taken over the lease and is currently building a Thai restaurant there.  The building work is progressing steadily as we speak.  The new owner has hinted that he thinks he will just sell Thai food.  I am sure that it is not easy, or cheap to hire a chef who can cook both Eastern and Western cuisine to international standards.  More interestingly, with some of the hot babes that will be dining here, it definitely will not be your average Thai noodle shop! (more…)
