Little Las Vegas

Here are two new photos I took of Soi Cowboy in downtown Bangkok.

Labelled by some as “Little Las Vegas” this tiny lane has come a long way since its humble beginnings.

During recent sojourns down Soi Cowboy, I thoroughly enjoyed visiting The Dollhouse, Shark Bar and Lighthouse. All three of these pleasure palaces are great go-go bars to drink and enjoy a bevy of beauty!

The biggest claim to fame for Soi Cowboy is being used as a location for a few famous movies. This includes the machine-gun scene inside Tilac Go-Go Bar for the crazy film Hangover 2.

Daves Raves – I met some of the stars from Hangover 2 when I was at Angelwitch Go-Go Bar and they were a really friendly bunch of guys.

One Night In Bangkok

Another short You Tube  on Bangkok Nightlife.  This time some shots of Soi Cowboy and Club Insomnia. Check out the girl rolling her tongue 180 degrees!

The main bars in Nana Plaza have been packed with standing room only at Angelwitch on Friday night.  It seems the show bars are becoming more and more popular with customers. Incidentally, this is where Soi Cowboy is losing momentum.  However, Barcarra, Shark and Tilac remain by far the most popular go-go bars on Cowboy Street. I am told Cactus Bar is a bar where the girls wear only their birthday suits. Cactus is having a revival and a couple of nights they had trouble getting seats for the Hangover Tour.

The Cambodia nightlife post has been taking a bit loner than expected, but is on its way as is an update of the photo gallery.  Stay tuned…

SOI COWBOY – LITTLE LAS VEGAS

Out of the three main go-go bar areas in Bangkok, Soi Cowboy remains the busiest overall.  This will probably become more evident, as the rainy season approaches.  The main reason is simple; the clientele in Nana Plaza and Patpong consists of an increasing number of tourists and infrequent visitors.  Therefore, the number of foreign visitors drops in the rainy season, as you well know.  In addition to a general decline in foreign visitors, Patpong has recently suffered further from the anti-government violence in Silom.  Furthermore, Patpong and Nana Plaza have more restrictions on ‘showing’ than in Soi Cowboy.  It is unfortunate for Patpong, but with Soi Cowboy being relatively unaffected by the anti-government protests, Cowboy will inevitably benefit from this situation.  Soi Cowboy has become popular with resident expats for several reasons, which includes the numerous Happy Hours on offer.  (more…)

SOI COWBOY — WELCOME TO LITTLE LAS VEGAS

Regarding the go-go bar scene in Bangkok, I think it is fair to say that a lot of the action is in Soi Cowboy these days.  Shark Go-Go Bar was packed this week and we are talking about a Tuesday night.  Shark was so busy that they opened the upstairs section.  They have got the formula right in a simple, but effective way.  Shark Bar operates to a standard format of rotating sets of go-go dancing with no shows during the night.  The go-go dancers are so sexy that it could be classed as a show in itself.

ROYAL CITY AVENUE – GET YOUR KICKS IN ROUTE 66

Royal City Avenue or ‘RCA’ is a popular little strip for Thais and foreigners alike to party the night away.  If you agree to buy a bottle of whisky, you will receive free entrance to the clubs.  If you don’t manage to finish the bottle that night, most clubs will reserve your bottle for another time.  If you are not into doing the hip-hop bop, some clubs provide live music as an alternative.  Live bands perform both Thai and Western songs. Live Music At The Penalty Spot Pub

talented singer guitarist richie walker live at the penalty spot in bangkok - Live Music At The Penalty Spot Pub

LIVE MUSIC AT THE PENALTY SPOT

Conveniently situated just a few sois away from Soi Cowboy, you will find The Penalty Spot Pub. Located on Sukhumvit Soi 29, this sporty bar has ownership connections with Tilac Go-Go Bar in Soi Cowboy. Whether you are doing a Sukhumvit stroll from Soi 33 to Soi 23 or viceversa, Sukhumvit’s latest sports pub is a suitable place for a pit stop. Pleasant enough decor is inviting, as it is rather different to the norm. After drinking in pubs for over 30 years, it is encouraging to see something a little bit different. Footy fans can ‘catch the match’ with English Premier League Football being the main live TV event.  The English Premiership football is really getting into gear, with Manchester United going top of the table. Come on you Red Devils!

bangkok nightlife january 10 2009 100 - Live Music At The Penalty Spot Pub

Apart from several TV screens showing live sports, The Penalty Spot provides good live music entertainment on a nightly basis. Multi-talented singer and guitarist Richie Walker is the live music artist on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Richie performs from 6:30pm until 9:00pm. Richie can sing a variety of songs ranging from the Bee Gees to The Beatles. Richie’s rendition of ‘Layla’ by Eric Clapton is particularly good. The alternative live music artist is Johnny ‘the one-man band’ who is something of a human jukebox. Although not in Richie’s league, Johnny has a vast repertoire of songs, all coming from a sound memory. Johnny performs on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays up until 9:00pm. A resident band play cover songs from around 9:00pm until late. Worth a visit if you are on a ‘booze cruise’ between Soi Cowboy and Soi 33. You don’t have to be a footy fan to hit The Penalty Spot!

