Robin Hood Pattaya Anniversary Party

Monday, January 27th, 2020

Monday, January 27th 2020

The popular Robin Hood Tavern is celebrating its 3rd anniversary. The party kicks off tonight from 6:30 pm, until some ungodly hour.

Despite being only three years old, believe me, it is no toddler! Robin Hood has made an impact and is a great addition to Pattaya’s pub scene.

For those who are unaware Robin Hood Tavern is located in The Avenue Mall on Second Road in Pattaya City.

The generous guys at Robin Hood are offering a Free Barbecue for paying customers. I know for a fact, the pub grub is great bang-for-baht and the management run a tight tavern.

DJ Rich Mander will be spinning the tunes and comedian Jimmy Bright will be spinning the one-liners!

Former World Boxing Champion Ricky Hatton will, be attending with friends.

Soi LK Metro Pattaya City

PATTAYA CITY 1 - Soi LK Metro Pattaya City

Pattaya City Thailand Asia

Once upon a time, Pattaya was but a small, tranquil fishing village similar to Rayong. Now fast forward to 2020 and Pattaya has grown into a city-on-sea. Renowned for its notorious naughty nightlife, Pleasure Playground is visited by tourists from all corners of the globe.

Why anybody would want to bring their family here is mystifying to me but surprisingly foreigners do bring their kids. Whilst Britain’s Blackpool offers bright lights and bingo, Pattaya is more about neon jungles and agogo!

My pseudonym for Pattaya is sex-on-sea and despite claims to the contrary, I cannot see that changing anytime in the near future. Perhaps these families think Pattaya is an Oriental Disneyland, but the big difference is the rides in this pleasure playground are for adults!

Today I want to bring to your attention, the smallish ‘L’ shaped street called LK Metro. This little diamond in the rough has become increasingly popular, especially among Western tourists and resident sexpats farangs.

The map below ⇓ shows how LK Metro has expanded into a little lovers lane comprising of beer bars and girly bars. And, before you ask me, YES! I often visit LK Metro because I’m the Go-Go Guru 🙂

Monsoon Season Hits Asia

Soi Nana Bangkok 1 1 - Monsoon Mayhem!

The monsoon season is underway in Asia and it is wise to watch the weather reports. Tropical storms can and do happen quickly, with Thailand being no exception.

The rain arrives suddenly and it is incredible how quickly the flood water can rise. Even in this modern city flooding remains a problem that we all have to learn to live with. The monsoon season is the only time of year I do not like in Thailand.

During the worst floods from September through to November, you sometimes see people wading waist-deep in dirty flood water. For those that are very unlucky, they might encounter a water snake. Yikes!

Bangkok Floods - Monsoon Mayhem!

Down in Pattaya, the flooding holds up the traffic and you are ages trying to escape. Sometimes, just getting out of Pattaya can take as long as the journey to Bangkok. you really need to time your car journeys well during the rainy season in Pattaya.

Better drainage and infrastructure was talked about for Pattaya, but alas nothing beneficial ever happened. Surely, a team of top engineers could come up with a solution. Perhaps, they just want people to suffer.

Thailand jumped into the millennium like a giant tiger, with huge numbers of visitors and a booming economy. But, it is an idiosyncratic trait that in some ways Thailand is stuck in ancient times.

tuktuk bangkok thailand - Monsoon Mayhem!

So far the rain in Bangkok is sporadic. We have had a few heavy showers, the odd dry day, then followed an almighty downpour. Some areas of Thailand such as Pattaya and Chiang Mai were hit pretty hard, but no serious flooding reported in Bangkok (yet).

The Thais don’t like the rain, when they get soaked they are susceptible to getting bad colds.  For us farangs, it’s just bloody annoying. A number of taxi drivers either refuse to take you or quote expensive prices.

The BTS Skytrain opens at 6:00 am and closes at midnight. I always find this a great transportation mode for escaping the rain and avoiding traffic jams. Bangkok is chaotic during heavy rainfall, as tons of people are trying to get into a taxi or tuk-tuk.

soi nana bangkok 3 1 - Monsoon Mayhem!

On a rainy night after the bars close in Soi Nana and Soi Cowboy, you can see rows of bar girls by the roadside waiting for taxis.  Some nights near the corner of Sukhumvit Soi 3 the row is almost as far as the eye can see.

Fortunately, if you are caught in an unexpected heavy downpour, there are plenty of available shops nearby to buy an umbrella or a raincoat.

I like how quickly and effectively, the Thai street food vendors cover their roadside stalls, with large umbrellas and ‘plastic fantastic’ housing units. Sometimes, the most simple solutions are the most practical.

bangkok floods 01 - Monsoon Mayhem!

Daves Raves – Back in the days when I visited Thailand during the 1980’s and 1990’s, I often took my holidays during the rainy season. This was due to it being offseason in my martial arts clubs. After the rainfall, you can smell the cooler, fresher air, as the rain replenishes the atmosphere. The bars and the city, in general, are much less crowded in the low season. In my book, that means less competition and more availability.

pattaya walking street - Pattaya Night Scenes Video

WELCOME TO THE NEON JUNGLE – WALKING STREET PATTAYA

Will Pattaya Become Family-Friendly?

Sometimes, we can get rather confused as to what Pattaya City is really like after nightfall. We are told by Thai media that Pattaya is becoming a family-friendly seaside resort. Well, it’s certainly not Butlin’s Holiday Camp!

Meanwhile, the Western media enjoy writing sensationalized tabloid news reports that fuel the fire by infuriating the Thai government.

Therefore, today I present recent video footage entitled, “Pattaya Night Scenes” produced by prolific videographer Bangkok 112

Here you can see the Pattaya nightlife scene and judge for yourself…

Walking Street Sneak Peek!

Saturday, July 28th, 2018

Whether you are a seasoned traveller or a newcomer to Thailand, you may well find yourself visiting Pleasure Playground, otherwise known as Pattaya.

Renowned in those vibrant, glossy travel brochures for its sun, sea and sand, Pattaya City is notoriously known for a very different ‘s’ which has been prolifically reported by numerous media sources. The sordid side of Pattaya continues to be roasted to cinders by foreign reporters. They act as though it is a new discovery.

However, despite all the pretentious window dressing by those who must be obeyed (nudge, nudge, wink, wink), this once tranquil fishing village still seeks a very different type of catch nowadays. Walking Street remains the equivalent version of Bangkok’s Patpong or London’s Soho.

Enjoy an after dark view of the Gawking, Hawking, Stalking, Walking Street!

Bangkok Bar Closures Update

Friday, October 13th, 2017

soi nana bangkok 5 - Bangkok Bar Closures Update

NANA PLAZA, SOI COWBOY & PATPONG CLOSED OCTOBER 25-27

UPDATE – A number of Bangkok bars and clubs will CLOSE tonight to respect the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol on October 13th, 2016.

The beer bars, go-go bars, pubs and clubs, are all OPEN on Saturday, October 14th and on Sunday 15th. They are also OPEN next weekend (October 20-22). With so many public holidays in Thailand, I know it can be hard to keep track of them all.

The Royal Funeral of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej will officially take place on Thursday, October 26th. Everybody is advised to wear black clothing, as this will be an extremely sad time for Thailand.

This means that all entertainment venues will (most likely) be CLOSED on October 25th, 26th and 27th. It may well be a good time to take a break from Bangkok.

Dave’s Raves – It’s not demanded that foreigners wear black clothing (October 25-27), but it will be respected by the Thai people.

Doing The Street Eat Beat!

Friday, September 8th, 2017

Do I have a food fetish? I am in a bit of a funny mood today. Is there something kind of kinky about street food in Thailand?

Now I know that is a strange question, but let me explain. A few moons ago, down on Sukhumvit Road, there is a gorgeous girl who makes delicious Fried Pork. But, sadly some guy has porked the pork girl and that’s the end of that fantasy!

The street food scene in Thailand is certainly something you would not see in the Western world. Back in Farangland, “Greasy Joe’s Fat Burger” is not what I call street food at all.

STUMBLE SOI NANA 17 08 2017 007 - Doing The Street Eat Beat!

I love the simplicity of Thai street food; it’s quick, cheap and tasty. We must remember that grilling meat is so much healthier than deep frying it to death!

Whenever you have the munchies, you can grab a few of those Barbecue Chicken Sticks at the silly cost of 10 baht each. Just wait a few minutes and you are good to go with your healthy fast food. It’s ideal when you are on the move. You can eat them right there on the street, while you travel, or save them to eat in your room. The Thais do it all the time. You know, when in Rome and all that jazz!

STUMBLE SOI NANA 17 08 2017 122 - Doing The Street Eat Beat!

As for the operators themselves, Thai street stalls are practical, cost-effective and in some cases, it’s a very profitable little business. Once they acquire a street space, for relatively little cost “Bee’s Barbecue” can be up and running in no time.

I admire how innovative the Thais can be. An old oil barrel is sliced in half and made into a barbecue stand. Have you seen those big clay pots? They are filled with charcoal and a steel grill is placed over the top. It’s a simple idea and yet so practical. The street food carts bearing anything from Som Tam (Spicy Papaya Salad) to fresh fruit bring a new meaning to “meals-on-wheels.”

Soi Nana Bangkok 03 2 - Doing The Street Eat Beat!

Your grub is cooked in no time and it’s very delicious. So many Thais prefer street food to fancy restaurants. They tell me it just does not taste the same.

Daves Raves – At times I think the Western world could learn a lot from practical, cost-effective concepts we see in Thailand. Sometimes less is more and simplicity is the key to success and satisfaction.