Something else? The Soi Cowboy Reviews Page and the Nana Plaza Reviews Page have been updated this week. Cheers!

Angelwitch Showgirls Nana Plaza Loy Kratong Bangkok 2007 - Thailand Night FeverWelcome to the Thai New Year 2551 and let’s all hope it is a good year for Thailand.  Another Songkran has come and gone for most of us, but don’t forget that Pattaya will continue the water warfare until this weekend.  I have to say that I thought the Songkran Festival was a bit quiet overall this year.  If you question what I mean by that, then just ask a bar owner.  The go-go bars in Bangkok had fewer go-go dancers, due to many bar girls deciding to go home this Songkran.  Some go-go bars cut their girls as much as 2,000 Baht per day.  This is a very severe cut for not working during Songkran.  However, this can be counterproductive to the bar, because some bar girls will stop  work for the rest of April.  If a bargirl is cut 6,000 Baht that is over 50% of a go-go dancers salary.  Of course, many Thais are on much lower salaries than go-go dancers are.  Most service girls don’t earn 6,000 Baht.  Therefore, a bargirl might well think; why should I work for nothing?  I would hazard a guess that in most go-go bars in Bangkok, the takings were down on last year.  Also, I couldn’t help but notice that fewer bargirls got into the spirit of things. DAVE’S NIGHTSEEING TOURS – SUNRISE TO SOI COWBOY

SOI COWBOY BANGKOK THAILAND 07 - Thailand Night Fever

For some time now, my friend Nick has wanted to hit the town with me.  Nick is currently based in Cambodia as a mine clearance specialist.  Obviously, any day off from the minefields would be relaxing, but I wanted to introduce Nick to some places that he has not visited before.  I took a night off from my duties in Angelwitch Go-Go Bar and I looked forward to the night ahead.  I wasn’t feeling 100% but I was determined to meet Nick and spend some quality time with a good friend.  Nick was about to experience one of my “nightseeing tours” and he seemed keen enough.  We arranged to meet at Sunrise Tacos Mexican Grill, which is located in the Leader Price Complex.  (For those not familiar with the Leader Price Complex, it is right next to Time Square Building between Sukhumvit, Soi 12 and Soi 14).  Several months ago, the owners of Sunrise Tacos decided to take over a vacant space directly opposite their shop.  At first, I was not sure what Greg Lange was intending to do with two Sunrise Tacos shops.  Was Greg intending to open two branches of Sunrise Tacos in the same complex?  This all became very clear when Greg explained the concept to me.  The original Sunrise Tacos is a small place, and it now provides a 24 hour takeaway and delivery service.  The new, larger premise has become a cosy restaurant that is stylishly designed and furbished.  The credit for the interior design goes to Mrs Lange.  Greg’s wife Nui has done a superb job! THE SMOKING BAN DEBATE CONTINUES

After Dark Asia Volume 5 Thailand - Thailand Night FeverI have to say that I am a bit surprised at how much of a debate the smoking ban has become.  This seems to be a very important issue to some Westerners, while other people feel there are bigger problems to deal with.  Down in Soi Cowboy, the smoking ban has been enforced in every bar.  Smokers can be seen having a cigarette outside the bars in Soi Cowboy.  Some smokers are openly displaying their disdain for the new law.  Meanwhile, non-smokers are arguing that it is high time that smoking is banned in all bars right across Thailand.  Non-smokers are clearly saying butt out!  On the other hand, there are smokers who feel hard done by after all these years.

In Nana Plaza, the authorities have not enforced the smoking ban.  Non-smokers should be aware of this fact.  However, in Angelwitch Go-Go Bar they have banned the Thai staff from smoking inside the bar.  This is something of a compromise to the situation.  Customers are allowed to smoke in all of the four Rainbow Bars.  Therefore, rival go-go bars do not want to lose customers to them.  The smoking ban has to be a rule for all if it is going to work. SMOKING BAN IN A STATE OF CONFUSION

SOI COWBOY BANGKOK THAILAND 05 - Thailand Night FeverWith some bars allowing smoking and other bars not, it does make the smoking ban look like a farce.  There are establishments where the so-called smoking ban has not been enforced whatsoever.  Once again, go-go bars are at the centre of the controversy.  In the Lumpini area (lower Sukhumvit Road), the Hotels and restaurants have been told they must enforce the smoking ban, but some bars in Nana Plaza are currently exempt.  In stark contrast, further along Sukhumvit Road, the bars in Soi Cowboy have been told to comply to the new law.  Down in Pattaya, a number of the go-go bar owners are allowing smoking, but they have been told to be discrete.  Word from Thai sources is that the smoking ban will be enforced eventually, but currently there is a grace period.  Understand that if you can!  Thailand’s Ministry Of Health (rather than the police) will apparently be checking to see who is complying to the smoking ban.  After May 31st, 2008 all hotels and public establishments must comply to the smoking ban, or face a 20,000 Baht fine.  So far, it looks like the ban has gone up in a cloud of smoke.  Meanwhile folks, it’s just another moment in the Land Of Make-Believe.
